I finally made it to my local casino for my foray into the pai gow poker area. I planned on playing from noon to 5, having dinner with some friends who happen to live in Niagara Falls, then head home. I was down $75 before dinner and figured I'd play to either get up a dollar or loose a few hundred. I sat at a table by myself so I could bank every other. The first dealer that 'tapped out' the original dealer was very weak. Her first hand she had aces and 4's with a straight and set it as straight A, 4, rather than aces and 4's. Since I had pai gow I politely pointed it out to her, she reset it and it was not noticed by any pit personnel. I felt Dan's presence! A man who was sitting at the table but not playing said I should never correct the dealer. I told him in general I don't but it didn't matter this hand anyway. A few minutes later a young couple (early 30's) sits down, and they both take out wads of $100s. The casino will only count 25 at a time on the table, so I stopped payng attention but it was close to 10k. The woman starts betting $300 on 2 spots, and after a win or two goes up to $500 (table max), while the man mostly is betting $500 per spot, also on 2 spots. A friend of theirs also sits down and is betting the table minimum ($15). So the dealer soon deals 9955Joker64 and is stumped on how to set it. She first lays it out as if 4 5 6 Joker 9 is a straight, with the 9 5 in the 2 card hand. She stares at it for a while and realizes that is not right. She then starts to put the 5's in the 2 card hand. The woman had 22 AK and correctly points out that house ways is 99554 Joker6. She was so polite, before she saw my cards, said she really hoped it didnt affect my bet ($25) negatively. I had a push either way. Sooooooo.... a few hands later I'm dealt a straight with an ace 3 up top. The two big players have bet 400/400/500/500. The dealer turns over JokerAAQ764. I make some comment on how that 3rd ace killed me, as I will now only push my staight/ace. She sets it 3 aces Q 7! There is a lot of action around the table, with one pit boss counting the chips, another working on getting the players "Chairman's Club" status, plus the dealer yelling "purple playing" frequently. No one on the casino side notices. So the other 5 hands, which all should have been losers, for a total of $1815, all turned into pushes. I had bet $30, which turned into a winner. So $1845 on one hand! Anyway, I felt justice had been served. They said they could not automatically make the new players "Chairman's club" members without their play funneling through the computer. The guy, who was as nice as could be, made no stink. He just wanted a shot of Crown Royal while the 'regulars' can only get C and C. He settled for the C and C. (He was a recently retired hockey player who is well known in our community)
So, has anyone ever seen an error this big by the casino?

I'm not quite certain what the error was or what caused it: dealer inexperience or distraction.
I'm sure the others would have been pissed had you spoken up but it seems that you knew she had mis-set her hand.

It was dealer patheticness. She did not fully know the rules of the game she was dealing. The entire table knew she misset her hand. I would guess that before I ever put $1 on the table I would have known how to play 3 aces. My point is wondering how a multimillion dollar business can allow someone so inept to be responsible for that much money.....

Maybe because once they get a few of those "free" drinks in them, the players are usually even more inept than the dealers.
Bean Counters look at Training Budgets but Bean Counters can't do anything about "losses".

Close. As I mentioned in my Aria blog: "Russian kid was playing $200 a hand on Ultimate Texas Hold 'Em ($400-$1000 in action every hand, no trips), and I watched the dealer make a HUGE error -- she mispayed him when she didn't see her two pair! $1,200 swing for the player. If only I could get that kind of dealer..."

So, not quite as big as yours but only one player.

When I played World Poker Tour All-in Hold 'Em in Arizona, I saw a ton of dealer errors. One night I tabulated $280 in errors, all in my favor, and all corrected by me.
I resolved not to correct anymore after that night...

Many a dealer has been scheduled for a game they have never been trained on. Many carney games are Jump Into The Deep End type affairs. I heard one craps dealer say that is how his first night on a craps table was. I could hardly believe it.

I've seen some incredibly questionable hand settings at pai gow tiles, more than likely for the exact reason you cite.

I had a bank teller overpay me once. And I got way too much change at a liquor store one time. If the business itself got to operate the registers, it probably wouldn't happen, but businesses have to hire humans, who often couldn't care less.
