par is a golf term meaning average. Average number of shots to sink the ball in the hole. Birdie is one under par; Bogey is one over par

Wow. Of course I know what "par" means with respect to Golf and its general meaning. What I don't know is how one could assign a "Par" value to Wordle if there is an optimal strategy. For example, what is the "Par" value for Blackjack or Video Poker? Likewise here, "Par" has no meaning outside of optimal strategy. To say "Par = 4" is just meaningless for Wordle.
That said, "Par" for Wordle is even more complicated. Each word has a path to it that is well defined in optimal strategy, so one could take that pathlength to be the "Par" for that word. You will notice that some days, like today, we get average scores much lower than other days. Other days are considerably tougher. So, like Golf and par being dependent on the hole, "Par" in Wordle depends on the word and should not be defined in any overall context.
And to add to this lack of definition of "Par" even more, because the words are chosen by a human and not random, there can be some amount of guessing that can improve scores even more. Hence my guess of "FEAST" yesterday and score of 2/6.

It depends. As a solved game you can look up the right answer for each green position for your starting word. Given that it looks like “itchy” is the only possible answer with a single green in the second position on “stare” the right answer is to go for it.
The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; but that is the way to bet.

I understand what you are saying teliot.i just meant the average score overall would be around 4. Earlier this year in May 4 known as Star wars day I used force as my starting word hoping for a hole in one. Wasn't even close . You just never know.on earth day this year the word was plant.bow I just use the same starting word and go from there good luck. It's just a fun little game I enjoy

As for probing words, my strategy has evolved: when I first started playing Wordle, I almost always played STARE, DOING, and MULCH on turns 1, 2, and 3, then tried to solve from there. Lately, I have mostly been eschewing probing words, instead trying for the hole on each shot. I have not activated "Hard" mode, but most of the time lately I've been obeying its strictures.
On today's puzzle, after STARE gave BGBBB, I thought for perhaps 10 minutes before I found ITCHY. This lengthy thought process made me curious to check your list, and when I did, ITCHY was the only word, as confirmed by unJon in his reply to your original post.
