I loved the Elvis movies, they came out
when I was in my early and mid teens.
He was very cool to us, except the
singing was pretty dorky. I heard later
that he hated the movies, he thought
they were silly.

They were silly movies that made money for his agent. Elvis thought he might actually have acting skills but Colonel Parker wasn't interested. Elvis should have done the show in Japan which would have forced his agent to get a passport which would have revealed the true identity of his agent.

Earthquakes are rare in Connecticut but we had one this morning. It was in the northeast part of the state about 15 miles or so from the casinos. There was no damage other than pictures falling off walls and I don't think any chips jumped out of their trays. I'm sure our crack news teams will devote their entire shows to this non event. It was between a 2.0 and a 2.2. If you have relatives here there is nothing to worry about.

2. The Southern Trilogy
3. Suspicious Minds
4. In the Ghetto
5. Viva Las Vegas.

Happy Birthday, Elvis!

Too many to mention. My wife and I saw Elvis less than three months before his death. It was at the Providence Civic Center and it was a great night. She has the tickets in a scrapbook somewhere in the bowels of our home.

That's the one. The voice was there but he did too many cover songs and I don't know why. It's not like he would run short of material. Yes, he was fat but you didn't even notice the body. His face was so bloated it looked like it would explode at any moment. I've never seen anything like it.

I really enjoyed Elvis movies as a kid after saturday morning cartoons. I seem to remember Tickle Me the most, since it had gold, monsters and ghosts (Sound more like Scooby Doo cartoon)

I probably didn't notice all the singing but I certainly noticed all the girls.

Isn't that asian Elvis? Gotta love how he doesn't pronounce any words but still sounds pretty... alright. And the pity claps at the end of whatever you call that kind of singing.

There have now been a total of 11 earthquakes all in the same area of the town of Plainfield, CT. The strongest was a 3.3 which is too weak to cause major damage. Residents are puzzled and looking for answers. This is the first activity of this nature since record keeping was begun in 1638. Not earth shattering but interesting nonetheless. See what I did there? Earth shattering. :-)

Not entirely true but they are drilling some world-class wells up here. I'm talking Qatar-scale quantities. We are going to have large quantities of natural gas for a long, long time.

IMO, fracking is a lot like artificial sugar. Has some effect, but no apparent immediate harm. 50 years later, upswing in neurological damage and bladder composition, renal issues indicate possibly premature dismissal of concerns about accrual of artificial molecules in body, damage over time.

Fracking is causing thousands of small earthquakes and fissures in aquifers and sedimentary layers. Hard to say, right now, what kind of damage it's doing to foundations, underground watercourses, deep well and shallow well irrigation, sinkhole formation, all kinds of things hundreds or even thousands of miles away. But the compression waves are real, and the energy from them has to go somewhere. Bridgeport CT is reporting earthquakes. Weird. Related to fracking hundreds of miles away? Unknown. Oklahoma has hundreds of small earthquakes/day. Related to fracking? Almost certainly. Damage assessment? Unknown in scope or scale.

All forms of energy production have risks, but if we want power to run this forum we need to take some risks. If we don't want small earthquakes from fracking, we can always go back to coal mining and deal with more mine subsidence, and other issues.

Yes, all forms of energy production have risks, but ignorant or greedy souls who take short cuts are the real trouble. Careful, well monitored fracking is a possibility. We used to spew oil into the air with uncapped gushers, we devestated thousands of mountains and stream with hydraulic gold mining, see any passenger pigeons, bison or beavers lately? You can go back in time and learn from mistakes but you can't go back in time and undo them.

Pharmaceutical companies (while hardly pure of heart) found they can put all the mild to dangerous side effects of their product in ads and still sell their product. (yeah, I believe they were forced, but it informed the public, and they still sell their product)

The last fracking ad I watched just says it's safe. No side effects, like mild earthquakes or possibly where the water in your faucet can catch fire one day.

I know which kind of advertising I prefer. It wouldn't necessarily mean the end of fracking if companies actually want to make sure they are telling all they know. Not that I don't trust them, as far as I can throw them.

I think she went down at a small Manhattan clinic that was doing essentially outpatient surgery but was rushed to Mt. Sinai before being officially declared dead; lingered for a couple days. Trying to remember what got reported before they stopped talking about it pending legal action. Was under general anesthesia and had a bad reaction, stopped breathing for some reason. I could be wrong. Perhaps SOOPOO knows what happened?

I thought this was an unusual coincedence over the length of time spent. I had almost the exact same scores the last two times I went to the gym to bike. The machine stops at an hour and just flashes back and forth between the miles you traveled and the calories you burned. Today I biked 21.60 miles and burned 501 calories. Sunday I biked 21.61 miles and burned 502 calories.

My wife was watching TV in another room when she called out to me to put Lifetime on. It was a show called "Child Genius" which is a competition between very smart 8 to 12 year old kids with weird parents who push them to excel. I guess it's a series.

