No matter what I do, I cannot win...

Had my nephew's 4th bday party today - of course he did not even acknowledge my existence (as usual)

Had predicted American Pharaoh for months and was going to hit the OTB on my way home from the party, which was in NJ - of course, the Belt Parkway totally backed up and I missed post-time by 5 minutes (of course American Pharaoh wins)

I then bet Pacquioa who, of course, loses

No matter what I do, I lose - I miss winning on American Pharaoh only to lose on Pacquioa - it's as if the universe conspires against me so that I only place losing bets

Then start drinking!!! Maybe that's what you need, AoS. :)

Breaking it down though... your nephew...4 years old.....of course he doesn't care about you. He cares about toys and breast milk (ok maybe not), but whatever 4 year olds care about....of which I have no idea. Get over it.

You didn't bet American P. Why wait until the last minute. That's not an AP move.....sort of like speed count (had to get my SC reference in) :)

You bet Manny....sucker. I don't like Mayweather. 5 times charged with assault and domestic abuse. That is not a very classy guy. I hate that he is 'celebrated'. I would have loved to see him get his ass kicked. But...in sports, I throw out all that personal stuff. You gotta separate. And when you do, Mayweather was going to win this fight hands down. So I bet it (not big). I would have almost considered losing my bet a win....that's how much I dislike Mayweather. So maybe it was a no lose situation for me.

Oh and you get another shot at picking right come September. :)

Cheer up Ace...Bob still worships ya. :)

Was playing in the Orleans today. Couldn't help myself and took the Pac-Man for +170. My ticket went in the trash. You are not alone. Also had 6 consecutive max bet losses in Blackjack. 2@ TC+9 double deck. Today was a rough day added to a rough week. Games will definitely keep you humble.

You just have to keep riding the horse. Heard horses mounted with Speed Count saddles buck hard. Eventually leading to a dirty fall off the horse.

You should maybe consider the Hi-Lo saddle. When you start feeling you can do no wrong and get to high on the horse that saddle will adjust you lower and set you back to reality.

Funny stuff, MaxPen. I appreciate your humor concerning speed count and hi-lo. :) I think AoS will too. He seems to have a good sense of humor.

I do want to comment on your +9 TC situation. I don't know you history or experience level, so forgive me if it seems I am talking down to you. I am not talking just to you, but hoping others might benefit as well.

A TC +9 is great. It's fairly rare. It's what we play through all those crappy counts to get to. BUT...the players only at a small advantage even at that count. What...maybe 4%, depending on exact rules. And, while I am not going to look it up, I believe the players will still lose more hands than he wins even at such positive count. The advantage comes from increased chance of a blackjack, at 3-2 payoff, and secondary, higher win rate of double downs. But it is still a relatively small advantage, meaning lots of losing hands...even @ TC +9.

I think many player (and again, not saying you specifically) over bet their BR in thinking it is some sort of (almost) sure thing. There are no sure things in blackjack. LOL. I think it was famed professional Kevin Blackwood, who said something along the effects that he never bet more than 2% of his bankroll on any wager, no matter how high the count (maybe it was 1%, but I think 2). That goes to show how small the advantage is, even in a really good (rare) count. You are still going to lose an awful lot of those hands, even at TC +9.

Right on KewlJ, thanks for adding that info. Love your ability to keep perspective on the game and admire your ability to thrive playing what some consider a brutal game. Always enjoy your educational posts.

I think my EV at TC +9 is around +4.5% in the game I was playing. EV +9% is the unicorn in blackjack. That is why I generally focus on side bets, more EV with less variance in my opinion.

Ok, Ace, here's some ways you were lucky this week.

You weren't in base camp at Mt. Everest.

You also weren't a tourist in Tibet, in this their high season.

You weren't trapped in Baltimore during the riots.

You weren't even Mike Smith, the great jockey, in a dismal KD showing.

Yeah, the list can go on, but I know you get my point. Nieces and nephews are often a personal disappointment. Hardly any of us bet the KD "correctly"; most lost money. But, OMG, your blessings are so numerous. You're welcome to grump here from time to time, but geez, man. The world is your oyster.

Are you guys kidding?

In my opinion, not a single one of you has put something decent on the line alone "out there" (in the middle of nowhere). What I've seen so far is a heap of mediocrity. Including, of course, the losing.

Only after you've been really up, and then really down, are you really free to figure it all out to discover/establish your real place in the universe. Mediocrity seeps in slowly as we allow the gambling of life to further insulate us from its real possibilities/responsibilities. Paper money to tokens is too simplistic a reckoning. More of what, "If you don't like the forum, then don't let the door hit you on the way out," has to do with fostering a bunch of company yes-men.

Deal with death from the moment of birth to properly get over it, ie, to really get on with life (at the same time). Be careful of that which you come to discard or ignore out of hand. Find/follow your own path.

Add on: Hey, hey, closing in on 333 = 2(153) + 3*3*3 --> 153 = (333 - 3*3*3)/2. Looking for some more 333's. A whole page of 666's at http://www.cadaeic.net/666.htm . But where the heck are the 333's? I like 666 = 1^3 + 2^3 + 3^3 + 4^3 + 5^3 + 6^3 + 5^3 + 4^3 + 3^3 + 2^3 + 1^3. (Just noticed, the "carrot sign" on the key board is number 6.)

Actually I'm about even money-wise

No offense, Ace, but this is a line that all losing gamblers say. lol. I remember when I was a kid, my grandfather was horse racing guy...went to the track several times a week. When you asked him how he did over the long run, he would always say "he was about even". Lol.

I hope in your case, you are "about even" or hopefully even a little in the black. Since your trips appear to be mostly about enjoyment, being even, would indeed be +EV. :)

Ace, life is too short. Why not dwell on the positive. We could be dead tomorrow. Live each day as its last. Focus on what makes you happy in life 😀

Get him to bring you a drink and tip him like a cocktail waitress. You will be his favorite relative in no time.

Kids, like people can be bought.

At least your dog loves you.

But he will say hello and hug other people he sees maybe once a year

I bet there are others he ignores, though.
You really can't let what kids do bother
you, they're rude and thoughtless most of
the time, nothing you can do about it. You
never had kids, you have no idea what
monsters they really are just under the
surface.

I just don't get it - I am his only uncle. He loves my dog, but not me.

He's probably afraid of you, that's usually
the reason. He'll get over it eventually,
in time he'll warm up to you.

It's not hard to understand. 1st, he's just a kid. 2nd, people are everywhere all the time, dogs are just here and there, or now and then, and will give you their undivided attention. Simple math (ish)..

Kids don't think that way. They're afraid
for lots of other reasons. Some don't like
beards, or people who talk too loud, or
are big physically. They don't reason things
out, they just act on impulse. If he still
ignores you in 5 years, that would be odd.
