Re: the restaurant. Sorry to hear it was so bad. Not to be a jerk, because you have a right to expect a certain level of quality, but you were in an area of extreme poverty, where many of the residents don't have running water, flush toilets, electricity, or heat (they use wood stoves). Chances are your steaks did not go to waste. Pine Ridge is a tragedy we don't acknowledge in this country. When I lived in Sioux Falls, I dated a guy from there. The stories were heartbreaking.
Here's the wiki if anybody wants to read more about them.

Thanks for the info, I didn't think to check Wiki.
I had no idea that the area was so poor. I guess you don't realize when you are just driving through. Just another reminder as to how lucky we all are that we have those basic necessities that we take for granted when so many go without.
Quote: PokerGrinderThe chip is made by RTP which if I remember is based out of Las Vegas and the P stands for plastics. I can't seem to find where the company has been referenced already in the thread.
Ayecarumba first pointed us in the right direction in 2012 with this post.
Later in 2012, in this post I pointed out what I thought was an erroneous attribution to RTP in the MoGH catalog. It is certainly possible that I made a mistake myself -- that did indeed happen once back in the late '60s when I thought I was wrong but wasn't.
In 2013, rdw4potus made this post of a chip he said was from RTP.
In 2014 with this post, I asked whether anyone knew what became of them, but I don't think I ever got an answer.

City: Mobridge
Casino: Grand River
Well this is exciting Grand River Casino is the 900th Casino Chip of the Day!
I tried to collect this chip two years ago while driving down to Vegas. I did not get this chip until last month though because I got the time wrong for when the tables would be opening and on top off that I had crossed into Mountain time meaning I was even earlier. So because of time restraints I was not able to collect this chip and just moved on to Deadwood. Well like I said I did collect this chip last month when again I was on my way to Deadwood. It took me a while to get on a table because the casino was giving away a truck and therefore the tiny casino was crammed. After waiting for a seat at one of the 3 tables they finally opened another one. I played half a shoe, won $50 and high tailed it out of that smoky sardine can.
The casino opened in March, 1994 and is owned by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The casino is located about 4 miles outside of Mobridge, SD. The casino has 250 slot machines, 5 BJ tables and 4 Poker tables.
This is one of my favourite models of chips, I always enjoy any chip with a metal inlay. This is a Bud Jones product and it is the model with the left over right diamond. The chip is white plastic with 4 dark blue edge inserts. There are 8 blue triangles around the metal insert and the four suits as well. When I look at this chip the triangles around the insert looks like a sun, I wonder if they meant for this. The metal inlay is very simple, the casino name, location and denomination are all engraved.
I wonder what it looks like if you cut them in half? What holds the insert in place?
Quote: AyecarumbaVery nice chip! It is in excellent shape. I like the metal insert chips best too.

I wonder that too! I wish I had grabbed an extra one to cut in half. Next time I find one I will have to grab it.

I remembered seeing an article with photos of some chips cut in half, showing the insides. I thought maybe that article was linked in the "Handy References" at the end of the index to this thread, but I couldn't find it there.
Eventually, I came up with this post from 2012, in which I linked to a thread from 2007 in another forum. That was the article I remembered with the photos of cut chips. Unfortunately, all of the links to the chip images in that now-8-years-old thread are now broken, so we can't look at them any more.
There is a link in that Handy References section at the end of the index -- I think it's the Chipology 101 link -- that has some photos of metal-core chips along with just the metal cores.

