if I'm playing on a craps game with a 5000 max line bet, 5x's odds, how much should I be allowed to "overlay" paying the 5% vig, against the 4+10 for example. 5000 pass line takes 25,000 to win 50.0, so with 5000 flat "don't", I can "lay" 50.0 k to win 25.0. What should I be able to "overlay"?

OK, so you're talking about playing the DP for ABSOLUTE MAX.
Now, once you've got to that extreme...I'd be willing to bet, the boxman/floor supervisor/CSM, won't let you go any higher...
Otherwise, on an educated guess, I'd say you could ALSO "Lay" the point for the table max line bet amount ($10k for the 4/10, $7500 for the 5/9, $6000 for the 6/8)
Warren Buffett...is that you?

I think that at most places, if the max is $5000, you would be able to lay $10k to win $5k against the 4 or 10.

Also, if you are at a decent-sized casino, you can probably just ask for the max to be raised and they will accommodate you. Those maximums are generally "soft"; I've seen big players request and receive higher limits. A smaller place might not be able to handle the action though.

Thanks for the help. I agreed with you.

I've always viewed the max as the amount the casino is willing to risk of their own money on one throw. In any case, the max inherently must be a soft number. Since most casinos are trying to get people to increase their bets, the max is just to protect them against wild variation. A casino has to have limited cash on hand, and they simply can't handle someone they don't know who could walk in and put down $100K and potentially walk out after one play.
