Bill Buckner died today. The reason given by his family was dementia although he seems pretty young to have had it.
No question that he'll be remembered for his error in the 1986 World Series and, being from New York, I'll never forget that game and error.
Nevertheless, I defy any of you to get over 2,700 hits at the professional level of the game. I know that it's beyond my capabilities.
Bye Bill

What a shame. Way too young . A true professional hitter.
As far as the play goes, even had he fielded it cleanly, Mookie makes it to first before he does. Game would have been tied.
Rest in peace.

Great ballplayer who got the short end of the stick. RIP Bill from a diehard Red Sox fan.

A Twitter post revealed it wasQuote: FleaStiffDementia, whether from mild brain trauma, MAP infection or infection by migrating periodontal disease organisms usually starts twenty years before diagnosis.
Lewy Body Disease therefore a MAP infection is most likely the culprit. Contaminated milk, cheese or lettuce. Probably didn't even cause him to see a doctor, but killed him decades later.

His error on the big sportsbook screen is one of my fondest Las Vegas memories. It was electric. RIP Mr. Buckner.

Now he has one more thing in common with Michael Jackson (don't think anyone will get the reference, but I grew up in Massachusetts and that was the first thing I thought of. Joke was "What do Bill Buckner and Michael Jackson have in common? They both wear a glove on one hand for no reason").
If the order of events was an error followed by wild pitch, with the same result, I don't think anyone would remember. 1992 NLCS had a very similar ending with an error in the mix (by Jose Lind, a very good defensive player), yet the only memories of that game are of Sid Bream scoring against Barry Bonds' arm.
To keep things morbid, a much better ending than what happened to Donnie Moore. RIP

Bill Buckner made fun of himself on Curb Your Enthusiasm. It was a funny episode.

I saw that a long time ago- at least he caught the baby.
Even if you want to (unfairly) blame him for that game it often gets lost in history that the Red Sox choked in game seven as a team.
