Thanks for the plug! I definitely wouldn't do matey, except if I make a pirate version, as I consider it slang English. Fishy I don't care for, as I don't like turning one form of word into another, like a noun into an adjective, although fishy is not usually used to describe things that are like fish. However, I wouldn't totally rule it out.

I'm thinking of making another dropdown menu for the year and creating a new list for 2023 words. Any volunteers to cull such a word list?

How about a crossword/wordie hybrid?

Have an empty crossword, but none of the usual clues. Guess each of the crossword words in the same manner as wordie. (only it wouldn't be limited to 5 letters)
Of course each correct word would be identified once you got the letters right and that word would be a clue to letters in other parts of the crossword. So it would get a bit easier as you move along.

Give the player a countdown meter. Like 1000 points. Each incorrect guess subtracts a point. So object is to stay as close to high score at finish.

If you want to add an extra dimension, make a crossword all related to one word. Like if the theme is "Gambling", each word in the puzzle would be related to some gambling. This would give you two ways to win. If you guess "gambling" before finishing the puzzle you win and gain more points. If you don't guess before then, then you get whatever score you get by finishing. (at the top of the page would be spaces for the instant "win" word. "gambling in this case) To make the win word harder to guess don't give a specific number of letters, just open ended for short or long words.

On this site, I'd expect nearly everyone to guess gambling as a theme pretty soon, unless you really incorporated obscure terms.

I'm available again... but if anyone else would like to do it, I'm more than happy to let them have a go at it.

If I did it I'd use the same method as before... simply start from the entire dataset of words and then have Excel randomly pick 365 of them.

If desired, I'd then cross check it against prior lists so there are no duplicate words in the 2023 list. However, I think leaving in the few duplicates that might appear would actually be better. This way you wouldn't know for sure that a word wouldn't turn up again in 2023, if you saw it in 2022.

Having no other volunteers, I'm happy to accept your offer! Feel free to weed out words that are obscure. You know I like words that are used in everyday speech. I would prefer to not have duplicates from the first list. I will probably require at least 400, as I'm sure I'll veto some of them.
