China's Ye Shiwen holds her gold medal after winning the 400m individual medley in world record time.
We all want to worship triumph, but Ye Shiwen (only age 16) seems to have done the impossible. She knocked more than a second off the time that won Steph Rice gold back in Beijing in 2008 and set a new world record.
After 300m of fly, back and breaststroke, Ye was eight-tenths of a second behind USA's world champion, Elizabeth Beisel. And then, with 100m to go, something extraordinary happened: Ye was faster in the final 50m of her own 400m Individual Medley than Lochte (age 27) was in his.
We all remember the story in the 1968 Summer Olympics when Bob Beamon broke the long jump record by 21¾" in his final jump after his previous attempts were disqualified. He held the world record for 21 years.
Can this 16 year old girl be stronger for just 100 yards than a male gold medal winner a decade older than she by natural means?
