Yes, it does. But when your choices are a free iphone 4, paying for a good Android, or getting stuck with a very lousy Android, I'm willing to put up with the cult object for a year or so.
Besides, the flash works as a flashlight. That has come in rather handy early in the morning.

Got that app on my Android.

I love it. 80 bucks a year. Everywhere

At least someone with a smart phone can get away from their computer screen and out of their basement . With zero proof otherwise you fit that description to a T.
Don't worry KewlJ is jealous, he doesn't have a basement.
Quote: 1BBDid anyone wait in line for the iPhone6?
Would never do that, but saw 10-15 people waiting in line to just get inside the Apple Store. Presumably they had to wait in line to just get on the list as Apple is smart enough to put you on the list and text you.
And this was at just a run of the mill suburban mall in the early evening. This consumer culture we have is scary.
Quote: DocGot that app on my Android.
I didn't even have a flash in any of the company-issued Androids.
But look, I got you dissing Apple! ;)
Quote: 1BBThere was a brawl at a store in New Haven over these phones, ending with the arrest of several people. Two rival Chinese groups have been coming from New York to buy as many phones as they can. The store is selling them without contracts for $1,000. They are reportedly resold in China for $3,000 to $4,000.
I don't get the whole standing in line all night, or several days, thing, but I can find reasonable motives for it. What you mention is actually one of them. I suppose these groups pay people a pittance to stand in line and get one phone each. Though I'd expect large groups could place online orders for phones just as easily and cheaply, for a lot more phones, too (using fronts, of course).
For the rest, I'd understand if quantities were limited, or there were extras for the first few hundred customers, or something along those lines. Merely camping on a sidewalk for one or more days just because you can't wait for the new phone strikes me as cultish; almost as penance undertaken on a pilgrimage.
Quote: 1BBWhat's a normal price for these phones? A quick check shows $199 to $499 depending on the model. The guy in New Haven is getting $1000. It's the Black Friday mentality without the discount!
No. The $199-$499 is with a phone/data plan with a cellular carrier. If you want just the phone, it costs a great deal more. $1,000 seems just about right for a high-end phone with the second-best OS I know ;)

Got it. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have a TracFone that serves me just fine. I've had it for a few years and would you believe that I couldn't tell you it's phone number? Other than the 203 area code, I have no idea.

I have 2 tracfones now. We each have one. It cost's me a hundred bucks a year each. People look at us incredulous that we don't have a game phone attached to our ears as we walk down the street. To be honest we look back and think wtf? Six hundred bucks,,,,just for the phone?? And it doesn't even float.
Have you run into the situation where somebody gets irritated with you because you don't want to give them your cell #? Mine is just for calling out if I need something it isn't my friend or a chat room.
As long as you are giving out PBA's, I'll share what I read.
Facebook is going to start charging 2.99 per month. This will be hilarious when all these friends disappear and people find out as a group they weren't worth 2.99 per month. lol

What's a tracfone?

I've had the same cell number for over 7 years, issued by the company, and I've no idea what it is. I have to look it up on the company's Outlook directory when I need it.
I should really write it down somewhere...

