Too many stories in the news about death threats, when they're not really death threats. I don't think possibility is enough, most sane people should want some decent probability before the courts are involved.

More correctly, a racial slur, profanity at some people, and a death threat. That's more a trifecta.

George Jefferson made up cracker. There is literally no word to insult someone for being white, it doesn't exist. So you say there is a death threat, what are the odds he'll do it? If a threat is absurd, it's not really a threat. It's really a term of dislike and not really a death threat, in most cases. I don't see a likelihood of a murder, which is important. Thanks for your input though.

If 30,000 people get murdered each year and there's 300 million people here in the USA, that's a 1 in 10,000 chance of being murdered. The odds of being threatened with murder are probably 1 in 100 or less.

There is indeed a derogatory term for white people. It rhymes with donkey and starts with the 23 letter of the alphabet.

When I used to play poker at my local poker room, I used to hear about every other week, a player (after taking a bad beat) threaten to kill the other player. No one followed through as far as I know, lol.

Florida high school student, 18, is charged with soliciting murder after offering $100,000 for someone to kill one of his teachers on Instagram - but he says he was 'joking'

Only problem, he doesn't have any money. The children are so messed up by this zero tolerance garbage, they just see this as normal. Too many people just want it easy and want to look away. Free speech should include the right to be absurd to make a point, this kid really is irritated by his teacher. It's America, we should be able to tell people we don't like them.

Quote: dailymail.co.uk

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said: 'It wasn't like this was a bad student, this adult was... did not show somebody who had terrible issues.

'It doesn't matter if someone says I was joking - when you do it and you post it out there on social media, you have committed the crime.

'There is zero tolerance. You want to threaten someone who is part of the school district and just do their job? No. We will hunt you down. The parents were shocked because they had no idea.'

OMG! I think the sheriff just made a death threat, he said he will hunt people down.

I think the odds of someone threatening murder, and then actually going through with it, is probably one in X hundred thousands, at least, if not millions.

Agreed. We live in an age where film critics receive death threats if they don't like the latest Star Wars movie. I'm not sure I understand the poll question but, if it's the ratio of idle threats to serious ones, in the internet age it would certainly be more than 500-1.
Have you tried 22 tonight? I said 22.

I agree with your general point. It's a combination of an era of hysterical fear and one in which we celebrate victimhood.

It's not just the legal aspect of it, but the way the media report it. If someone is told to drop dead, they act like the person needs to be in witness protection. More clicks.

If anything, this exacerbates the matter since you can say certain things to a public figure and then get a thrill seeing them reported.

I'm sure authorities are also acting defensively. Nobody wants to be the one who overlooks a treat that is realized. Even if taking jokes seriously is a waste if time.

Don't really know how to differentiate a real threat from a bogus one. It's probably on the person receiving the threat. I'm sure most do blow them off. When they are hysterics or drama queens about it, it's just gonna be a pain.

you would think making a threat actually makes the intended victim safer if someone making them is sane or at least fears losing freedom, etc. Once you make a threat, you're a suspect if that person is killed. Conversely, if you want to try getting away with things, you keep your mouth shut.

I dont like people going to jail for obvious venting.

One time many years ago when I was in college (must have been 1998), I rolled into a gas station late at night. I went up to the counter and there was an elderly African American woman working there. Her back was turned to me. We she inhaled loudly, wrinkled her nose and exclaimed to herself: “Smells like bologna. Must be a white boy.” I had never heard that stereotype before.

My reflection is this is true because whites are not minorities. If there was a situation where a white person found themselves a minority, and there was some intimidation, implied threats of violence, things would be different.

Is the poll question "What are the odds that someone who makes a death threat will actually attempt to kill someone?", or is it "What are the odds that someone who receives a death threat will actually be murdered?"

Unfortunately, many mass shooters posted manifestos and social media rants before doing the deed. While the incidence of actual attempts is low compared to the volume of threats, the impact of the actual attempts is very high. Think about it like the incidence of crashes/deaths per/ miles driven in the USA each day. While the number of events is low per mile, the potential loss per incident is high enough to warrant mandating safety features and their use for everyone.

I don't believe threatening to kill someone is acceptable "venting". I've seen more than a handful of instances where hot heads in poker rooms took their conflicts to the parking lot. Most of the time security intervened, but one time the combatants came back through the front door. It's sad. There is a line between competitiveness and civility, it is unfortunate that ego gets in the way of both.
