I spent less than two minutes solving this one. After turn 1, the A had to be the first or fourth letter. Since I couldn't think of any answer of the form __RAE, I knew the answer would fit A_R_E. A few moments of reflection lead to AGREE.
Lifetime I now have 14 more birdies than pars.
Eagle #140 for this old dog.

I'm not quite sure what a shoofly pie is - I'm only really familiar with it through a song - but a chess pie is pretty much just a "custard" pie made from just butter, sugar, eggs, and milk. Supposedly, the name comes from when someone asks what kind of pie it is - "Nothing special; just pie," which sounds like they said "chess pie." It has nothing to do with the game.