One of the competitions was to memorize a randomly shuffled deck of cards by rank and suit. Two of them got all 52 correct. Are you impressed? Our minds immediately go to casinos and gambling but with those brains that's probably the last thing on their minds.

Reminded me of this:

Quote:

Journalist Joshua Foer took a stab at mental athleticism, and not only did he compete at the USA Memory Championship, he set a U.S. memory record.

"I certainly didn't expect the story would end up where it did," Foer tells NPR's Robert Siegel. In his new book, Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything, Foer investigates the nature of memory and his own unexpected journey down memory lane.

"I should, I suppose, begin by explaining that there is a rather bizarre contest that's held every spring called the United States Memory Championship," Foer says, "in which people get together and try to see who can remember the most random numbers, the most lines of poetry, the most shuffled decks of playing cards."

Found this:

Quote:

• Speed cards - Simon Reinhard from Germany managed to recall as single deck of 52 cards in 21.19 seconds

• Spoken numbers - Jonannes Mallow, also from Germany, remembered 364 digits

• Hour cards - Ben Pridmore from Nottinghamshire in the UK holds the title for remembering 28 decks of 1,456 cards in an hour

• Names and faces - a second achievement for Simon Reinhard who matched and remembered 181 names and faces

• Hour numbers - Wang Feng from China holds the record for the most random digits, in rows of 40, remembered in an hour

• Random words - another appearance for Germany's Simon Reinhard who holds the record for 300 random words recounted in 15 minutes

• Historical dates - Johannes Mallow holds the title for remembering 132 dates and the events they are linked to in five minutes

• Abstract images - Joannes Mallow also is the champion of abstract images, after recalling 492 pictures in sequence in 15 minutes

• Speed numbers - a joint record held by Wang Feng and Johannes Mallow, who remembered 500 numbers in rows of 40 in five minutes

When I finally ran into wifi and was able to read this, I was wearing a smile and not much else. I looked around, and laughed and laughed and laughed...

Now I'm home. It's not as funny =(

But whatever epicness went down, it must've been a coastal thing. Only had 3" - 4" in my driveway when I got home. Of course, it's now coming down gangbusters, but whatever. I'll gladly take another 10'. Got my shovel ready and a thirsty bank account waiting to be filled. Could certainly use the $30 p/hr+ work that that much snow provides.

Face, did you leave the casino business? Or are you just doing snow work (I'm assuming removal) on the side.

Left it. Currently drifting, looking for The Next Big Thing, as if that sort of thing exists in WNY =p

Just mentioned the snow thing because some people cleaned right up in November. Some even abused it, pulling in thousands per structure. I could use that sort of disaster right about now lol.

I did that shamelessly once as a business opportunity after a volcano made an epic mess that wouldn't melt. And every place I agreed to abuse was very glad to see me, and pay what I required to want to do make my abuse happen at their place "yesterday, please!" If I had to be less abusive, it wouldn't have created the extra supply of the service suddenly needed, in the form of me.

New miscellaneous topic:

Why would Caesars keep sending me email messages about limited-time pre-sales of tickets for performers I have never heard of? Just got one from Hard Rock Las Vegas (for "Chayanne"); got one yesterday from Cherokee (for "Caleb Johnson"), and I seem to get them from all over the country from casinos I have only been to once ever. Don't they have enough of a profile on me to know there is no chance at all that I would be buying such tickets?

Actually, they probably do know you are not in a prime demographic group for such things and that nothing in your past history indicates the slightest interest in such tickets, but its still a cheap way of promoting the concerts and making you think the casino is thinking about you.

Because it is somebody's job and they need to look like they're doing something to keep it a while longer, and this is what they have to work with? Or in the case of "Chayanne" because they think you're gay? Buy anything in lavender with your Reward Credits lately? (Yeah, I got the same email. Dunno who or what he is supposed to be, but... I think folks who like lavender might go see the guy in that pic, along with people of the female persuasion, whatever he supposedly does when they get there.) I gather he probably does whatever he does in Spanish? Maybe he'd be real 'OMFG fabulously famous' to me if I spoke lavender Spanish.

EDIT: Are you sure the Chayanne guy spam wasn't from Caesars? I deleted it so I can't check, but mine had to be from The Empire, 'cause I'm not on Hard Rock's lists at all. Am I? Nah, sure I'm not. Been there, didn't ever sign up for the t-shirt, had to be Caesars' Planet Hollywood or something like that.

My mistake. I said Caesars at the beginning of my post, but then I incorrectly said Hard Rock. The promo email was from Planet Hollywood in LV.

I was playing trivia crack. It's this Facebook app where you can play against your friends answering trivia questions. Each question has four answers to choose from. For this particular question the 2nd answer said "all of the above".

That is amusing. Were you able to tell if they were trying to cleverly trick you, or if they just put the "all of the other answers" option in the wrong place?

I tried that app as it was getting popular last week. Personally I find the questions terrible. Most of them are super easy, and then BAM you'll get one that's nearly impossible unless you're an expert in whatever niche the question is about.
