Quote: WizardShould I ask to remove the chips, and have shapes approximating the size of each property?
that would be my vote. Obviously you have already considered just adding a key to the old map.
Quote: WizardShould I change "The Strip!" to "Las Vegas Blvd."?
Both!
Quote: WizardDo you prefer the big or the small map?
Keep both and actually, if you have paid for it already, include that old map too.
Does the color of the chips need a key?
I like how you currently have it, though. Going another route might make it too similar to the cheapovegas map.
The chips are fine, since the map is not to scale. It shows me where they line up, which helps me a lot.
I kind of like the small map...
I would put both "Las Vegas Blvd" and "The Strip!"
Should Ellis Island be on this map?
This is great...look forward to having these references!!
Quote: WizardI had lots of justified complaints about my old Vegas map. Please have a look at the latest one. I would be interested in any comments, because I can still ask for changes. Don't bother to say that Palazzo is misspelled, I already know. Do you think I should ask for more streets, like Harmon, Desert Inn, and Valley View? Should I ask to remove the chips, and have shapes approximating the size of each property? Should I change "The Strip!" to "Las Vegas Blvd."? Do you prefer the big or the small map? Once I nail this one down, I will add others for downtown and all of Vegas. Thanks in advance.
1. I like the big map, no need to look at the key and very easy to read. I didn't match it all up, but I assume all the same casinos are on both?
2. The streets are fine as they are. This will be a "walking map" so no need to add details that will also add confusion.
3. Keep the chips, same "simplicity" logic as above.
4. I prefer "Las Vegas Blvd" for no better reason than "just because I do." A map isn't going to help anyone who doesn't know they are the same.
5. On the big map, the one I like, you may want to consider color-coding the chips for the families of casinos. (ie: all Harrah's properties one color; all LVS another, etc.) This way people will know that to find different rules or feartures they can go to a different parent company.
6. I don't see the Rio?
I like the replacing chips with a figure the shape and size of the property
I like the property shapes as opposed to the chips.
Probably because you're looking in the wrong place, since the map is upside-down.Quote: AZDuffman6. I don't see the Rio?
Who draws a map with North facing down?
The strip should have both names: Las Vegas Blvd - The STRIP!
I find the chips annoying. Combined with the odd text effect and the angle of the casino names on the big map, and it's annoying. The chips aren't so bad on the small map.
Yeah, I think putting in additional roads would be helpful - but they don't need to be as wide, in color, or even named.
Quite frankly, there are hundreds of maps of Vegas that can be found online without too much effort. If you're gonna bother making a new map, make it unique. But I think the old map is prety unique. I kinda like it with the casinos drawn as they appear. If that map had keys and street names, it would be perfect.

I take that back, I looked again. I thought it was further south behind Luxor or so. My msitake.
Paradise Road doesn't lead to downtown. It ends at Sahara.
On the small map:
All the casinos near I-15 should be numbered 1-6. I.E. The Palace Station is #6.
The casinos on the West side of the strip are 7-20. I.E. Stratosphere is #20.
The casinos on the East side are 21-35.
The casinos on Paradise are 36-39.
Why not just link to a few?Quote: DJTeddyBearQuite frankly, there are hundreds of maps of Vegas that can be found online without too much effort.
Here's a couple good ones:
http://www.vegas.com/lounge/map.html
http://www.vegastodayandtomorrow.com/condomap.htm
Here's my favorite:
http://www.lasvegassun.com/history/map/
It's an interactive historical map.
Initially it looks a bit like your current map, but hover over the buildings and the name pops up. But there's more: There is a timeline at the top. Select a different decade to see how Vegas looked in the past.
VERY cool.
One of my favourite maps can be found at GoingtoVegas.com
Its simple, shows the pedestrian crossings, and major strip and a couple of off strip. locations
Quote: WizardShould I ask to remove the chips, and have shapes approximating the size of each property?
+1.
Quote: WizardDo you think I should ask for more streets, like Harmon, Desert Inn, and Valley View?
+.5 at least. It should help with getting your bearings, hopefully.
Maybe another thing to do is add some scale back to the map. The big thing that stood out to me is that it looks like Planet Harrahwood and MGM Grand are right next door to each other, when in reality PH is by the north side of CityCenter and MGM is across from NYNY, and it's actually about a 10-15 minute walk between them. This should also help if Fontainebleau and Echelon are ever opened; it should be a lot easier to update the map.
Also, the big bend is further south, by Harrah's.
+1 to the pedestrian bridges as well.
Oh, and if you're going to put in Hard Rock, might as well put in Tuscany as well, since it's right around the corner.
1. Please, the #1 problem, is the fact that North is South and South is North. Everyone I have had experience with sees it that way, every other map is that way.
2. Some relative size would be nice, maybe having a large map with every last detail on it.
A fun map. I disagree about including O'Shea's because it is really just a part of Flamingo and it will make the map crowded.
You should include Terrible's, Tuscany and Ellis Island however since they should fit. And Palazzo is spelled Pilazzo. Harmon Avenue should probably be in there as well.
Quote: pacomartinPilazzo is spelled Palazzo.
I still like http://www.lasvegassun.com/history/map/ for it's historical interactiveness.
But there are features on the http://www.vegastodayandtomorrow.com/condomap.htm site that I didn't even realize were there.
Click on the THE Maps link at the top of the page and you get a MENU of alternate maps, including:
Map of: Who serves Coke, who serves Pepsi.
Map of: Corporate casinos - Who owns what.
(Interesting. All Harrah's properties serve Pepsi. MGM, Belagio and City Center serve Coke, the other MGM properties serve Pepsi.)
Map of: Monorail, with proposed and approved expansions.
Map of: Downtown with monorail link. (That monorail link didn't fit on the monorail map, I guess!)
There are additional maps there. Check it out!
There is the problem of the small independent hotel in the middle of the block you're talking about.
Vegas Click strip map
Of course I also link to the Wizard's map, and several others.
Quote: MichaelBluejayI've finally done it.
Not a bad effort. Couple of suggestions: Extend the Monorail to the MGM Grand and include Koval and Audrie (including the dead end).
Thanks for the reminder about the Monorail stop at the MGM Grand, which I completely forgot about! It also turns out that there's a stop at the Convention Center separate from the Hilton. So I added that too, which meant that I had to add the convention center itself.
With a map like this it's a struggle to provide enough info that it's useful without providing so much that it becomes cluttered and unfriendly. It's a balancing act. And one of those places I'm drawing the line is with Koval and Audrie. It would *really* screw up the map, for very little benefit. I don't think I can justify it, sorry. I'm trying to include only the most important stuff.
Didja notice the map has the brand-new bus line from the airport? I can't believe it took until Dec. 2010 for the geniuses at the bus agency to put in a route that goes directly from the airport to the strip. (Actually, it was probably pressure from the taxi lobby that prevented such a route before now.) I probably have the only strip map at present that includes that bus route.

