I think these might be single servings for grade schools or possibly what they offer at a hotel buffet breakfast. I've read that a serving of peanut butter is one of the best sources of nutrition.

I've been handing out bananas, but they aren't very popular. At twenty cents a pop, it seemed like a no-brainer. I'm trying to stay away from things with short shelf lives, as I don't want to feel pressured to go out just because the food might spoil. The baseball playoffs take up a lot of my time this month.

Tucson had its annual Salute to Homeless Veterans, although they don't call it that. Families donate clothes and household goods, and the homeless vets get to pick up free stuff and be treated like heroes for a day. It was interesting, but it was advertised as starting at 9 a.m., but nothing got going until early afternoon, and a lot of people left early. As I'm not a registered charity, I couldn't set up, but I volunteered a bit. I met people from a charity I was vaguely aware of- Dress for Success. They provide clothes people can wear for job interviews. About a dozen barbers and hairdressers were on hand for haircuts and grooming. The portable sound stage was outstanding, not what I expected; the early groups were school kids and a few garage-type bands thrilled to be playing to 30 people, but by dusk, a few hundred people were milling about.

There is a dry river bed about a quarter mile to my east and a closed Dollar Store with a vacant lot behind it about the same distance to the west of my park entrance. There is a woman, who I'd guess is in her late 50s/early 60s, who makes the journey between the two, pushing three overflowing shopping carts. She moves one ten feet and then repeats it twice. She's tough as nails but is beginning to see I'm not a threat. I was out doing an early morning run with six bags when I saw her making her way. I was going to save a bag for her and give it on my way back, but I kept running into more people and ran out of bags. Burger King has a $5.99 breakfast special, and for $2 more, you get a second coffee and hash browns, so I splurged and split my breakfast with her.
Handing these bags out, or even just shopping for them, induces what I call a "givers high." Runners will understand the reference.
Starting my day like this gives me incredible positive energy, enough to carry through the day. Love really is the drug.

They are sleeping/passed out with multiple shopping carts off the side of the road for hours until they need to move on, you will see the same scene 2 -3 days later. There is ZERO chance people can be doing that mid-summer in Vegas without being on somthing to numb the heat.

The weather seems to have broken. It was in the forties last night and today isn't expected to get above 75 today, with a biting wind. Many of the people I feed were wearing only tshirts this morning., as most homeless don't have much more than the clothes on their back so last night must have been bad. I'll be handing out most of my blankets today.
I can't say enough about the sheer joy I experience doing this. It's strange that the key to such joy is right at our fingers but everyone passes them by while chasing their highs.

Thankfully the weather has broken here too. We had two straight nights where it go down close to 60 at night. I had to turn my furnace on.

My Sister sent me a check, partially for my birthday and partly to buy some items for the homeless. This morning, I included a watch cap and two pairs of socks in the dozen bags I distributed. I got ten pounds of grapes for $5, so each bag had a generous portion of grapes, a banana, a packet of crackers, a pouch of tuna salad, some peanut butter, and applesauce. I'm trying to keep the cost under $4 a pop, with mixed success.

I last mentioned this on October 19th, but you keep doing what you do. Let me guess, though. You are quietly funding a charter school with your roulette winnings.

Of course you publicize your charitable acts to receive praise, everybody who constantly talks about their charitable giving does it to receive praise. They want everybody to think they are really great people, that all they do is give give give. Even the Bible talks about if you give something to somebody keep it to yourself. My personal experience has been the more somebody brags about what they do for everybody else always makes me wonder what they are covering up for.

I most certainly don't think I'm a great person. I've received much and believe in giving back. I'm also hoping to lead by example. Your reactions show I'm on the right track.

In anticipation of the coldest weather front in the last few years, I was out last night handing out gloves, caps, and blankets when I was surprised to see two members of the Tucson Community Police doing the same thing. The Tucson Police have a division that patrols and reacts to crimes and another division that responds to traffic accidents, does traffic control, and responds to non-emergency calls. They distributed hand warmers and let people know that several heating centers would be open for the next few days.

Is ‘heating center’ a politically correct way to say ‘homeless shelter’ now? By ‘hand warmers’ do you mean those extremely temporary packets that can be ‘activated’ once? I would hate for my tax dollars to be wasted on those. Gloves caps and blankets are much more cost effective. If you give a homeless guy a cap, what are the odds he’ll still have it next winter?

If you don't give him a hat, what are the chances he'll need one next winter? A heating center is a space where people can escape the cold. I don't know what the others are, but the one closest to me is a bus terminal that normally operates 5 AM to Midnight, when the bus system shuts down. It's open 24 hours a day for the next few days. It's for the homeless and poor families living in unheated apartments. I'm about three miles from the border of San Xavier Reservation, and many houses were built with no heating. Its been years since this area had an extended cold streak.

I love how you leave out the details of your grandioseness. You don't say if the blankets and gloves you were giving out belong to some organization you're with, or if you bought them yourself and you have a pickup truck full of them. Or what is probably the case you had a couple of ratty old blankets and an old pair of gloves and you gave them away to the hobos living in your backyard. By leaving out the details you want us to use our imaginations and I just did.

