No matter 114 is freaking hot! personally I am ok up til about 107 then it starts to feel hot. 110 is my personal threshold. 3 or 4 days at or above 110 and I start to get cranky. As I stated in another thread, the big issue with 110+ temps is that it only 'cools' down to about 90 at night, sometimes not even. So as soon as the sun comes up, the temp starts cranking towards 100, which it hits by 9am. No break what-so-ever.
Mt. Charleston?
Casino Pool with a few playful babes?
Air Conditioned Casino Lounge?
Air Conditioned Hotel Room with a few playful babes?
Lower the thermostat at home and drink a six pack until reaching oblivion?
Do you head to the Bingo rooms because the odds change as the heat forces others to stay away?
Does the heat gradually wear you down? It never bothered me, but
my trips to Vegas only last 3-5 days each. About 108 is the hottest
Vegas temp I've personally experienced.
Added- No cabs for me; I walk or ride the bus.

As I said, I am generally ok, up until multiple days of 110 or more (today is day 4 of 110 or more...lol). That is the point that it does start to bother me. And with temps still about 100 at 11pm at night and back up to 100 by 9am, I hear that AC running non-stop...that bothers me some...lol. Last summer there was really only one stretch of 4 or 5, 110 days in a row, late in august, the week before Labor day. I get the feeling this year is going to be much worse.
Quote: kewljI hear that AC running non-stop...that bothers me some...lol.
Here in Ohio, last week we had several days 100+ (Saturday was 105).
Easily the hottest ever for me.
My AC ran non-stop, bothers me too, but not enough to shut it off.
I expect the next electric bill to be around $250-$300.
Quote: Gabes22People exaggerate the extremes whereever they go. Here in Chicago they tell out of towners about the constant below 0 temperatures in winter. There are maybe 1-2 days a year if that where it doesn't get above 0, quite frankly I don't think Chicago has much of a winter.
A few months ago, while in Vegas, I met a young couple from Chicago.
They asked me if I ever went into any of the Minus 5 Ice Bars in Vegas.
They were thinking about going. I told them to wait until next January,
then they can sit outside and pound beers in Chicago. Much cheaper.

Those 1 or 2 days would be 1 or 2 too many for me! I was born just north of Chicago and think the people there are really nice, but I like it nice and warm. Winters here tend to bottom out at highs in the 30's, with occasional colder spells. Rarely below freezing for a high.
Desert heat doesn't bother me as much as the rapid cooling after sundown. I can handle a week at Disney World in Florida in the summer better than most in my family, though. I like my humidity!
I never liked it, but I'm just too old for that slap in the face
of coming out of an ice cold casino into a smelting forge crap.
It hard on you no matter what you think. Like those imbeciles
who walk around in Jan in the Midwest with a tee shirt on
outdoors. They don't know it, but their body is going into panic
mode, making all kinds of decisions, doing all kinds of negative
things. In Vegas, you can feel those negative things happening
in real time. No thanks.
Been living in the desert for about 16 years. I'll take it over cold and wet any day. It only lasts a couple months. That's what swimming pools are for.
Staying hydrated is key.
Saw 113 today at or near Charleston and Buffalo. (Starting to see more graffiti down there.)
the flip side was a year or so ago when it snowed on the strip! we were there for new years. watching snow fall while in my hotel room at ballys was a strange experience. ice was forming at outdoor water features.
.
Vegas, should break records. Better them than me.
Only 112-113 the rest of the time. Walk it off..
I once was in LV I believe it was 1997 when the humidity was sky high, not midwest high, but really high for LV. Even the locals couldnt take it, it was the worse weather I have been in. I hate the humidity.
Quote: JW17I hate the humidity.
Everybody hates humidity, you can't breathe. Thats
why they sent people with TB to AZ 100 years ago,
they lived a lot longer when their lungs weren't all
soggy with humidity.
Quote: JW17I too enjoy the heat over the cold, I live in Scottsdale AZ, (Phoenix) and the weather is very similar.

3 years in Phoenix, first week was around 110/days, thought I needed to get my head examined for moving there. After a year I could take 100 easy but 110 was uncomfortable. 100 at night got to be pleasant. Went on a trip, came back via Palm Springs where it was over 115! Getting out of the car to pump gas I thought I would melt.

Remember, that's "only 112-113" in the shade. It's quite a bit hotter when you're "walking it off" along the Strip in direct sunlight (of course, if you're along the Strip, you should be going through as many casinos as possible, but still, there's that stretch between PH and MGM Grand).
casino where you almost need a jacket, to 115
in the shade. Its has to effect you in a negative
way. I won't go to Vegas June-Sept anymore,
I learned my lesson. I went in May, it was marvelous
weather.

I was being facetious. Don't walk in the heat,
especially if you've been drinking alcohol.
Edit: to EvenBob's point, there's a Steve Angello show at XS tomorrow night. I wouldn't be surprised if some visitors can't handle the combination of heat, booze, and dancing until 4am.

I would snap switch St. Louis's summers/winters for Chicago's. Chicago's winter is barely worse (but less ice on roads), and their summer is a lot nicer.
Quote: MathExtremistI was living in Las Vegas in 2005 during the last (and only) 115+ heat wave. Just my luck I'm in town for this one. The local news anchor just said it was 109 today and we could see 115+ for the next 4 days.
Ouch. I hit Vegas about 10 days before this thread first started. I was happy to be there because it was both 105 in Vegas and St. Louis at the time. :-\ 105 is pushing it, but 100 is pretty damn good in Vegas though.
Quote: egalitedamn and I thought Adelaide got unbearably hot at 42 degrees.
Johno; We be doing Fahrenheit on this side of the pond!

