Big Bang is a cute show. In the show Sheldon knocks and says the persons name 3 times and he has to finish his knocks even if he’s interrupted.

City: Bac Ninh, Vietnam
Casino: Phoenix Casino

This wraps up my chip posts from Vietnam, I think tomorrow I will make a short jump over to a new country for two chips.

Today's chip of the day is from the Phoenix Casino in Bac Ninh, Vietnam. This casino took a lot more effort to get to then casinos normally do. The casino is about a 65-70 drive away from where I was staying in Hanoi. It was going to be about $25 each way by taxi so I decided to rent a motorbike for $8 and drive there myself. They give you the bike with very little gas so I had to find a gas station but google maps was no help and the locals tried to help but the language barrier made it tough. After 30 minutes of driving around I finally found a gas station, funny thing is from the gas station back to the highway I found another gas station.

I drove to Bac Ninh where the casino is without any issues. The speed limit for bikes was 90 km/h but my speedometer didn’t work so I don’t know exactly how fast I was going. I figure I was doing more than 90 as I was passing about half the cars. This motorbike was a much better machine than I had rented the two previous times.

I got to the casino gate where the guard didn’t want to let me in, I kept saying casino and he said no. Eventually he said hotel check in and I said sure why not. He let me in and I parked my bike in front of his little security hut. I figured I would just leave it there while I fake checked in and went to the casino. About halfway to Bac Ninh I realized that I had forgotten my passport at the hostel but I decided to try and get in without it as I really didn’t feel like turning around. I was able to bluff my way into the casino using my driver’s licence even though they were asking for my passport. I played dumb and since the ID check is 99% to make sure that locals don’t gamble I didn’t have too much trouble getting in as I am clearly not local.

The staff as usual were amused by the white guy in their casino. I got looks and some players trying to help me as if I looked lost or something. I bought some chips and headed for the $20 BJ table where I won $40. They didn’t have $1 chips so I went to roulette and lost $16 for a grand total win of $23 (kept a $1 chip), woot! The BJ was dealt oddly in that they dealt the game face down but after I looked at my cards they would turn them over on the felt and the game was played normally as if it wasn’t a hand held game. Seemed like a giant waste of time to me. Part of the casino was a shopping area where they sold extremely high end watches, purses and jewelry, way out of my price range. There were 15+ tables not including the high limit room which I was told I couldn't go into.

I headed back to the gate to get my bike and the guard seemed thoroughly confused as I said thank you and good bye. He had no idea why I was leaving as he thought that I was staying at the hotel. The drive back was mostly uneventful despite some light rain. At the high speeds the wind was so strong as it hit me. Also the highways were quite sandy and I had broken my sunglasses earlier in Vietnam so I didn’t have any. 3 different times I got pegged with a rock from a car’s tire, each time it stung quite a bit as it was coming at me very fast!

In the end it was worth it because I have a funny story to tell and a chip from a casino that not many collectors have been to!

The chip is white with 5 sets of lime green edge inserts. The "centre inlay" is white and orange with the casino name in dark red. The lighter red image in the middle of the chip seems like it should be a phoenix but it looks nothing like one. Honestly I have no idea if that thing is anything or just some random design.

With the Phoenix being a mythical bird, it's probably a serious challenge to decide whether a representation is accurate or not. Usually they are depicted with spreading wings as the bird arises from the ashes, but not in this case.

I don't really think that's a random design on the chip though. My imagination thinks the five flared designs at the top represent a spread of tail feathers, like on a peacock or a proud rooster, with the bird's main body being at the bottom and left. At the end of that swoop is the head, but I'm not sure whether the beak is that point facing right toward the full part of the tail feathers and the other point (toward the letter H) is the crest or the other way around.

Or perhaps this is a drawing of a solar corona, and the artist was thinking of the Phoenix Suns.

Wow I actually can see a bird with the way you described the beak and the head. Very cool, I never would have seen that otherwise.

City: Nam Ngum, Laos
Casino: Dansavanh

Today's chip of the day marks a new country for this thread. The chip is from Dansavanh Casino in Nam Ngum, Laos. The casino is situated in the mountains almost 2 hours from Vientiane. I made my way by tuk tuk to the hotel with a free shuttle to the casino. I am very glad that I decided to take the shuttle instead of renting a motorcycle as the roads were atrocious. I originally got off at the golf course without realizing that I was in the wrong spot. They have two small casinos in the golf course area, one for slots and one for tables and slots. I lost at the golf course while I waited for the shuttle to come back so I could go to the actual casino. The actual casino is massive! It had 15 tables in the main area plus 5 VIP sections and a separate area for slots. I ended up losing early and chasing for a while to the tune of a $480 (USD) loss. All gambling is done in Thai Baht but the cage will exchange most currencies.

