only a handful of times did i lose it all during the past 5 years and i went to a casino every month (craps, vp, and/or poker) and sometimes weekly.
and i was bummed out that i went home broke.
worse feeling was when i went to Vegas for a week with a $3000 bankroll and lost it all. that plane ride home really sucked.
(Note: it was $ i can afford to lose.)
anyway, this weekend a casino had a promo: earn 10k points and you get a free cruise certificate.
slots: $1 coin-in = 1 point
vp: $2 coin-in = 1 point and 9/6 JoB qualified!
i like cruises and doing the math, i should come out ahead because avg EV= -$92 for $20k coin-in at 9/6 JoB.
at $2 denom, $20k coin-in would be 2000 hands which would take me 3 1/2 hrs.
since there could be a big swing with it being only 2k hands, i brought $2500.
the certificate has a list of free cruises between 7 to 11 days and if you dont like any on the list, you can use the certificate as $550 trade in value for the cruise of your choice. you have a couple of months to book via the phone # on the certificate.
well, i started off putting in $200 and lost it quick. I got angry about that and switched to $5 denom.
put in $300 and hit a quad plus several other 5 card hands in rapid succession. I was now up $400 but at the 10k point mark, i ended at -$1300. :(
and i was surprised that i was ok about losing the $1300 when i walked out of the casino.
i guess mainly it was relative to my bankroll and leaving with $ in my wallet made me feel better.
also, i was treating this like a +EV play and like the Wiz said it not about the outcome but "Was it a good bet?"
now lets see what happens the next time i lose $1000 during my regular casino visit.
edit:
looking back, i should have switched back to $2 denom after i hit that quad to lessen the variance.
then again, hitting a $20k Royal was also in the back of my mind...
But Im curious to know how you feel after you take that free cruise. Just how free is it?
Quote: DRichMost people way over bet their bankroll. If my bankroll was $1000 I would not be betting more than $1.25 if playing machines. If playing table games I would not bet more than $10 a hand.
Last time I played PG Tiles my bankroll was $800, betting $25 a hand I never needed to tap more than $300 of that over the course of 15+ hours of play. Probably could have easily bumped it up to $50 a hand and still not even come close to busting out for the amount of time I played. That game is probably the best bang for your buck....
Does winning a $1000 give you the same rush as before?
It's seems to that you put value on this cruse and felt it was well worth the expected loss(I won't comment on that aspect since that's a personal choice).Quote: 100xOddsit used to be that $1000 was my bankroll for the day.

It might just be that you felt you were getting good value so it didn't really phase you much. Would it have bothered you if the play was worth $2000 in cash but you just ran bad? Would you feel worst if you lost that much going for a free buffet and room comp that was a very slight edge if you included full value on the comps?
Quote: Marvello34Sorry to hear about that. How did this happen? I have heard about casino games where people earn and lose playing games.
If anyone were a Russian bot it would be this person who says such generic stuff like that I mean I could say that to anyone in any thread of this forum
yes. still get joy when winning even $20 in vulturing Ult XQuote: AyecarumbaIt's like drinking coffee... When you first start out, the caffeine keeps you up for days, but over time you build up a tolerance that requires a bigger cup or more concentrated sludge.

no it wouldnt have bothered me on how much I lost in going for that free cruise. like i said, the Cruise has an EV of $550 as trade in value if I don't like any of the free ones on the list. and since I don't know what free cruises are on the list, that's the value I put on it. (the list is custom generated for each person, depending on what they play, their theo, and/or loss.)
I view the loss as a play that didn't pan out.
I once came across $5 denom 10play Ult X with a single 2x.
$250 a spin! and whiffed! also didn't bother me.
'Was it a good bet?'
no on free buffet/room because I wouldn't put any value on the room. I either live near a casino so no need to stay overnight or have free room offers at nearby casinos (ie: atlantic city).
so a free buffet in atlantic city is worth like $15. if the EV of the best game there is going to cost me more than $15 to meet the buffet/room requirements then im no going for it.
