EVG Free or Norton 360. I have a buddy who thinks I just have to have N360 (buy at Staples on sale frequently for $40). He's way more knowledgeable than me, but way less than some of you guys. If you have a well informed opinion please give it. I was told by a tech guy at Staples that the Norton was good, but to disable the registry portion. However, Staples has recently started promoting an in store tune up for $10, and they know how to properly keep the registry clean.

You've blocked me, but it's called AVG Free and unless you're surfing for porn or downloading tons of software and sharewhare from unreliable sites, you should be good. Once you get into Norton or McAfee, you are always paying for upgrades which can get costly. AVG is adequate and doesn't have take a great deal of system overhead and doesn't flash you or bother you to purchase the full version.

I used to use nothing but AVG, I've used both the free and paid versions. Now all I use is the free Microsoft Security Essentials.

My advice is to take a look at the following website, they run lots of tets and comparatives: http://www.av-comparatives.org/en/comparativesreviews
It will certainly help you making a good decision!

I dont have any anti-virus software, and i know some of you may be shocked, but I'll tell you why.

1) firstly most anti-virus will cause lag, and generally slow your computer down a lot.
2) I get all my porn surfing from a site who is virus free and has been since 1995.
3) I dont download cracks, illegal software or things from lawyers in nigeria, despite the fact I have won the lottery.

Total number of viruses? ZERO.
I have never had one, ever. I think its like taking insurance in blackjack.

Just my two cents.

So, F-secure is the winner. I go to their site, and I think it's free but it says you have to have a valid subscription key, which I don't, but I continue to the download of the f-security internet security 2012, and I wade thru the licensing agreement and can't find anything that says I agree to pay something, should I accept the lic. agreement?

I noticed first that Norton 360 is not even rated. Does that mean they were unwilling to "buy" an entry into the contest?

Can you discretely get me a link for 2)? How can you be sure it's virus free, and viruses are not the only thing to be concerned about, are they?

The ones that I use are:

Malwarebytes
Comodo
SuperAntiSpyWare

I only use it when I have a problem. I occasionally get something like a google redirect. The last time, SuperAntiSpyWare didn't get it, but Comodo did.

I install them, let them do a full scan, then I un-install the program. If you leave it on, it causes everything to run horribly slow.

I've never gotten a virus that I haven't gotten rid of with one of these three, and they are all free, although they try to sell you upgraded versions.
I heart Crystal Math.

You've taught me some things I never considered. If you only worry about an existing virus, how about email scan, adware, spyware, all the crap that wants to slip on your computer?

These work for adware and spyware. I don't know about email, but these programs don't do that. I just delete questionable emails and I don't open files or follow links in email unless I know what it is.

My sole contribution to the thread is this. Are you aware of logmein.com or joinme.com? Both with free basic usage. The first assists you in using one computer from a remote second computer. If you're on the road, then you can leave your home computer on and prepared to allow you access from a remote computer. The second allows one computer to share another's computer-screen, mouse control, keyboard control. I want to try it out. My computer will be the guinea pig, I'll give you complete control. All my porn sites are on a different computer, but the one I will risk is going to be returned for a refund anyway. Anyone want to try it? LMK.
My email is knbefmf@hot.rr.com. You need to back up one letter in the alphabet for the correct first 7 letters. So, Frank, can anyone out-spider that?