Yes I remember when I was first reading through the thread and found that link but it was already broken by that point. I took a look at the Chipology 101, very cool link, thanks for sharing it.
City: Mission
Casino: Rosebud
Today's chip of the day is the Rosebud Casino in Mission, SD. The casino is about 10 feet from the Nebraska/South Dakota state line. Like yesterday's chip I had tried to collect this once before and failed. I was heading back up north and staying at a casino about 90 minutes north of Mission, SD. I was already pretty tired by the time I got to Mission, I followed the big casino signs that ended and told me a broken down old building was the casino... it wasn't. I stopped at two different gas stations which each gave me separate directions and neither led to the casino, so I gave up. This time I as I was driving there I decided that no matter how long it took I was not leaving the area without my chip. I followed my GPS and as I cross the state line I look to the side and there is a giant building. I thought, no way it could be that easy, turns out it was. I really have no idea how I didn't find it last time as it is simply off the main highway after you have left Mission going towards Nebraska. Anyway I got my chip and won about $10 at the casino. The dealers and pit bosses here were super friendly and some of the best dealers that I have ever seen.
Rosebud casino is situated on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. My usual sources and Wiki were not able to provide an opening date. The casino has 250 slot machines, 5 BJ, UTH and 3 Poker tables.
My chip that I collected seems to be brand new for two reasons. First it looks spotless and second MoGH has two $1 chips listed and mine is neither of them. There is no indication on the chip of the manufacturer and I don't think I have seen a chip like this before. The chip is white with 2 pairs of light blue edge inserts. In between the pairs are 4 light blue lines. As you can see in the picture the centre inlay is slightly lower than the outside of the chip. The inlay is a shiny white with the casino logo in the middle. The denomination is noted in black.
Quote: PokerGrinderThere is no indication on the chip of the manufacturer and I don't think I have seen a chip like this before.
If you had made this post a year ago, I would have brashly responded that the chip is from Gemaco and has the distinguishing feature of those two sets of edge inserts at 10:00 and 4:00 in your image. I have generally described those as looking (to me at least) like the tips of a pair of slip-joint pliers. Some Gemaco chips show longer "tips" than others and some have a contrasting color between the tips.
Since you posted your chip in 2015 instead of 2014, I have to admit to a slight amount of uncertainty, though I suspect the chip was indeed manufactured by Gemaco.
Here's the reason for my uncertainty: Last January I posted my newly-acquired chip from the Tortoise Rock Casino in Twenty-Nine Palms, CA. That chip has these very same characteristic edge inserts. In that post, along with a ramble about the difficulty the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians had in getting the casino established, I described what appears to have been the demise of Gemaco. It seems to have been absorbed into Gaming Partners International. Rather than posting or quoting what I found then, I'll just point you (and others) to that linked post from last January.
As far as you the chip not being Gemaco because it being 2015 not 2014 that might not matter. The chip although in excellent condition does have a few wear marks that would allow it to have been on the floor for a year. It would make sense that this is a Gemaco product, also possible that the company that absorbed them still makes their chips.
City: Deadwood
Casino: Gold Dust
Today's chip of the day is the Gold Dust Casino in Deadwood, SD. This casino does not have any affiliation with the 3 Gold Dust West Casinos in Nevada. Gold Dust opened in 1990 and is the last (or the first depending on where you start) casino on the Main Street strip of casinos. I have been there twice, the first being back in 2014 but they were under major renovations so the only thing that was available for use were a few slot machines. Last month when I was back in Deadwood I was able to collect a chip as they had long since finished their renovations. The casino is very nice now and I was told that their steakhouse is one of the best restaurants in town now. Sadly I got to the casino 15 minutes before the restaurant was closing and I didn't want to be "that guy".
I am surprised with the renovations making it look like a new casino that they didn't get new chips. The chip that I collected is from their 2nd series of chips, the first coming in 1990, the 2nd doesn't have a date but I assume it was from the 90's. The chip is a white Chipco with a a light blue circle around the centre. In the middle is a giant pile of gold dust with the casino name (Gold Dust) over top of it, the "G" has a sparkle on it. The denomination is in black and the location is in black on what I would call a satin ribbon.
Tomorrow I will post my last chip and then I will have one more to post mid to late next week when I get back from a short poker trip.

