Why wouldn’t Off-topic threads be marked (here I tried an asterisk) to stand out in the Recent list?
Question:
With the new rule, why do such forums as ‘Religion’ or ‘LGBT’ still exist?

Have to agree, get rid of all the
offensive forums or you'll have
new members posting in them.
Or members that haven't been
here in awhile. There are hundreds
of banned topics here.

Good point. Move the threads to an archive if mgt wants. But kill the topic areas.

Agree.
I guess without politics and religion etc we all start agreeing
It says in the description that as long as posts don’t violate federal law, nobody will be punished for what they say there.
This section probably can’t exist under the new rules.
Quote: AxelWolfMy guess is people know exactly what's appropriate to talk about and what's not. Of course, you have people that will try to see how close they can get to that line. Then they come up with all kinds of excuses of why they believe it's appropriate while trying to spin their comment. How can people not know what's controversial and what's not? One just can just assume they're talking to a snowflake, whatever it is you think might trigger them just avoid saying that. Why is that so hard?
Maybe people don't know what is appropriate anymore. Nowadays hardly anyone even knows exactly how many genders there really are. Used to be two but now if you had to have a dollar for each you would need atleast a couple real bills and a bunch of counterfeits.
Why should one have to tiptoe around a snowflake? They are fast melting and leave no permanent mark. Why is everyone intent on building an abundance of safespaces to keep them from melting?
There really is only one answer. The lessons of history have yet to be learned.

Wait, nothing has really happened of interest, and people are suggesting more changes?
Bah. Humbug.
Because snowflakes are themselves a product of culture.Quote: AxelWolf. How can people not know what's controversial and what's not? One can just assume they're talking to a snowflake, whatever it is you think might trigger them just avoid saying that. Why is that so hard?
In the years of Enlightenment, religious people were ‘snowflakes’, sensitive, ‘triggered’. Yet if the libertines and philosophers had refrained from ‘triggering’ them, where would we be now?
Free speech implies offense. If you are pro free speech, expect to offend several of your loved ones. It is a price to pay, but worth the spending.
Everything’s controversial at one point. Shying away from controverse means not talking at all.

I would guess because the new policy was agreed upon between Mike and LCB management, and then announced, all before giving a heads up to the engineers who run the website to clear out the old categories. One could easily (well, if you're a good engineer) auto-close all topics in those old sections, remove the links to the sections from the forum index, and prevent new topics from being created there.
For posterity, of course, you could leave links to them in a "graveyard" or something. I suppose if all links were removed, eventually you wouldn't even be able to search the old threads with Google, even if they still technically existed with a direct link.
you would have to be Nathan like not to know what's appropriate to talk about and what's not. I'm not saying I agree with the new policy because I don't. I think there's lots of other ways they could deal with the problem and make everybody somewhat happy for the most part. I think it was a knee-jerk reaction to the out of hand comments made on the gay thread. It obviously went too far for someone. But, it is what it is for now. We're going to all have to roll with it or deal with the consequences. I think it's fairly easy to know what the mods and The Wizard think is appropriate and what isn't.Quote: MaxPenMaybe people don't know what is appropriate anymore. All that has happened is we are back to how it was supposed to be when DT was created. DT was supposed to be where off-topic things posted. At first it was, but as WoV kept growing and new management took over, it all drifted back. The gay thread was really not any more out of hand than the many Trump threads were, but as stated, it touched a nerve somewhere.