To me that 105 degree mark that you mentioned is key. Anything below that is tolerable and getting above that becomes a problem. 109, 110 doesn't seem like much difference from 104, 105, but it really is huge. The big factor for me, isn't really even the daytime high but rather the nighttime low. I am on a schedule where I get up early and am most productive in the am hours. I eat my big meal of the day, everyday, (courtesy of the casino industry) in the early afternoon, usually 2pm-ish, but during the summer even a bit earlier and then head home and like to take a nap in the afternoon during the hottest part of the day. My roommates, always tease me about being on the retired persons schedule.
So here is the difference in those few degrees. Nighttime lows are usually 20-25 degree cooler than daytime highs during the summer here in Vegas. So a day with a high of 104 will have a nightime low of 80, 82. So by 8 am the temp begins to climb, 85, by 10 am it's working it's way into the 90's and by noon, high 90's. By 1pm the temp has hit 100 going towards 104, 105 at 3-4 pm. So if you get out in the morning, you can still do things...errands, grocery shopping, casino play, even outdoor activities like walking bike riding if you are inclined to.
But when daytime high is up at 110 or higher, that few degrees makes a huge difference in the nighttime low, which will only go down to 90, maybe high 80's. So now the temperature climb is greatly exaggerated. By 8 am it is pushing towards 95, by 10am...ALREADY 100. And by noon 105+. It is like you lose 3-4 hours of reasonable temperatures. :(
Now unfortunately, this weekend with 4 straight days of 115 predicted and 2 of those days challenging the all-time high of 117, I will be moving into my new home. :( Settlement date was picked quite a while ago, so that's just bad fortune. And while it's true, I have a moving company and all, there is still a lot of work involved in moving. Couldn't come at a worse time. But I am looking forward to hitting that swimming pool. :)
Quote: DeMangoJohno; We be doing Fahrenheit on this side of the pond!
42C = 107.6F I'm a math/science dork, can't help it. Also, I dunno the humidity in Adelaide, but if it's anything like St. Louis, then it would be approaching 115F levels in Vegas. I'm one of the few in the US that thinks we should move to the metric system. But usually, I still intuitively think of measurements in the English system and then do the conversion. Yikes!
May the US of A soon catch up with the rest of the world and start selling "petrol" by the litre.Quote: DeMangoJohno; We be doing Fahrenheit on this side of the pond!
Sadly though, I remember less than $0.90/gallon a little over 15 years ago. I began to drive in one of the US's cheapest eras of gasoline.
Quote: tringlomane42C = 107.6F ... I still intuitively think of measurements in the English system and then do the conversion. Yikes!
I keep doing the quicky, "double it and add 30", to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. Doubling approximates dividing by 5 and then multiplying by 9. Obviously if C. is divisible by 5 it is boneheaded to approximate it, though. 32 instead of 30 for accuracy at that point.
Nonetheless, the quicky formula works well until you get past comfortable temps, certainly at high temps it loses accuracy.
Woohoo Turf Paradise! Surprised those horses don't collapse.Quote: JW17ahhh, its going to be another 120* or so here in Scottsdale today. Nothing like sitting outside, smoking cigars, drinking beer and playing the ponies in the heat.
(Wait a minute, they're not open now. You doing OTB?)
Quote: EvenBobSo it hit 117 in Vegas today, any stories? It was 78 here, very nice.
Well, I had settlement and am in the process of moving yesterday and today. It is hot!! I hate that I was unlucky enough to have hit this weather on my moving weekend. Someone up there must not like me. I did get the pool guy out yesterday so, once the movers leave, I may just flop in the pool to cool off before retreating indoors.
The worse part is the nighttime lows. Last night was only supposed to cool off to 91. That means as soon as the sun comes up the temperature is off and running, hitting 100 by 9am. You get no break whatsoever.
The next 3 days are all forecast for 117 which is the hottest temperature ever recorded in Vegas. Tuesday is going to 'cool down' to a high of only 115.
All I can say is thank god it's 2013 and not 1913! :)
And you want to try paying $8 US per gallon of petrol, oops I mean gas...
but then again I only go out at night and from car to casino. AC is a modern miracle.
I remember my first transition from a heat wave there into a dark casino: instant blindness. I couldn't even see the lovely girl offering me a free drink. I learned on my first trip to stay inside a casino as much as possible and not venture out into the real world to get a hotel room or anything. It also taught me the value of all those "free" items. Yeah, Pal: you go walk four blocks in this heat for a free rabbit's foot key chain. Taught me the value of those free gambling lessons too. The Gambling University was located on the second floor but it was still airconditioned there. Sure one of the dealers took my diploma and held it behind him briefly to illustrate a use to which it could be put, but then I soon realized that even that use would be inside an air conditioned building.
NOTE: As it gets to extreme levels and even the natives note the disruptions, who benefits in the Bingo rooms and Poker rooms?
Scores treated at Silverton's Van's Warped Bands Tour which seems to be an event taking place in the parking area at thirty dollar admission. 34 were transported to the hospital from the Silverton for heat related problems.
and was 117 at 6pm.

Lol yes OTB. I never go to turf paradise. What a dump and way too degenerate for me. Well the OTB did have the misters on so that helped a lot.
Like walking from a fridge into a pizza oven, thats how
your body reacts to it. Some firemen were taking a break
a few years ago downtown and one of them told me its
BS that you get used to excessive heat. He said you never do,
its always extremely hard on your body to cope with
it.
And it's damn near July! We need to... I dunno, combine our forces or something.