Well Doc apparently I am going to reply to your post twice and have three straight postings. I was looking at a casino page on MoGH and found an exact replica (different colours) as my Rosebud chip. MoGH has it listed as a Bud Jones product, I know they like to list a lot of chips as BJ but I figured it was worth telling you. The casino chip is from the Lucky Eagle Casino in Washington.
City: Deadwood
Casino: Franklin
Today's chip of the day is from the Franklin Hotel. I previously posted a chip from the Silverado Casino which is across the street from the Franklin Hotel. From what I was able to gather they both operate as individual casinos and are not physically attached in any way but they are definitely connected. They share a website as the Silverado-Franklin Historic Hotel and Gaming Complex. I don't think the Silverado has a hotel, only the Franklin does. The website really doesn't give enough information on the weird set up. Just being in either casino you would have no idea that they had any connection whatsoever,
I collected this chip while playing about 5 hands of BJ last month. For the life of me I can't figure out why I didn't collect this chip two years ago. I had in my records that the Franklin was closed/renovating. Problem with that is I asked multiple employees who have been working there for over 10 years and all of them said that they didn't go through any renovations. Now I am just thoroughly confused as to why I didn't play at the Franklin and collect the chip two years ago.
The chip is a very basic white Paulson LCV. The centre inlay is white and is textured, There is a green three leaf clover with the denomination inside of it in black. The hotel name and location are also in black.
City: Fort Thompson
Casino: Lode Star
I am surprised by the lack of traffic even for how slow this thread has become. Anyway this is my last post for quite some time as any collecting trip at this point involves a lot more travel now. With this chip I now have a full set from Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, I have a trip planned for next summer where I will be able to finish Indiana, Ohio and, Missouri and the last casino I missed in Illinois, other than that I will have to go either to the east coast, west coast or down south to continue my collection. I think I am rambling at this point but this what was going through my head as I was entering this new chip into my list.
Anyway today's chip of the day is from Lode Star Casino in Fort Thompson, SD. With a little research I was able to find an opening date of 1993. The casino is owned and operated by the Crow Creek Indian Reservation. The casino has 215 slot machines.
I found this casino on MoGH a couple of years ago when I started to compile a list of casinos with table games that I could eventually visit to collect a chip. With this casino however, I was not 100% sure that they had tables up until I actually walked into the casino. The casino doesn't have a website, their Facebook page hasn't been updated in years and the first couple of times that I called the casino to ask, (during what should have been peak hours) nobody would answer the phone. With this lack of information I kept it on the list and figured I would keep trying, well a couple weeks ago I called and someone finally answered! I asked about the table games, but the man seemed confused and handed me off. I asked again if the casino had BJ and the second guy thought about it and said he was pretty sure they did. He then gave me what he thought were the table hours of operation. With this information I decided it was more than likely that the tables did exist and stopped in on my way to Council Bluffs for the week.
The casino is pretty much right in the middle of nowhere South Dakota which caused some problems because I kept thinking I would find a gas station and I didn't. My GPS had me within two minutes of the casino with my tank on empty, I got to the casino and thank G-d there was a gas station across the street. It wasn't open but I was lucky that the pump was 24 hours by credit card. I walked into the casino which is very small and right there at the front door are 3 BJ tables. Kinda funny now that the guy on the phone wasn't sure if they had BJ. There were no dealers and all the tables were closed so I thought I was out of luck. Turns out the casino was just so dead that the dealer was in the brake room and all I had to do was ask and they opened up the table.
I signed up for a club card while the dealer shuffled the cards and spun my $15 in free play, sadly I only won $2 and won another $2 on $14 of free play at Harrah's in Council Bluffs. I don't think I got my expected value on the free play lol. I played two shoes and felt very fortunate to have not lost as I down about $80 of my $100 buy in. I ended up winning $23 and took a $5 chip and $1 token for myself and 3 more $1 tokens for other collectors. The dealers at the casino were really friendly, I think they were thrilled to have a player and it helped that I think I won about 90% of my hands when I had a tip up. Good karma I guess :)
The $1 token is silver and is in pretty rough shape which isn't surprising as it's 22 years old. The front of the token has the casino logo in the middle (logo with colour on MoGH). The token issue date, and casino location are on the bottom, with the casino name at the top. The back of the token has the casino name with a giant "1" in the middle with a star through it. At the bottom of the token is the mint mark CT, I knew I had others with this mint mark but couldn't find it on the internet, not sure how you originally found the manufacturer with so much randomness on the internet Doc. Anyway I searched through the thread to find a token with the same mint mark and found it on the Deadwood Gulch chip that I posted back in August. The mint mark stands for Casino Tokens, Inc.
The $5 chip that I collected is a Chipco satin finish chip. Both sides are the same, although the not pictured side has a lot more white around the edges where it has been worn down. The chip is a mixture of red and pink with a star in the middle. The casino name and the denomination are in yellow at the top and bottom respectively. Around the edges of the chip it says Crow Creek Sioux Tribe and Fort Thompson So. Dakota in black.
Quote: AyecarumbaThanks for the posts PG! I enjoyed them very much. How far is it from Deadwood to Ft. Thompson? Was the casino slow because of the day/time you visited, or is it the remoteness of the location?
I am glad you enjoyed them Aye, I enjoyed posting them. Lode Star Casino is about 250 miles from Deadwood but I didn't visit Lode Star on my most recent Deadwood trip because Lode Star's tables aren't open early in the week which is when I was in Deadwood. I visited the casino on my way from Winnipeg, MB to Council Bluffs, IA last week. I think the slowness of the casino was a mixture of the two. I got there on a Sunday around 11pm and there were maybe 15 people in the casino. I think it is just such a remote location that they depend heavily on visitors from the reserve. I know I personally would never be in that area of the country if I wasn't there for a chip and I don't see any reason why I would be back. The casino is about 2.5 hours from Sioux Falls which is the closest bigger city I guess.

