Oh, and I found this on the Wikipedia entry. Feel free to beat this dead horse.
Quote:Infinite Bottles of Beer on the wall," a nerdish variant. If one of those bottles is taken down, there are still infinite bottles of beer on the wall (thus creating an infinitely repeating sequence in the form of The Song That Never Ends
Also my candidate for best song ever written.
Changing the tune would not change the ego trip of some who are called on to sing. They would try to make ANY anthem their own.
Quote: RonCThere has been discussion over the years about replacing the National Anthem with an anthem that is easier to sing. That wasn't the problem last night. The anthem was hijacked by someone trying to make it "her own" instead of just singing it as written. The anthem is best (in my opinion) when everyone joins in the singing (even if they miss some notes like I do) but people who do what was done last night prevent that from happening.

You are very correctr here. While the words and music to the anthem were made seperate, plenty of people sing it just fine. The guy they had doi9ng it in Chicago during the playoffs was fantastic. Yesterday we had a singe who thought the song was about HER and not the USA. Maybe the NFL would be smarrter to actually have these people try out before they go live.

Quote: thecesspit"God Save the Queen" was plenty good enough until you guys got all uppity...
It was our de-facto national anthem as well up until the 1930's when Star Spangled Banner was officially adopted.
My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountainside
Let freedom ring!
Why? I understand at the olympic podium, having it be played for the gold medal winner's country, but that's it.
Why does a Tuesday afternoon baseball game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates need our national anthem played? The reason - to make the event seem more important than it actually is. It's just a regular season baseball game.
The Super Bowl may be a good place for the National Anthem, but I think the purpose of singing the National Anthem is to make the customer feel like they are attending an important event.
It is not sung before a musical starts on Broadway. Or before we start every workday.
It's silly.
I believe it's a law to play / sing it at scheduled public gatherings. Plays, musicals and even movies may be exempt because it can take away from the drama building while waiting for the show to begin.
Quote: FinsRuleYes, the national anthem needs to be changed, BUT, I think the bigger issue is the fact that it is sang before every single sporting event.

I always dislike having to stand through two National Anthems whenever I watch hockey or baseball up here. Neither of them are mine, and I don't see why either are needed. In the UK they only have the national anthems sung before a match between two national teams (which is as it should be). Having "God Save the Queen" before a match between Liverpool and Arsenal, where most of the players aren't British would seem.... odd.
I have noticed that the Americans will listen to their anthem, while Canadians tend to sing along.
Maybe the Canadian anthem is easier to sing and/or remember the words?Quote: thecesspitI have noticed that the Americans will listen to their anthem, while Canadians tend to sing along.
I mean if a professional singer can't get it right, what chance does the average Joe have?
(Yeah, I realize I called Christina Aguilera a 'professional'.)
From memory
O Canada, Our home and native land,
True patriot love, in all our sons command,
With glowing hearts, we see thee rise,
The true North strong and free,
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land, Glorious and free
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee...
O Canada! We stand on guard for thee...
The French version is a bit more bloody and involves carry swords and crosses and smitings our forefathers handed out.
For the Star-Spangled banner all I can remember is
"bombs bursting in air,
that gave truth the sight
that our flag was still there.
Oh say does that star spangled banner banner yet fly
Over the land of the free
And the home of the brave"
I much prefer Flower of Scotland or Land of Hope and Glory to God save the Queen... (though the former is an anti-English fight song commemerating Robert the bruce beating up the English in 13th century... though not written until the mid 1960's )

You're right. Remember Daniel Rodriguez, the singing cop from Brooklyn? He would have done an excellent and respectful rendition.

Not a law, I think it just got started in WWII or so and people like it. I know I like it played before the game. Kind of a way to remember why you have it so good in the USA. I have only been to one sporting event in Canada and forget it they played it there or not. I would guess Canada picked it up from the USA doing it if they have the same practice there.
Quote: odiousgambitas far as the current anthem, I think the words are inspiring, but the music is unworthy to be the national anthem
That is because the music and words were not written as one unit. The words were written as the USA won the major battle in the second war of independence. The music was a song that already existed.
Story here.
According to the story, singing the national anthems before sporting events became a regular occurrence thanks to the Canadians during World War II (America entered later). It was played before all NHL games in Canada and spread to Madison Square Gardens (Rangers). In baseball, it was played in Canadian cities who were in the International league and it spread to the league in the United States and then to all of baseball. So actually, it spread from Canada to the USA, just like Justin Bieber and Celene Dion (sorry).
The Canadian national anthem is played at all Buffalo Sabres games in deference to all of the Canadians attending. They're played at all Canadian sporting events.
I'd go with America the Beautiful.

I've heard it at Bills games as well, except when a 10 year old seemed to get excited/nervous and forgot O Canada. Maybe at all the novelty leagues (Arena Football, etc) also. I always liked that touch, Buffalo being a border city. But I have to say I see no reason to change ours.
