Quote: onenickelmiracleI saw a bald eagle today flying by the side of the turnpike, it was really amazing and so cool to see on the fourth. I had thought I had seen one flying past my house, but it was half a mile away, too far to be sure it wasn't something else. They should always be greatly protected even if no longer endangered.
White head, white tail, pretty quick to identify
Quote: rxwineIf you put 100 metric tons on one side of balance scale and a 100 metric tons minus 100 grams on the other side at the same time in a windless room, will it tip imperceptibly slow for quite awhile?
With that small a variance, I think it might come down to the accuracy of the scale and how well it has been oiled/maintained/etc.
Assuming a theoretically "perfect" scale, though, I would bet it would tip very slowly as you say.
I had seen the white tail on the edge of the turnpike, but originally had thought it was a goose. Then when I got closer and saw his wings spread, was confused, knew it was some kind of prey bird. We did drive right past it ten feet away and it was clearly a bald eagle.Quote: odiousgambitWhite head, white tail, pretty quick to identify
It was years ago I couldn't be sure because I was so far away. The body looked dark and head white, but it was as tiny in the sky as could be. That was when I wasn't sure because it was so far, was bug sized far away in the sky.

Red tail hawks are supposedly sometimes confused with bald eagles. Size and colors are different but at a distance it could be mistaken for the wrong bird. (mr google says so anyway)

In principle, any weight imbalance should make a balance scale go down immediately. But you imply a balance scale that is built to hold over 100 metric ton on each side -that is going to be an enormous balance scale with lots of steel structure. That kind of scale is almost certainly not going to be sensitive to a weight imbalance of +/- 100 grams, indeed unless it was made by NASA or the NIH for very high precision it is almost certain that the structural steel of the balance weight itself creates an imbalance greater than one gram.
So, I think nothing would happen, the balance weight will not be tuned to a sensitivity to imbalances as small as 100 gram.
Everyone thinks terrorists have to be massive to win, they don't. These uneducated brainwashed teenage suicide bombers are effective, that is all that counts. Its like the Jewish Lobby... they are effective in American elections and don't have to have massive numbers, just enough to tip the scales.
And its not really religion. Most of the yacht hijacking dhows were Islamic but some of them were Jewish financed. The NSA traced the hijacking coordination and ransom negotiations to Jews not Arabs.

Its a heat wave here and I can barely pump enough blood to cool myself much less stay alert and concentrate but I am indeed wading thru material on frankincense and myrrh (originally sourced to Punt now known at Puntland), as area of Somalia well known for hostage taking. Fading in and out of consciousness with this heat and my ticker doing constant battle, I would much rather be doing just about anything else but I do want everyone to know that I will eventually find the reference to NSA intercepts that traced the finances of one hijacking syndicate to Jews not Arabs.
Anyway, when there are two gas stations across from one another, and one has gas for 2.65 and the other has it for, not 2.62, but for 2.45, why on earth to people go to the expensive one?
Less people at the higher priced gas station might be worth it. It's not about money, it's about nobody being in your way and getting back on the road quicker.Quote: RigondeauxObviously the Jewish/Isreal lobby is powerful. I don't find that anti-semetic in the least. It's just a fact. Remember when Hillary and Trump took turns groveling before that conference, ALPAC or something like that? Also, one or two people here might have heard of Sheldon Adelson.

Quote: RigondeauxThe stations I'm thinking of are rarely that crowded. This happens all the time out West because we have Arco as well as Shell.
Arco does not accept credit cards and charges a fee for debit cards. That's what makes them great. You don't have to subsidize someones credit card points. I wish more stores offered cash discounts at true value instead of people paying cash having to subsidize all these credit card users.
There's one close to me now that has UX(.5 and 10.) I didn't have time to sit and play them all off last time but I'm looking forward to getting gas there soon. I can probably get a free drink out of them too.
What really annoys her is I don't stop to get gas until I'm running on fumes. I have run out a few blocks away from the gas station before. So now she's paranoid it's going to happen again at any time( ten years later)
I'll get gas when and where it's convenient.
I don't remember how much it's supposed to "cost" to drive one mile, when taking into account gas, wear and tear, etc., but I think it's around $0.50/mile. So, if you go 5 miles out of your way (2.5 there, 2.5 back), you're costing yourself $2.50 in gas/wear+tear/etc. just so you can save $2.40 on gas. Not that people probably go that far out of their way to get gas, but for those that do, it might be costing you more than you're actually saving.

What are your views on charging the handicapped an ADA differential?Quote: MaxPenI wish more stores offered cash discounts at true value instead of people paying cash having to subsidize all these credit card users.
As with many, I treat these matters with a very broad brush. If they wear flowing robes and weird stuff on their heads, I dub them Arabs (sometimes Camel Jockeys, even if there happen to be no camels in their country at all). To me Scandinavian means Nordic heritage and Nordic appearance despite recent immigration and citizenship programs making very dark skin and mosques common.Quote: billryanWhy would Arabs be involved? Somalians aren't Arabs?
One need only look at how they eat their oatmeal, called porridge there. In Finland its generaly plain, if its consumed with sugar and fruit... why that is downright Swedish. They use finer brushes in Scandinavia.

The company I work for has about 120 gas stations and they are almost always 10-20 cents more than the ones around it. Believe it or not, there is brand loyalty to both the convenience store brands and to the brand of gas they sell. I don't know the actual numbers but I would guess we sell about 650,000 gallons a day yet the real profits come from beer, cigarettes, and soda,

Quote: SOOPOODry cleaning prices are ridiculous. I just paid over $14 for a suit. The single shirts are around $2.50. I'm glad I wear scrubs for work.
I have a $2 dry cleaner right by my house. Almost all items are $2 so a suit would cost $4 ($2 coat and $2 pants). It is not unusual for my wife and I to take in 15 items and the bill is only $30. One of the few places I still find good value.

THAT'S ridiculous?? I remember paying like $30 for a suit, and that was almost ten years ago.
Speaking of gas prices, why do they always add that 9/10th of a penny at the end? It's completely useless. Nobody pays attention to it.

You answered your own question. Nobody pays attention to the 9/10 of a penny but I'm sure it adds up to millions pretty quickly for the gas stations and oil businesses.
On a totally different topic, here is a picture of me when I was around 23 in my long hair era. Click on the image for the uncropped version.
and that 9/10ths is federal law which is a wonderul 'trust fund' deal that means roads keep getting built so more gasoline can be sold.

Wouldn't it add up to MORE millions if they just rounded up that 1/10th of a cent?? When I pay $1.89 9/10th for gas, that is functionally the same as $1.90 to my wallet. Just put $1.90 on the sign and be done with it!!

When I was posting about gas prices a while back, I struggled with the best way to represent the nine mills, but it slowly occurred to me we forget it's just normally done as $1.899 in the above case. I think years of having the gas stations try to hide the 0.009 part got to me, and you and others too.

So would a place like Vegas just stock them in the hotel? Or would they drive around on a platform on those billboard trucks waving at passerbys? Would they be delivered by flying drone to the 15th floor window? Would they be sitting by players at the BJ tables?

Where were sex robots when I was single?!?
If worst comes to worst, though, if I ever get divorced they will hopefully have the technology worked out by then.

Because you will buy more gas being fooled by the 9/10 cent trick.
especially if he puts the 9 mills in tiny size!
Quote: WizardBecause you will buy more gas being fooled by the 9/10 cent trick.
Doesn't make sense to me. People buy gas because they have to. You don't buy more than you need.
It's not like they're at the store and see a TV for $1,999.