Randomness on the internet??? Whatever gave you that idea?
I don't necessarily believe what I find on the net, and sometimes I point out (or even mock) what appears to be absurd information, but I do pass along a bunch of what I find to be at least plausible.
One thing I stumbled across a few years ago was Roy Mode's page on casino tokens. Until this morning, I had never bothered to add it to the list of handy references at the end of this thread's index. If you try that link and click on the word "Legend", you will get a .pdf file that tells a fair bit about token mint marks, and I think that is where I learned the meaning of the CT mark.
BTW, your Lode Star token looks to be in remarkable shape, and the mint mark is surprisingly legible. Sometimes it's a complete guess as to what the mark is.

That is a very helpful link Doc, you should definitely add it to the list of handy references.
The picture looks a lot better than the actual chip, the mint mark is very visible but the token has a bunch of dings and dents. They aren't that big a deal but I would say of all the tokens that I have ended up with, this token is one of the more worn ones.
I did this morning.Quote: PokerGrinderThat is a very helpful link Doc, you should definitely add it to the list of handy references.
On another subject, I just found out that earlier this year Caesars sold their stake in the Horseshoe casinos in Cleveland and Cincinnati. The article I read was from early November and said that within 6 months they will be re-branding and removing the Horseshoe name from the properties. No news yet on what the new names will be but obviously they will come out with new chips. I know both Doc and Rdw have chips from there so I guess they will get to return for new chips. I on the other hand visited both cities too early. I was in Cleveland within a couple of days of the casino opening but that was about a month before I turned 21 so I couldn't have gone in anyway and I was in Cincinnati about a year before they opened the Horseshoe there. I am going to try and make it out there before the re-branding maybe this coming January.
Also I had mentioned sometime ago that the Tropicana Express Laughlin had ordered a whole new set of chips. Well I was on MoGH today and saw the new chips and the casino is now called Tropicana Laughlin.
Quote: PokerGrinder... Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands ... Tropicana Laughlin.
Thanks for the info, PokerGrinder. I have updated my list of "Chips I might get".
Back when I posted my Tropicana Express chip in August 2012, I said:
Quote: DocThe hotel and casino are now operating under the name Tropicana Laughlin, and Wikipedia claims that change took place in 2010.... I'll try to remember to check that out when I visit Laughlin a week from now.
I did check on that, and the representative I spoke with said he didn't really expect them to be changing chips. He said, "We still have signs around here that say Ramada!"
The other Laughlin place I have on my list of chips to get is the Laughlin River Lodge. My understanding is that Dotty's owns the place but plans to keep the table games after renovations are complete next summer. I have seen no indication that they have new chips yet.
I'll have to add Cleveland and Cincinnati to my list, too.

