i was once stopped late at night, like 1 am or so, just coming off 215 on to flamingo for not having a license plate!? it was a new rental car that didn't have the plates yet, but i had the paper work that's attached to the windshield. hardly anyone was on the road at that time and i was driving safe and normal, (i was with my daughter at the time), and he came out of no where and stopped me like i just robbed a bank! it was obvious the car was brand new. i think he saw my daughter and just wanted to stop me. he started questioning my daughter asking her age. what the s^ht does that have to do with not having a license plate? she just turned 18 and he made her feel nervous like she commited a crime! he started questioning us like what were we doing in vegas. WHAT ARE WE DOING IN VEGAS!? i was thinking, get off my ass! i think he just saw a young girl in the car and wanted to flex what little he could! i was thinking of getting his name but you knew he was looking for an excuse. he must have not wiped good enough and the itch was driving him nuts!
where are the police? don't worry, they are there....usually when you don't need them.

You're lucky he didn't beat you or shoot you. Metro excels at both.
I was once walking from PHo back to Ballys at around 1am and as I passed Mon Abi Gabi, one tourist hit another tourist. They were 20-somethings, sagging pants, etc, and then the girlfriends got involved, and within 8 seconds, it was a melee of 10 people pounding on each other, then running off only to return to swat at someone again. Whole area affected was ~40 square feet, making it difficult to get past, and unpredictable, (should I rush to get past this unstable situation, or stay and watch?). Instantly, cops swooped in. Bikes first, then a couple cars, then more bikes. No one had time to call 911 from a cell, so cops were obv close by, heard the commotion and yells of spectators and stopped it before someone got stabbed.

That is so true. I was with some friends in Vegas, who happened to be VERY inebriated at the time. We were crossing the intersection between Cosmopolitan and Bellagio when one of my friends made a loud comment like "Nice A--." A policeman, followed by a video camera, came up to my friend and BERATED him, almost to a harassing degree about making the comment. My friend apologized and the policeman kept going at it, in his face like he was a drill sergeant. He again apologized, and they went on their way.
Apparently, my friend didn't see the camera and was confused as to what happened. I'm guessing they were trying to get a response from him so they could cuff him and what not... it didn't happen, so they had to move on...
I'm glad the Vegas police are looking out for the best of society.
Perhaps he thought something else was going on.Quote: inap.... i think he saw my daughter and just wanted to stop me. he started questioning my daughter asking her age. what the s^ht does that have to do with not having a license plate? she just turned 18 and he made her feel nervous like she commited a crime! he started questioning us like what were we doing in vegas...
Did she have ID? Was it photo ID? Is it a good photo?
What I'm getting at is, maybe he thought she was a hooker, and you gave her a copy of your daughter's ID to get the cop to believe that she wasn't a hooker.
As far-fetched as it may be, I can't find fault in the cop's questions.

That's what I was thinking. Rental car, 1 am, older gentleman with young girl. I think he was making sure something else wasn't going on.

Yes, they do appear like ninjas out of nowhere. I know there are a lot of them but I do not like being out on the strip during the graveyard shift. That seems to be the time when the worst stuff goes down. Just listen to the amount of sirens you hear from say 2:00 am to 6:00 am, considerably more than any other time of the day. I usually never venture out of the casino I am staying at during those hours.Quote: zippyboyPolice cars do hang out between Bills and Flamingo, MGM and the tourist shops, Casino Royale and Venetian vicinity, O'Sheas and Margaritaville, and around PHo/Paris and there are bike cops patrolling up and down everywhere. The bikecops are also all over downtown. Couple years ago that decision was made to increase bikecops due to rising gas prices as well as the belief that cops on bikes were more aware of their surroundings and in tune with pedestrian events than when they're riding in cars. Locals also had the perception that car-cops were lazier and bike-cops were healthier/friendlier.

Aww, you don't know how to have some fun. Those are the best times to be out, seeing all the crazy things that happen in Vegas. Most of the sirens I hear are ambulances which I would guess are rushing to the nearest hotel room where somebody drank to excess. But Vegas at 2am on the strip... that is worth a trip in and of itself.
Quote: milesIt is strange to me that I see very few uniformed police officers on the Las Vegas strip. In my city (Austin, Tx) when I go downtown to where all the bars and nightlife is at there are police, paddy wagons, agents for the liquor board etc everywhere. Are the police on the LV strip in plain clothes, or does casino security patrol the street too, or are there just not that many problems on the strip that require a police presence.
There's probably more shit that goes down on Austin's 6th street than the Vegas strip.

Absolutely !!! It is part of the reason I go. And I have never felt threatened in any way on the strip during the very late nite/early morning hours. I'm sure other parts of Vegas are not safe to be in at that time, just like any city, and I would stay away from those.

actually that's exactly what i thought. especially after he asked what are we doing in vegas. but he didn't ask for her ID even though she had it with her. i would have loved to push both our IDs in his face with our same last names.
the thing is, i wanted to tell him what do you think most people go to vegas for? watch the grass grow? you see old men with young women all over the strip. you know whats probably going on, but just because you see an 'odd' couple together that doesn't make it a crime, or reason to stop a car. you don't stop a couple on the strip and start questioning them just because the man is older and the woman is younger. he probably just wanted to get a closer look at my daughter. and that thought p^ssed me off. otherwise i woudn't have mind it as much.
.
That's a good probability.Quote: inaphe probably just wanted to get a closer look at my daughter.
Wow. In that case, you have a good argument for harassment.Quote: inapbut he didn't ask for her ID even though she had it with her.