I got a free buffet and the food was pretty solid. Rice, stewed duck, stewed chicken wings and some random veggies. While I was eating this woman that was watching me play sat down to eat with me, I assumed that she wanted money as she kept telling me how much she lost. She eventually did, I said no and went for more food. When I got back to the dining hall she was gone and I was invited to sit with three ladies. I did since I didn’t want to be rude. They asked about the other lady and I told them she asked for money and I said no. I’m pretty sure they were going to ask as well although they could have been hookers too. Who knows in Asia??? I grabbed a brownie to go and then took the shuttle back to the city. The shuttle let me get off around where my hotel was which saved me a tuk tuk ride from the hotel that the shuttle stops at.

The chip is red with a mixture of edge inserts. There are 4 triangular light red inserts and 4 flower inserts with light pink petals and a blue centre. It is also possible that the petals were originally white with the red bleeding onto them, I can't tell for sure either way. The centre inlay is white with the casino name and all other writing in black. For some reason the "S" and the "V" are capitalized in the name when they aren't on the casino website. The denomination is in Thai Baht as that is who the clientele are. I am not sure what the "B" and the "CC-2" mean but I assume one of them indicate which set of chips this is from.

My guess is the “B” is for “Bhat”, and “CC-2” is the location. Did you get this chip from the golf course casino?

I am curious why all the printing is in English, even though the main clientele are from China and other Asian countries. Is it in Chinese on the back?

Possibly for the "B" but I definitely don't think the other one is for the location. I got this chip in the main casino, both casinos used the same chips.

Actually the main clientele are from Thailand but I get your point. Both sides of the chip are identical.

City: Savannakhet Laos
Casino: Savan Vegas

Today's chip of the day is from Savan Vegas Casino in Savannakhet, Laos. My sister and I took tuk tuk to the casino for 200 Baht even though the local curreny is Kip. Savannakhet is right on the Thai border so some of the drivers live in Thailand. The drive was uneventful except that in the back of the vehicle was the drivers very young child sitting in a box. I guess it was take your kid to work day :P

I played 200 Baht minimum BJ and won 4200 Baht. As was standard in most casinos in Asia I was able to exchange USD to Baht and then back again before leaving. The BJ was the closest to North American BJ that I had seen in that the dealer was fast and there wasn’t a card burned before every hand. The cards were hand shuffled by the dealer at the end of the shoe. The dealers were good because they actually deal this game everyday unlike most other casinos where BJ was only opened on request. Maegan sat in the restaurant and used the wifi for the couple hours we were there. After I was done I joined her and had spicy chicken with rice. The chicken was cold and the rice was hot, one of those needed to have their temperature changed for sure.

The casino was Vegas style with a ton of slot machines and a good mix of tables games. There were a ton of elephant sculptures inside and outside of the casino. I like elephants so the decor suited me quite well.

The chip is red with 6 white/brown/white edge inserts. The centre inlay is white with the casino name and logo in yellow. No surprise the casino logo is an elephant. The denomination is gold with a black border and cash is on the bottom in red. I like this chip a lot better than yesterday's as it is a cleaner centre inlay. I mean the design not the cleanliness.

Thanks again for the posts PokerGrinder. I by chance/luck/fate/coincidence/ happened to email this property a few days ago. They didn't reply. Very well known and rumored to have horrible customer service and lousy food. The reason for my email was that the web site offers a 1000.Baht room for 4800.Baht. I simply asked about getting the reasonable rate. No reply as I say and I'm not alone. If you join the club, you get the 1000.Baht rate. The rooms are no where near a 4800.Baht room quality wise.(apx $150.usd) The property also sold/taken over? a year or so ago. Thai's don't actually like the place but it's the only show near their rural towns.

City: Bavet, Cambodia
Casino: Crown Casino

Today's chip of the day is from the Crown Casino in Bavet, Cambodia. How many Crown Casino's do we have in this thread now? This chip starts the return to Vietnam for this thread and the last city that I have to post from my Asia trip. Seeing as I got back on April 12 I think I made pretty good time on posting the chips... not! I think I can hear Doc chuckling already.

Crown casino had tables in both USD cash and Dong cash. They also had a couple of chip tables but not many. I won $18 playing $10 minimum baccarat. I then had lunch at the free buffet for players. They had a couple different dishes, the noodles with veggies were quite good. I then snuck out of the casino past the bag check because I didn’t want my bags back and headed across the street to the next casino.

The chip is grey with 8 purple "edge" (close to the edge) inserts. The centre inlay is white with a purple border. The casino name, logo and the chip denomination are all a non shiny gold with a black border.
