When does the player touch the cards in Casino War?

Last Christmas, a few young Asian men were cheating at Casino War.

A dealer noticed that bets were 200.00 when the player won to a face-card and 10.00 bets when that player was dealt something other than a face card. He apparently spoke to his Floor Man, perhaps on a break. Later he let the floor man know that he felt a small nick in an Ace he dealt.

Surveillance footage of the garage, entrance way and earlier visits on other nights showed that one player would mark the cards with a chip and then sit in first position, later relinguishing his first seat to the accomplice who could now view the top card in the Shoe and know to bet either ten dollars or two-hundred dollar.

The trouble is, I never thought the player touched the cards.. only the dealer.

........... edited to change "not view the top card" to "now view the top card".

You don't touch the cards in 'War' but it sounds as though the player was marking the card with a chip when the dealer wasn't looking.

When I played BJ at The M the dealer made every single payout on top of my cards, including every BJ I received. With minimal pressure I could have marked every 10 and Ace in the deck within an hour or two. I suppose they probably did something similar. A payout just kind of close can be picked up in a fashion that nicks the egde of a card.

Anyway its an interesting peek into the linkages of casino surveillance, garage and walk way surveillance at the Venetian and how even rudimentary recognition programs work to identify people in a crowd.

As ever, the first tip off was the same as in Black Jack: Bet variation from minimum to very high sum.

Dealer would never have noticed otherwise.