In Mexico by law all calls are paid by the caller, though you can get a cell phone you pay for receiving calls (few people get them). Naturally when getting calls costs you nothing, numbers are given out freely.
10 cent a minute??? that's outrageous, that's 1980's prices.Quote: Dalex64I do the same thing. I have a cheap flip phone, a 10 cent a minute prepaid plan, and an ipod touch. It ends up costing me less than $10 a month.
How many minutes a month do you talk on your phone? Have you figured out how much you are actually paying per minute?
Quote: 1BBDid anyone wait in line for the iPhone6?
I woke up at 3am on 9/12 or order mine. Saved me the hassle of waiting in line.
The UPS man brought my iPhone 6 Plus around noon on Friday, while at the same time about a mile away the line at the local Apple Store curved all through the mall.
Quote: teddysI have a Pantech Cell Phone (not smartphone) that I pay $10/month for, and an iPod Touch that I carry around also for the smartphone features and apps.
The jig is up, you know. Apple killed the iPod a few days ago.
These relics of a different electronic era will prove valuable among collectors. And given that only a few millions of each model were made, I estimate a high selling price in two years of eighty six dollars for the rarest models, with an intact screen.
Quote: 1BBI have a TracFone that serves me just fine. I couldn't tell you it's phone number
Understandable. You probably don't call yourself very often.
Einstein said, "I don't know my phone number. If I ever needed it, I'd look it up." Quite passé now, who has a phone book anymore?Quote: DieterUnderstandable. You probably don't call yourself very often.
Quote: DieterUnderstandable. You probably don't call yourself very often.
No, I don't but I talk to myself a lot. Still can't win an argument though. :-)
Quote: 1BBI talk to myself a lot.
Some days, talking to myself is the only intelligent conversation I get.
Quote: MoosetonThere actually is some use for smartphones. The saying as I heard it before I got one: "You don't know you need it 'til you get one". Between having a GPS or just a general computer on hand it comes in handy more often than you would think.
Same here. I've found the GPS and Google Maps invaluable. Less so, mostly because of the interface, apps like Waze to look at traffic. Not to mention I find playing podcasts more convenient from the phone than the tablet under some circumstances (as when working out). But I have to say that making and taking calls was easier with the old phones. back then you just dialed or answered. You didn't have to remove a lock screen, enter a password, run the dialer/contacts app, and then dial.
BTW, in Mexico all cell companies offer prepaid phones. these range from cheap old-style "just phones" to the highest end iPhone of the moment. In fact most phones are in prepaid mode. You can even buy a prepaid plan. How this works is you pay a monthly set fee and get X number of minutes and data, but if you run out then you can't use your phone for calls, messages or the web, and you don't get billed extra. You can "recharge" the phone with credits at just about any place with a cash register, ATMs, online, or even receive credit over SMS from a friend or benefactor.
Post-pay plans, where the phone keeps working normally, and you get billed, after you've run out of minutes and credit, are less popular. Back when I still paid for my own phone, I did have a post-pay, because that way I never risked being unable to make a call (imagine if your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and you're out of phone minutes).
Quote:I wouldn't stand in line for one though.
I wouldn't, either.
I would, and try, to wait until the new models are out, the ones people stand in line for, and then try to get the older version at a discount. That's how I wound up, in a roundabout way, with an iPhone 4 (plain).
BTW I've been seeing reports the frame of the iPhone 6 plus can bend if kept in a pocket while sitting, bending, walking, etc.
Quote: NareedThe jig is up, you know. Apple killed the iPod a few days ago.
I saw they killed the "iPod Classic" but I don't think they have killed the "iPod Touch"
If you are in the middle of nowhere, is there still a signal?
Quote: Dalex64I saw they killed the "iPod Classic" but I don't think they have killed the "iPod Touch"
There was more than one kind? ;)
Quote: petroglyphIf you are in the middle of nowhere, is there still a signal?
So far the only place I'm reliably without a signal is in my bedroom (and a good thing, too), rather far from being the middle of nowhere.
Within a city and/or metro area, a signal of some kind is always there. In highways I've gotten so many calls while driving, that I conclude signals are good. I've seen plenty of cell towers near the highways, too. Rural cell service is rather big, too.

Yeah, I suppose it does depend on your definition of nowhere.lol
Sorry to hear it about your boudoir, no service, that is.

before 3pm EST, or after 9pm. I rarely turn
my computer on before 3pm and have no access

Gave me a laugh, thanks. Hurt my mouth (I had a wisdom tooth extraction Monday), but it was worth it. :)
Quote: chickenmanQuite passé now, who has a phone book anymore?
/raises hand.
How else can you fire a rifle in your basement but with a phone book to catch the rounds? .22LR stops in the "K"s. Fat "city edition" only.
in a bucket, filled it with water, and the 9mm bullet
ended up in the 3rd book down. I call baloney on
that. And it was perfect, not flattened at all.
Dunno what part the books play, but definitely baloney.
I have a few lying around. Mayhap some testing is in order.
And to prevent a derail: If anyone has some Apple products they'd like me to shoot, send them my way ;)
but it would take days of soaking to do
that, they filled the bucket and shot
right away.

BTW I got one too. Very handy. I've seen the simpler versions at W-Mart go for about 10-15 bucks. Quite disposable JIC.

I remember during the Cold War Era how our propaganda machine used to crank out those stories about the Russians waiting 3-4 hrs in line for toilet paper and other household commodities. And we were stuck in gasoline lines until our tanks went empty.
Today we all stand in line for the latest BSO (Brite-Shiny Object). Sounds like a win for gossip and propaganda.
We now know what the Apple iPhone 6+ is really all about.
Call it the iPhone 6+Bent.