Your welcome. As far as the Laughlin River Lodge, where did you hear they they will have table games after the renovations next summer? All the information that I have found up to this point has indicated that they won't be putting tables in the new place.
Don't remember where I read it, and I might have it completely wrong. An article from a year ago said, "Table games are not currently offered at Laughlin River Lodge but they may be added at some point in the future." I thought that was what was planned for the not-yet-renovated space that they currently have walled off.Quote: PokerGrinderAs far as the Laughlin River Lodge, where did you hear they they will have table games after the renovations next summer?
I guess it's just more foolishness on the internet, but this site says:

Table Games
The Laughlin River Lodge has all your favorite table games including Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, Three Card Poker, and Let It Ride.
Another old post said that they weren't even applying for a license for table games. I thought the "restricted" license also placed a limit on the number of gaming machines they could have, but I may have mis-remembered that, too.
First, it seems that Jett acquired the former Searchlight Nugget, just a block downhill from their Terrible's Searchlight. A June 2015 article describing the change is here and says of the purchase and the dealings with the NGC, "The Nugget operates 50 slot machines and a couple of table games that are open on weekends. The license was conditioned to allow just 100 slot machines and no table games." Maybe some day ....
Jett also acquired the Gold Strike in Jean, NV. Their web site is still goldstrikejean.com and says, "We’ll ask you pardon our dust for while as we make the Gold Strike, soon to be Terrible’s Road House, an even better place to stay and play." On another page, it says, "While you’re here, grab a seat and enjoy live Blackjack and Roulette!"
Best I can figure, they plan to keep the tables running there, but I don't know when they might change the name and get new chips. If anyone passes by Jean and can check, I will appreciate whatever info you can provide. MoGH shows a Terrible's Road House players card but no new chips. I'll add the place to my list just in case.
Quote: DocI may have had bad info on the Laughlin River Lodge, but that doesn't keep me from looking again at my list of Chips I might get. In my internet wanderings this morning, I came across two things I had overlooked before. Both of them involve Jett Gaming, the Herbst family's gaming corporation.
First, it seems that Jett acquired the former Searchlight Nugget, just a block downhill from their Terrible's Searchlight. I actually knew about both of these already, the Searchlight Nugget info from about six months ago was that they were removing the tables with no plans to bring them back. As far as Gold Stike/Roadhouse I read about that a couple days ago. The couple of articles I found described all the renovations and changes they are making but didn't lay out any timeline. I guess we will have to just wait and see.

Quote: DocWith regard to Casino Lethbridge, ordinarily when a casino has changed names but hasn't (yet) changed chips, I try to list the casino by the old name in the hope that we can eventually have it shown here by both names with both types of chips. However, since the name change took place eleven years ago and nothing has come out since, maybe they never will have a full set of new chips. The MoGH Chip Guide shows just one 50¢ chip and two brass 50¢ tokens that say "Casino Lethbridge." I think it is very interesting to see that guide agree with PokerGrinder that the casino started operating under the new name in 2004 while one of those two 50¢ tokens shows a date of 2000. I have no idea how to interpret that. Anyway, I'll go along with listing the Casino ABS chip under Casino Lethbridge in the index.
With regard to Casino by Vanshaw, that's strikes me as a rather bizarre way to name a casino. If it's named for a person, why not just Vanshaw's Casino or something like that? No skin off my nose, I suppose.
I am almost sad that I found this out, but I did. Casino Lethbridge after 11 years finally has new chips. Which means that I will eventually have to make my back there and exchange my ABS chip for the new Lethbridge chip. I say exchange because I never played in Casino ABS but when I went to Casino Lethbridge these were still the chips in play. When I exchange my chip for the new one I won't be adding a new chip just finally getting a proper chip for this casino. When I get the chip whenever that might be I will edit my original post of this casino to put the new chip in.
Quote: DocMy take: If the ABS chip was in play in a casino and you received it while gambling, then keep it as part of your collection and add a Lethbridge chip when you can. At that point, you can replace the chip image in your "Lethbridge" CCotD post (making any appropriate edits) and make a new CCotD post for the ABS chip. If you check through the chips I have posted from the Caribbean Islands (and even the one I posted from a South American casino), you will see that many of them were not obtained in the casino that is named on the chip. I just got them as part of playing in a casino, and several of the casinos did not exist any more when I got the chips.
Yes I remember reading about some of the chips from the Caribbean being in the wrong casinos. For me though I wouldn't consider the ABS chip as part of my collection because I never gambled in Casino ABS. I can however do as you said and make a new CCotD for ABS once I have my new Lethbridge chip. Also I will make edits to my original Lethbridge post. Damn OCD is making things tough again. :)
Quote: GWAEI have a trip planned to Florida next week. I have a bunch of casinos on my list but what is the easiest way to get a chip in Florida? Quite often I just walk up to a craps table and ask for a chip. I guess that option isn't available in florida. Do casinos in Florida sell chips out if the cage?
For the ones that are casinos you should have no problem just going to any table. If you are planning on stopping at any poker rooms, I am not sure if you have to play to get a chip. If you do just buy in, fold for one orbit and leave. What casinos/card rooms are you planning on visiting?

