I just found that that a new water park is planned to open here in the spring of 2013: Splash Canyon. Let me say, it is about time! Ever since the one closed next to the Sahara several years ago I've been saying it is ridiculous that a city of almost two million in the desert has no water park. By comparison, Anchorage Alaska does (link)!

This will also be a convenient location to me, a straight shot south on the 215. I imagine tourists on the Strip will gripe about having to travel so far to get to it. Based on the location, it seems to me they are more going after the locals.

Still, I'm not going to get my hopes too high. Projects in Vegas get announced and never finished all the time. I see from the web site that this park was supposed to open this year. Does anyone know if ground has broken yet? I'm still surprised I never heard about this before.

Sweet!
I remember going to the water park when I went in 97...
I was just talking to Krista about this yesterday...they should have a waterpark attached to a casino...easy money! Leave the kids at the park all day and parents can go gamble!
MGM used to have something like that (theme park on the back) and CC is still the only place that actually has something for the kids to do...

Isn't Vegas still in the middle of a prolonged drought? Something tells me the number of locals who would take advantage of a water park might be offset by the ones who think it's a waste of the water.

That seems fair...however, when I look around at the landscaping, I don't think too many people worry about wasting water. I can only imagine how many gallons are used everyday keeping the "lush landscaping" where I live.

There is a second water park near Boulder Hwy in the north part of Henderson planned.

The one in the SW is being built by Howard Hughes Corp (Summerlin's main developer) so I would think there would be plenty of money. I did not think there was enough time to finish it to open on time this year so they did not try.

Wasn't that the idea behind Wet & Wild being right next to the Sahara?

I think having it off-strip is the way to go for Las Vegas. I mean, the tourists have access to some really nice pools to cool off in the resorts they are staying at.

I doubt one local will not go because of a perceived water shortage. There is plenty of water coming down the Colorado River for 100 water parks in Vegas. The problem is that farmers in the Salton Sea area get it at a heavily subsidized price. Cut off that subsidy, charge a fair and equal price to everybody, and there will be no more talk of a water shortage.

Thanks. I didn't know about that one either. That is good, as the one on the west side looked too small. Two seems like a good number.

Wet n Wild was just too ahead of its time. It was a waterpark in a time where waterparks were really coming into their own. They had some high technology rides at the time, but now the technology has jumped by leaps and bounds. Further, they had no room to expand with new and better rides, so they fell behind. It was in a bad location and new hotels were big about putting in splashy water slides with near free access for hotel guests.

A waterpark is significantly cheaper than an amusement park these days, and it provides a good getaway for those who like them. I think it will do well in Vegas now.
