Quote: DJTeddyBearThe same can be said of the Nigerian Princess email spam. Everyone knows that they are scams, right? But if people didn't keep falling for them, the spam would have ended.
I've been getting lots of those lately, in several variants. They're not as funny as they used to be.
Anyway, you'd thing any person with three working neurons would figure out they're some kind of fraud. But you'd be surprised what the mention of easy money does to working neurons.
In any case, the porn slappers do seem to be offering a legitimate service. I'm sure some scams are run there, it goes with underground and quasi-illegal activities, but by and large they must deliver. If they were running onlys cams, the authorities would have a compelling motive to remove them.
A well run operation could easily enough intimidate the girls from advertising on the cards.
A small robo call operation could easily flood all of the phone numbers on the cards being handed out so that callers would find it impossible to get through to the girls on the cards. Robo calling with messages could also flood the voicemails as well. This in turn would no longer make the cards a cost effective way of advertising.
Quote: NareedThere's one way to make them go away: put them out of business. Evidently the business model works, or they'd be elsewhere doing something else.
The question is "how?" I admit I've no idea. Maybe large signs by the slappers' alley reading "Prostitution IS illegal in the city of Las Vegas and Clark County"
There are plenty of signs and notices that say that prostitution is illegal. The clip joints even pass out brochures that say that prostitution is illegal. People don't care. They hire a hooker anyway. They go to the clip joints because cabbies tell them that the girls there wink at the law.
In Mexico they call it "zona de tolerancia".

I mean right where the cards are handed out, not elsewhere.
Or maybe hand out cards with men's mug shots and the legend "I was arrested for solicitation after calling the number on one of those cards." Hell, that might disuade a guy or two, maybe even three.
Quote: AlanMaybe they should be required to have a warning label (similar to cigarettes) on the porn cards, that "hiring a prostitute may be hazardous to your health and could cause gonorrhea, chlamydia , aids, etc., so go ahead and gamble with your life."
Sheri's Ranch is a legal brothel in Pahrump. I think it would be better to legalize prostitution in Clark county, confine it to certain areas, come down hard on soliciting in legitimate hotels, and reduce the STD's, rapes, and mugging that normally accompanies the trade.
Instead of pornslappers there where would be a place where you could look at brochures inside the hotel.
You can't stop vice, so legalize it, control it, and tax it. Also you can protect the girls by providing counseling services to leave the business if they want to. You don't have pimps, and you can throw out the dangerous or totally inebriated johns.
When I'm walking the streets of Las Vegas or any other major US city, I keep to myself and don't stop until I get to where I need to. I generally avoid large crowds of people because the risks are much higher. That's why when I walk the streets of Vegas between say, Ballys and Venetian, I go on the west side of the street, where there is generally no street traffic. Yep, I lose 2 minutes walking the streets in each direction but I gain that back because I avoid the porn-slappers, slow moving folk, and the roundabout street vendors around Harrahs.
Anyway, the goal is to avoid risk, and when you're walking the strip, drunk and in the evening, and you're not a pleasant drunk, you're much more at risk. It's like driving the freeways late at night. There's a bunch of drunks on the road, so you drive differently -- taking care to pass them and give them lots of room.

I think the trade would still go on, most likely as a low-cost / low quality / high volume alternative to the "legal" joints. Regulation always creates opportunities for those who are willing to operate outside the law.

Hell yes. but illegality gives many more such opportunities, along with the likelyhood of mistereatment and people trafficking.
Besides, brothels in Vegas would work much like strip joints and casinos. there would be tourist and locals places.

So would little kids dressed up as super heroes @ Halloween.

They may be. But if so, it's a civil matter. The cops can't arrest you for violating copyright or infringing a trademark. You can get sued, though
Quote: buzzpaffBut even in civil court, how would you prove I am not the real Batman ?
Do you have a valid Bruce Wayne ID? :P
'Gladiators' arrested outside Rome's Colosseum
Well, yeah, isn't that where you generally find gladiators?
Quote:In one arrest operation, police officers disguised as gladiators were beaten up before other undercover officers moved in, according to AFP.

Not too hard to identify the shooter as it's a good quality video
Quote: boymimboPart of the 3 card monte scam, more than the bet itself, is the distraction and pickpocketing that undoubtably goes on.
Not to diminish your other defenses, but I carry my wallet in my front pocket and have never been the victim of pickpocketing. In an especially crowded area I'll put my hand in the same pocket.

The video is simply stunning. Thankfully, the shooter was a lousy shot.
Maybe Caesars should include bulletproof clothes as an addition into their Total Rewards catalog. Miguel Caballero
When that happens, I'll save up my rewards credits instead of blowing it on the buffets!
