I thought it was 20% briefly at one time?Quote: WizardNobody ever tells me anything. I did a little research and found this promotion where the Ellis Island gives 110% of your change in free play. I have a 5-gallon water jug half full of change. I should take advantage of it.
How is it possible to have kids and change around the house? Are they holding out for bills?Quote: WizardThanks for the information. Do you know if there is a limit at the El Cortez? What does the Ellis Island do if you're over $400?
I'm mainly interested in getting rid of my change. I think I have about $1,000 worth.

They could steal all the bills they want. I tend to trust people until they prove not worthy of it and so far that hasn't happened with them.
I was not suggesting they would steal the change. I just assumed all kids extracted all the extra change from their parents like I did.Quote: WizardThey could steal all the bills they want. I tend to trust people until they prove not worthy of it and so far that hasn't happened with them.

This could be the first new "Challenge" for the WOV monthly contest.*

Guess the amount of $$ in the Wiz's 5 gallon loose change jug.
Picture of the jug could be taken and shown on the site for guessing. I volunteer to video/take picture @ Ellis Island (or wherever) if needed or allowed...
Sounds like a very good idea. A little bit of skill involved, lots of luck, everyone can participate, it came up naturally from a WOV conversation and it seems fun.Quote: KeeneoneQuote: WizardNobody ever tells me anything. IIRC there was a limit, I think $400. So you have to run $440 coin in at a 1% loss, so overall your profit is $35 for $440 coin in. It's not too shabby, but, it's quite a hassle especially if you don't already have a bunch of quarters....also how far away you live from there.
I think when I did it the machine counted an extra quarter. Not sure if a roll from the bank had an extra quarter, there was already 25c in it, or maybe we put an extra quarter in (we dropped some on the ground and scooped 'em up and put them in, so maybe there was an extra on the ground). My brother thought it was amazing a casino would offer such a promotion.
You could add even more profit by going on 2 for 1 pizza day.
You had to pay? Sucker....Quote: RigondeauxQuote: RSQuote: WizardNobody ever tells me anything. I did a little research and found this promotion where the Ellis Island gives 110% of your change in free play. I have a 5-gallon water jug half full of change. I should take advantage of it.

Quote: billryanI twice was shortchanged by these machines in my bank. First time was a few dollars, second was over $10 on $250 worth of coins. Bank must have been aware because they offered me a $10 credit with almost no arguing.
So not counters but confiscators.
It's legal tender, for crying out loud. 8% or whatever is highway robbery. Blows my mind.
Otoh, great promo from Ellis Island. Full value+10 % premium for something that (now) is depreciated routinely, if banks take them at all? And all those tasty, tantalizing 85% slots right there next to your fistful of cash? I bet they made money on that one. Despite RS's nibble on the side.
Quote: beachbumbabsAs a former bank teller, I have continued to be astonished that coinstar and the like can run a profitable business with a surcharge on coin-to-cash.
Maybe it is because the banks won't count loose change, no matter how valuable the customer. In my experience they demand it be rolled with the account holder's name, address, and account number on each roll.
Quote: WizardAll right. I challenge y'all to beat this.
I can do 41 consistently. (Well if starting with 50 and ending with 41 twice is consistent). 50 fit in my hand but everything has to go right. The hardest part is balancing the coins on your elbow.

I agree. And many side bets could be made:
How much does the jug weigh?
How many quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies are there?
How many foreign coins (for example: Canadian coins) are in the jug?
What other foreign objects are in the jug (paper clip, rubber band, casino coin, car wash token etc.)?
How long can the Wizard ride his unicycle while holding the jug of coins?
And the list could go on...

Wells Fargo wanted to charge me 3% on small currency over $1500 per month on my small business account.

Quote: SiegfriedRoyI've seen saltine cracker challenges for speed. This can get quite interesting when there are money and prizes involved. It's A LOT harder than it sounds. Each contestant must put some money into it, and winner take all. Observers can do side bets with one another to see who they think will win.
the crackers are tough! looks easy but it's realy hard!
Quote: DRichI use Wells Fargo and they take loose change for deposit Into your account. They bag the coin and send it to a central location that counts it and it shows up in your account 1 to 2 days later.
And charge you pretty dearly, no?
Quote: billryanAnd charge you pretty dearly, no?
Wells Fargo doesn't charge me anything to cash in loose coin. The only downside is it takes a day or two before they credit it to your account.

What kind of account do you have? I have a basic business checking and they charge me 3% for currency Indocin over $1500 a month.
I never pay it as my business is currently 100% internet based so no currency goes in over the counter.