I pay for everything myself. I bough the gloves and hats off the internet, and picked up almost two hundred surplus blankets at auction.
They were unused full-sized military-typeilitary blankets. Yesterday and this morning, I handed out about forty bags with a hat, two pairs or gloves, two pairs of socks, a granola bar and a candy bar in each one, and gave out about a dozen blankets. Last month, I spent a little over $200 on food, and about $500 on cold weather gear. A typical week is me spending between $100 and $200. I wont be buying many clothes once the cold is gone. Socks, maybe.

I hit up the clearance sale after the back-to-school frenzy subsides as well.
The plastic boxes for storing crayons fit decks of cards almost perfectly, and pencil cases are functionally equivalent to money pouches.

I was able to pick up 72 nice backpacks for under $100, but when I tried to buy a second batch they were over $150. It's a dog-eat-dog out there, and giving a weak person a really nice backpack simply sets them up to get robbed. Or they stay up for 78 hours, afraid someone will steal their stuff in their sleep. I can buy drawstring bags for under fifty cents, so I mostly use them. Walmartplus delivers in strong paper bags. Normal walmart sends food via uber and almost every item is in its own plastic bag. Plus uses the minimum bags and they are great for repurposing.
I search auctions all day for "my job" so looking for stuff is easy. Some companies stock employee cafeterias and routinely sweep out their pantry rather than have someone do regular inventory. A lot of them donate but some auction them off. This week I won a few cases of Progresso Tortilla soup. An 18-ounce can, and a pack of saltines can feed two or three. They are $2.79 in stores but I paid under fifty cents each.
I enjoy stretching the money as far as possible and assembling the bags. Driving around distributing them, especially in my new electric car is fun. It beats the hell out of sitting around watching youtube. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

The plastic boxes for storing crayons fit decks of cards almost perfectly, and pencil cases are functionally equivalent to money pouches.

There's a local store that is .99 cents but is BOGO on almost everything.
Lots of crap, but sometimes some decent canned food or snacks. Occasionally, some socks. There was a bit of a learning curve, but using JIT shipping cut the needed space down to a manageable amount—ten feet of racks on two walls and half of an 8X10 locker.
Much of that is winter gear and will be gone in a few weeks.

I picked these up this morning after running out last night.
Walmart had a BOGO on them.

Those things suck. I bought some last fall and used one the other day. I put on a pair of cotton gloves put one of those hand warmers in between the cotton glove and a leather glove on the outside and 10 minutes later it burned the palm of my hand so bad it hurt for two days. I threw the rest of the things away, nothing but junk. I should have read the negative comments before I ever bought it.

Honestly, first 2 items got so hot, could not get near skin and the activated pads stayed that way for over 8 hrs and had to put in cold water to "kill" them!!! Just bizarre.

The entire back page explains how to use them properly. It's not that complicated. Used properly, they are great. Didn't you ever use them when camping or hunting? They can be lifesavers at cold-weather football games. They aren't for everyday use, but this is a winter storm and a freeze warning, a rare combination for Tucson.

I use them when I ski. Never had an issue. Have worked great for me.

In the fifties? The dead bodies must be piling up!! LOLOLOLOLOLOL Last night it was nine above zero here. When it's the 50s we go outside in t-shirts and shorts.

I used them motorcycling in winter.
What I learned:

Restrict the air they get. As the powder in the pouch absorbs oxygen, they get hot. If you limit how much air they get, they get warm ... slowly. Tearing open a corner of the plastic envelope is usually enough. Ripping open the plastic envelope and waving it around on the way into a glove or boot can make it too hot to touch.

They're stupidly cheap (hooray iron), and I wish they made a similarly inexpensive variant for heating food. (No, FRH's ("rock or something") are not ideal.)
May the cards fall in your favor.

I am miserable when it is in the 50's. This morning when I woke up it was 19 outside, I was wishing for a quick death.

Eat a few gas station hot dogs with some tater tots. You never know you might get what you wish.

This is some of the more bizarre weather I've experienced. Overnight, it was in the high twenties, with wind gusts of 35 or so. A nasty night to be out, but we missed the rain. Right now, it is 54, with no wind, but the wind is expected to arrive around 7 PM for another night of sub-zero wind chills.

Nice try. Sub-Zero means a wind chill temperature of below zero. If the temperature is 28 and the wind is 35 the wind chill is 18 above zero. In order for the wind chill to be below zero the wind would have to be blowing at 75 miles an hour.

Don't forget 0 Celsius is 32 Fahrenheit, so it could be sub zero Celsius.

You claim 18° above 0 is Sub-Zero and you accuse me of nonsense? Yeah right

I think what you are doing is laudable. But I’m not sure if it is really ‘making a difference’. If it doesn’t do anything to get these people out of the dismal situation they are in, but rather, just ameliorates it slightly, I’m not sure much ‘difference’ has been made. I know it’s better to have a cap when it’s cold out, but you get my point.

I have a well off cousin who like you also wanted ‘to make a difference’. He has used resources to build schools for girls in Uganda, and supplied the schools with computers so the girls ‘have more of a future’.

I guess your kindness helps out somewhat for the immediate present, but does nothing for their ‘future’.

I remember a ‘donate your suit’ so poor guys could have a suit for a job interview. To me, that’s effective charity.