I am still planning. I will list them as soon as I figure out our path. We are flying into tampa and out if fort lauderdale so there are quite a fee to pick from.

If you would like I have a complete list of all casinos/card rooms in Florida that have their own chips. If you'd like PM me and I will send it to you.

I appreciate the info but I already have compiled one.
One thing I am trying to decide is if I should visit casinos that I already have chips for. A few years ago I traded and bought for about 40 chips some of which are from florida. Since then I have decided that my collection needs to be chips that I personally get. So my dilemma is whether I should visit a casino that I have a chip from but didn't get it myself.

I personally would visit any casino to which I have not previously visited and collected a chip but that is just me. If you are alone on this venture I say visit as many as time will allow, if your wife is joining you, well gl and don't piss her off by going to too many lol.

It will be me and my wife and 2 kids. Normally when they are with I will have her drop me at front door, run in and grab my chip. I notice that most of Florida's are Racinoa and kids are allowed so we may let them see a few races.

If the list is different than Doc's index at the start of the thread, I suggest just posting it here. Perhaps it will stir someone near a joint with a missing image to collect and post.

Well I had made a complete list of every casino/card room in Canada and the USA where it is possible to collect a chip from. I had talked to Doc about posting it on WoV and we had determined that because of it's size that it would be best as its own thread. The problem that he pointed that I would need to be constantly updating the thread of changes, ie. name changes and casino openings-closings. Now I do that anyway for my other list which is all casinos/card rooms in Canada and the states that I have not collected from yet. If this is something that you think that people would be interested in I can open a new thread and post the link here. I just would have to figure out all the logistics of keeping it up to date especially with the new rule that you can't edit a post.
Hmm, the upkeep in the new editing environment would be a challenge, but having a source of comprehensive information (even if only 100% accurate for a few months) would still be valuable. Perhaps breaking your list up into the regions used in the "Gambling Outside Vegas" category, then posting a regional list in each? Or maybe the entire sheet could be added to a blog page. Can it be edited there?Quote: PokerGrinderWell I had made a complete list of every casino/card room in Canada and the USA where it is possible to collect a chip from. I am not sure if blog posts can be edited, I have not done one before. I agree that it is very valuable, I use mine all the time and would love for other collectors to be able enjoy the fruits of my labour as well. I am headed out of town for the next two weeks to have some fun and collect way way too many chips. I am going to try and do a trip report. I have never done a trip report on WoV before but I always enjoy when others do them so I thought I would try one.
Quote: GWAEWhere you heading? I am 3 days from leaving aND have not done my itinerary yet.
I am doing a loop of Ohio, couple Penn and WV casinos and Indiana. Also the last Illinois and Missouri chips that I don't have then headed down to Biloxi to grind the poker games there before collecting a bunch of chips in Mississippi and Louisiana and one in Arkansas and heading home. Basically the plan is to collect a huge amount of chips, take advantage of a bunch of freeplay and play poker most nights.
