One of my wife's friends is getting a divorce and she has asked if she could stay with us for a few months (or longer) while she gets her life settled. The young lady will be paying us $400 per month to rent a section of our house.

To be honest, we don't really need the money, but my wife's friend feels better about paying us something rather than staying for free. However, it does bring about the question about what we are going to do with the extra $400 per month. It isn't a life changing amount, but it could be fun to go to one or two nice dinners per month, have a couple of date nights with my wife, host a party at our house, or something.

What would you do if you had an extra $400 per month?

I'd probably lose an extra $400/month gambling...

I'd put half away to cover the increased expenses, (water, electricity, phone, gas, food), give a quarter of it to my wife to use as she sees fit, and save the rest to one day surprise my wife with a nice cruise like DJTeddybear's family.

Do you have to spend it?

I'd save it for my next gambling trip, since mine are very few and far between I'd probably have a pretty decent bankroll.

If it's like you describe, where the $400 is only for a few months or so, I wouldn't do a thing different, that $400 would vanish like a fart in the wind.

Now if I had a barn out back that I was getting $400 a month rent out of or something, I would get another car, probably an older muscle car, convertible, since the A/C will probably suck in it. A 1970-72 Baracuda sounds about right.

Put down whatever I need to make the payment $400.

I'd put it in savings and then give/loan it back to the friend to help them with a down payment on a place of their own a few months down the road.

Neither have I. I just paid them to go away afterwards.

What does this mean? If you lose $400, how is that
'entertaining'? Have you really been drinking the
casino Koolaid for so long that you think losing is
'fun'?

Send it to me... and I'll let you know what I do with it.

Actually, its good that she is paying rent as any legal dissolution of the marriage will also involve some property settlement and spousal support issues, its good for her to have "expenses".

I'd save up a few months worth then take a long golf weekend somewhere, or find a cheap flight to FL and rent a fishing charter for a day or two.

However, what would really happen is that we'd use $100/month on a dinner, put $100/month in each of the kids college funds, and put the last $100 into our retirement funds. Boring, but financially sound.
