hm.. numbers game by the President of Dover Downs to get the state to offer concessions?
I would like to see how much in bonuses it gave out to it's executives.

Seems to me like they are the most directly affected business from the Mlife (or whatever it's called) that opened up by the NSA. Dover was a very popular place to run off to from DC if you wanted to do a little gambling but didn't have time to go 4 hours each way to AC. (Dated by my having left DC almost 10 years ago, but unless you wanted to drive up into the WV mountains, that was your option.)
Used to ride the train From Baltimore to Charles Town race track. If the train ran late, they moved back post time for the 1st race.

Not fair to you as a Baltimore boy, but I think of Baltimore as part of the DC metro area I was referring to. It's an aviation thing; IAD-DCA-BWI is considered one metropolis for us. That mega-casino wasn't put in 1/2way between them for nothing...

Why, no, I don't know, and I am one who has done that. Do tell.

Not much difference between 13k earnings and losing money. Either you're right or they'll shut it down.

Babs, I can't believe you typed that with a straight face. And without any kind of smiley added to show sarcasm.
candy store. Before his book was published, of course.

Don't know about DE casinos, but Charles Town could really do better with some operating changes, looking to Parx as an example:
1) Better dining options...Charles Town's food is mediocre at best, and there's nowhere near the casino other than fast food. Parx offers lots of dining options.
2) Offer a better range of table games...some $10 blackjack and $5 craps would be nice at the off peak hours. Offer midi-baccarat, where players can touch the cards. MD Live doesn't offer midi-baccarat, even though all their mini-baccarat games have $100+ minimums. Parx offers a nice range of table minimums...even $15 blackjack and $10 craps on Saturday nights.
3) Offer more themed slot machines...Charles Town has always resisted the licensed themes, even though their Perryville casino has plenty of them. Parx has lots of new machines.
Quote: wrxrobMy win/loss statement for 2013 has me around $1300 in the hole for Dover. Does that mean, I made up 10% of their annual profit? LOL
LOL always knew all the gamblers here were propping up casinos throughout the world because of their HIGH LIMIT reckless spending :)
What's interesting is DJ said the report says "all figures in thousands" which would be 13,000,000. not 13,000. But I don't see the actual report in the article. So hard to say, and I have to do actual work now so no time to google it out.
Either way, I'm sure when the additional casinos in MD open (1 in downtown Balt. this summer, and one right outside DC in a couple of years). All the DE casinos are in trouble...their market was mostly PA and MD and those people have (or will soon have) much closer gambling options soon.
Quote: vendman1Also Dover, is in the ass end of nowhere even by DE standards.
I take it you haven't been to Harrington!
Quote: wudgedI take it you haven't been to Harrington!
Well OK Harrington is also in the middle of nowhere....Harrington is the only one of the 3 DE casinos I haven't been too. I had a buddy that used to swear by the place...said the poker room was full of chumps. But it seems really small. So I never bothered to make the schlep.
Well, you know what they say about women pilots who fly upside down !

Doc,
Who said I typed that with a straight face? Evil grin, maybe. But sarcasm, no. Evidently I'm missing some urban slang reference or something, but I am, in fact, a licensed pilot with an acrobatic endorsement who has flown upside down, in a Great Lakes biplane that allows for it. So I want in on the joke, WHICH is still not forthcoming from either of you. I say again, Do Tell.
Quote: vendman1I live in the Balt. suburbs. and the casino(s) in MD have to be killing DE. The one at Arundel Mills, MD Live, is packed every night and I know most of those gamblers used to go to Charlestown or one of the DE casinos...Either way, I'm sure when the additional casinos in MD open (1 in downtown Balt. this summer, and one right outside DC in a couple of years). You can't really blame them. MD Live has much better slots, and if you play at the $25 level for blackjack, the rules are a lot better than WV, with S17 and surrender.
I've been to DE Park and Dover. DE Park is hosed because they're right between the Baltimore and Philly markets, and there's no real reason to go to DE Park over Philly or Baltimore. The casino is also smoky and nothing worth going back to...minimums were at least as high as Charles Town.
Dover is about 45 min south of DE Park, and really is in the middle of nowhere, unless you live on the Eastern Shore or maybe Annapolis. I went to Dover Downs once, and the casino didn't feel very upscale at all...I remember it being dark, and unlike MD Live which wove the table game pits throughout the casino floor, Dover seems to have cleared out a block of slots and just thrown the tables in. The mins were better, but again, nothing memorable.
I'll be interested to see how much the mins drop at MD Live once Horseshoe opens. If the Light Rail is a viable way to get to Horseshoe, that could really influence people's choices, since parking at MD Live is terrible. The games will largely be the same since MD regulates table game rules so heavily. It'll come down to convenience and the Caesars branding (especially WSOP poker and Total Rewards program).
Caesars is usually extremely competitive when they enter a new market. At least they were in Ohio. Be prepared for generous promotions and bounceback to get people in the door initially. The game rules are generally better at Horseshoe properties, as well.Quote: silversonic2006

I'm liking the sound of Horseshoe Baltimore more and more!

From the websites of the Horseshoe properties I've read about (especially the one near Chicago), it seems the rules are better. I'd guess the Baltimore location will probably offer better games at the higher ($50+) limits, like single 0 roulette (MD Live's $100 high limit table is 00), Macau style baccarat, and double deck blackjack. I remember reading MD caps craps odds at 10X, so I'm sure Horseshoe will go that high with theirs (I believe the one near Chicago is 100X odds).
