www.annualcreditreport.com is the government mandated site where you can get your free credit report each year from the three major credit reporting bureaus, no strings attached. In contrast, www.freecreditreport.com is a privately owned by Experian that “kinda” gives you your free credit report ... freecreditreport.com [offers] the free report in exchange for signing consumers up for a credit monitoring service

emphasis mine

Slowly answering MDawg's question as to why I have not checked with Experian specifically when I have been checking my credit report - though I don't remember much about what I was thinking, evidently I opted not to use freedcreditreport.com for the reason above, after looking into it. I'm not sure why now, but I wind up with an Equifax report.

You're entitled to one free copy of your credit report every 12 months from each of the three nationwide credit reporting companies

the way I read this, you can get 3 separate reports from each once a year free, in other words you don't have to wait another year if you got one from Equifax, which I did in May, in order to get a free one from Experian, which if I can I will do soon, stay tuned.

Ordering one from a different company every four months will give you year round coverage.

that is correct. Each one is a separate company and you are entitled to get it for free 1 time a year.

Here is another way to get your info for free.

Go to any of the 3 sites.
Go to online dispute
It will give you a full list of what is on your report so that you can initiate a dispute.
