So has anyone had any luck putting a $20 bill between your ID and CC when checking in at your hotel? Rooms is instantly available or a nice upgrade to a suite?

What I want to know is, has anyone ever tried this, only for the clerk to pocket the $20 and say, "Sorry, but there's nothing available...oh, but thanks for the tip"?

I think I've got my money's worth over the years. There may have been a few times where I would have gotten the same room without it but I know I've been upgraded and allowed early check-in on a number of occasions. I've been given suites far in excess of my play.
I don't slide it to them, I openly give it to them in advance.

Why deal with the front desk? Use the app to check-in and get a digital key

You are missing the point. Vegas is a tipping town, and some hotels are real sticklers for not letting you check-in before their check-in period. The employees who are stuck behind the front desk are not compensated in the form of any gratuities like most positions in the service industry so the “$20 sandwich” apparently goes a long ways. From what I have heard. Just wondered if you folks who have flown into Vegas have tried it!

I did a modified version at Trump last month. I gave my ID and CC, and held the $20 in plain view. I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades, and got bumped from a basic king to a 1 BR suite on the 56th floor. I then handed the clerk my $20.
I also got an upgrade at NoMad last May just by asking, but I tipped the clerk $20 when he came through. The bottom line is that it may work, and it also may work without the $20. YMMV.

The app won't offer a free upgrade. The front desk clerk often will, if you ask.Quote: Ace2Why deal with the front desk? Use the app to check-in and get a digital key

$50 is the new $20. You’ll have more luck if it’s a slower time.

I've had luck in the past, but I've heard that heteronormative couples tend to have more luck with it, especially if they mention it's a birthday or anniversary.

And there is no chance in hell that you will go to Disneyland and come back with more money than you went with.

Probably correct on this one. Putting the money in plain view might be frowned upon. Meaning it’s a gray area whether they are allowed to receive a gratuity. This is why they call it a sandwich. Discrete.

When I mentioned "in plain sight," I meant strictly the sight of the clerk. I essentially palmed the (twice folded) $20 but with the top of the bill showing. I figure that's more discrete than the sandwich. From what I understand, they typically take the sandwich, and lay the $20 bill on the counter while they process your ID and CC. The other reason I did it like that was to avoid the situation where I don't get an upgrade and the clerk still has my $20!Quote: VegasriderProbably correct on this one. BTW, there is another Vegas website that has a Message Board which contains a whole section of threads devoted to the $20 trick, by hotel, that you may find useful.

Obviously, the check-in people don't want you to know that.
People who have blogs, various websites, YouTube channels with tips and tricks need as many tips as they can conjure up.