Newbies can't post links.
Anyway, it looks like a mod here removed the post, and the links from the quoted post, so problem solved. I wish the poster had been banned, though, since he's probably stupid enough to keep posting.
Ironically, the link in the Wizard's original post doesn't work either. Well, it works, but it leads to a 404 error.Quote: IbeatyouracesNewbies can't post links.
If you sift thru this thread, you'll note that I am the artist that created the current WoV maps, located here: https://wizardofvegas.com/maps/
While the car rental map is cool, I agree that it was a disguised method of getting traffic to their website. That Google map could have been a stand-alone link.
Looks like Sahara should be changed to SLS at least.
And The Quad has become The Linq Hotel & Casino, and Bill's with the X is now The Cromwell.

I might just be blanking here, but isn't O'Shea's part of The Linq?

Agreed. If the map is being updated, there's little reason I can see not to not completely update it.
So "X" out Riviera, as well.
I like the logos, which makes it unique, but like others have noted, it distorts proportions. If you instead provided a footprint of each, you could better judge how far apart each casino is (and better show just how large a lot of them are).
As personal preference, I'd like more cross streets, than fewer because they serve as good landmarks if you don't use the map while actually walking. You can say "Oh, yeah, we're crossing Harmon, so we're almost to X". I think marking where the pedestrian bridges are would be helpful as well.
All of that said, if I'm honest, aren't most people here either regulars enough to know where everything is or are new to Vegas and would just use Google Maps on their phone? Do your stats say this is a heavily used feature on the site?
Quote: BrewfangrbAgreed. If the map is being updated, there's little reason I can see not to not completely update it.
No one said the map is being updated. This thread was started in 2010 and was brought back to life by a brand new member who posted spam. The current map was last updated in 2013.
I can't find a link to this map on the WoV website, so probably few people other than DJTB knew it is still on the website. The closest thing I can find is https://wizardofvegas.com/hotels/
Actually, some of the needed updates have already been done, and sent to Zuga. But when I sent them, I also made a comment that the map link is missing. I therefore figure he's got a reason for removing the link, so I haven't persued getting that page updated or making any newer changes.Quote: BlueEagleNo one said the map is being updated.

For the record, I used the WoV search function to look for "map". The link I provided was the first hit.
Regarding the lack of additional details or minor streets on my maps, my goal was reference and style, not navigation. Take a look at the older map versions linked on the bottom of that page and you'll agree I met my goal.
You can use you map app for navigation and detail if needed...
Although I've added some major non-casino items, the casino criteria was that it needed to have a hotel as well as table games. That excludes O'Shea's, Joker's Wild and perhaps a few others.Quote: BrewfangrbI might just be blanking here, but isn't O'Shea's part of The Linq?

My fault. I completely misunderstood. Sorry everyone.
