Los Angeles braces for Carmageddon this weekend, as the 405 across the Santa Monica Mountains shuts down for the entire weekend.
It's so bad that they had to contact Lady Gaga and ask her to tweet about the road closing and urge everyone to stay home for the weekend. Erik Estrada is doing PSAs. Jet blue is offering a 28.8 mile flight for $5 for people who want to go across town from Long Beach Airport and Bob Hope Airport .
How vulnerable is our society to disruption? If I was a terrorist, I would dump a load of radioactive material on this highway. It would take a lot more time than fixing a bomb breach.

As long as Lady Gaga blesses us we will be OK. Being from the East Coast is there a reason they close the road or is it for fun?
I have a bewitched egg that I use to play VP with and I have net over 900k with it.

The 405 is in need of repair.
I would be very surprised if they are able to finish in just one weekend.

They've been repairing the road without closing it, but there is a problem with the bridge at Mulholland Drive. They must close down the freeway. While there are other roads that cross the mountains, they are very small.
The bridge was built 50 years ago, and the freeway opened up underneath it two years later. Now it is the busiest freeway in the world, and they want to widen it. So they must replace the bridge.

I'm sure you're right, but are you sure? Having driven the 405, 401 in Toronto, and 90/94 in Chicago, I'd never have thought the 405 was busier than those other roads.

I guess my statement was dated. The 401 in Toronto is now the busiest. But that section of the freeway has fewer alternative routes than most places. It is fairly rare to have a mountain range in the middle of a city.
They have to route everyone downtown. So they are hoping that people will just stay at home for the weekend.
