Has Wordle ever had a two pair word before?
I've been trying random 1st words based on the previous day's answer and assuming the editor has certain tendencies that bias his word choice. Today it worked out. Other days, not so much. It would be interesting to investigate these biases with some statistical testing and use those to find a daily optimal first word, then offer prop bets on certain vowels and consonants being in the word.
🟨⬜⬜⬜🟨 LOTUS// Today I was thinking no "E", hence my first word used common letters while avoiding "E".
⬜🟩⬜⬜⬜ PARED // I thought "SLEEP" might be the answer so I wanted a "P" word.
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 SALSA // The Super Bowl theme continues.

You're correct. XYLYL will never be the answer to a NY Times puzzle, since that word is not in the list of 2,315 valid possible answers. (Although the contents of the exact list is now unknown. It's been edited and is no longer available to view. It's possible XYLYL may have been added to the list... but I highly doubt it. So yea, XYLYL remains a valid guess only.)Quote: avianrandy...For some reason,I have remember that.according to a Google search, the actual worst starting word is xylyl. I could never imagine that being the wordle, but fuzzy possibly.
FUZZY is indeed not only a valid guess but a valid possible answer... one that we have yet to see... so it could turn up at any time.
And yes, depending upon the exact metric used, XYLYL may indeed be the absolute word guess possible. However, there are six valid Wordle answers that, when the feedback clues given from the guess XYLYL are revealed, the puzzle will be able to be solved on Row 2... as there is only one valid word remaining!
Five of those words are LOWLY, POLYP, ROYAL, SATYR, and SLYLY.
For example, if XYLYL is your staring guess on Row 1 and SLYLY is the answer, the feedback clues will be xYYYY. (Four yellows in positions 2 through 5.) At that point, SLYLY is the only valid word remaining, and so despite your "terrible guess" you've solved the puzzle on Row 2.
I've listed five of them. Bonus points if you are able to figure out and correctly the guess the sixth valid Wordle answer that an be deduced when XYLYL is a guess. (It's a common word that everyone is familiar with.)
If it helps you, note that it's not HIS word choice... it's HER word choice.Quote: teliot,,, I've been trying random 1st words based on the previous day's answer and assuming the editor has certain tendencies that bias his word choice.
The new NY Times Wordle editor is Tracy Bennett.

After XYLYL is played, given a clue pattern of xGxYx, the word PYGMY would also still be possible.

Where is "WHIZZ" among worst first-word choices?Quote: EdCollinsGYPSY is a pretty darn good guess... but incorrect.

I don't see that word listed on any of the various website and discussion boards that talk about the worst starting Wordle words. I suspect it's not quite as bad as any of these:Quote: teliotWhere is "WHIZZ" among worst first-word choices?
QAJAQ
JUJUS
JAZZY
IMMIX
JEEZE
YUKKY
PZAZZ
JAFFA
XYLYL
SUSUS
Next up is QAJAQ with an average of 925.11 words remaining.
Again, note that Average number of Words Remaining is not the only metric that should be used. For example, all of the top bots on the Wordlebot leaderboard use SALET as their opening starter... and yet as shown, SLATE and CRANE and SOARE all leave on average less words remaining than SALET.
(The average number of words remaining in the table above are all based upon the original 2,315 word data set.)
