I've heard that if you tip $20 during check-in with your ID and ask for a complimentary upgrade, or something like that, it's an easy way to get bumped. I'm wondering what, if any, experience people have had with this.

I'll be checking in around midnight on a Wednesday night, leaving Friday night so I wouldn't affect their weekend schedule and they would already know the room situation.

Yes I have googled it, and read on other sites. It's easy to get a real person with a lot of experience to respond quickly here on these boards, so that's why I'm here.

In October 2009 I used the $20 trick, I am not sure if I got upgraded but the room was very nice and they put me on the "champagne" list- it was a free bottle of sparkling, but I felt the $5 tip I gave was more than the bottle cost since it had a screw top! With this trick you have to be willing to let it go without the possibility of an upgrade, currently most places are likely to sell you an upgrade. If anything you can feel good you gave a tip to the clerk that probably gets paid very little $ and gets tipped once in a blue moon.

I pulled this off at the Bellagio a couple of weeks ago. Booked a cheap room at Casino rate. Back side of the hotel with no view. Tipped the guy at the front desk and got a sweet bellagio fountain view dead center on the 24th floor. Definately worth the $20.

I realized I made the post I intended for here in the other $20 tip thread since I clicked the link in that thread and forgot where I was :). Anyway, here it is...

Tried it a handful of times... and "worked" every time.

A couple years ago at Mandalay Bay the front desk person said they were trying to upgrade me to a penthouse room (which I figured was BS in the first place), but the Mosley/Collazo fight was there that weekend and he was informed they had all the top floor rooms booked. Whatever. I was told I was upgraded to one of their new rooms which was recently remodeled. Super nice room, but I dunno if it was really an upgrade, as I assume all their rooms are like that now.

I used it again at the Venetian. Already had a large suite so the person at the front desk said they couldn't get me a bigger room, but they gave me a room with a view, something like $50 to spend in the casino and free passes to something, but I don't remember what off the top of my head.

Last year I tried it at Bally's with my wife and was upgraded to a larger room and given free show tickets. The room was definitely bigger, but it was much older than the standard rooms I've stayed in there before. Looked like it was from the 70s.

Also tried it last year at THEhotel at Mandalay Bay and was upgraded to a room on a higher floor with a sweet view of the strip.

I know people who have tipped at Treasure Island before the new management and have gotten higher rooms and champagne.

I plan on trying it in a few months at The Palms. We'll see what happens.

I dunno if this is true or not, but it may work a lot better if you originally booked your room through the casino itself. Booking on sites like Vegas.com or Expedia seem to lower your chances of getting a real upgrade.
