Have fun with that. If I knew how to round up 50 eagles I would get some action on that.

I don't know if this has been asked/discussed yet...

Once the man is killed by the eagles, will the eagles bring me the gun, or can I go retrieve it? If that is the case, then I think there is a decent chance to win this thing depending on how much ammo the gun has.

After writing the above "guide" and thinking about this problem as if it were a video game I arrived at the following answer

Didn't you say before that man was a good and quick shot. If you pick the animals in your spoiler answer, which I won't say because you hid them, I think the man could get off a clean shot at your before your attackers reached him. Thus, my idea of picking the bears and get one to take a bullet for you.

Good question. I would think an eagle is not strong enough to lift the rifle, or even two eagles. However, I could easily buy them defending it until you got there.

That particular eagle can lift juvenile deer, so we're talking low tens of pounds. My 20's era, 6' long Mosin-Nagant 91/30 fully loaded with affixed bayonet runs about 9.4. And I could not imagine another common rifle weighing an ounce more. Thing's a monolith.

I looked into this and the article EAGLES CARRY HOW MUCH WEIGHT? says an eagle was observed carrying a 12-pound branch. So, I admit I was wrong. Having an eagle grab the gun now seems like a darn good idea.

The pic of the guy with the gun is a trap. He won’t be of much help, or much danger if he’s coming at you. From various elements in the pic, he probably doesn’t know how to use the rifle, which looks to be a single shot Remington rolling block rifle

His lean back stance is how an inexperienced shooter shoots a rifle, and he could be flat on his back after the shot. Then look at how he’s aiming the rifle. The sights are well above his eyes, which means he’s shooting blind. He won’t be hitting anything.

Without cover and/or concealment, you are dead. If you can't get out of reach of the gators, you are dead. If the eagles can swoop at you and your only defense is shooting them, you are dead. In fact, if it's you in the middle of an open field, with only any two to defend you, you are already dead.

One of the things that occurred to me, and which I did not include in my previous post, is that if large animals are rushing you (and being delayed and defeated by your forces) it will create a "broken field" or a partial shield that will reduce the chance that a long-range rifle shot will be successful. Obviously strategies like moving rapidly and erratically and trying to keep large attacking animals between you and the rifleman will increase your chances of living until your forces attack the rifleman.

Probably no strategy is 100% assured of success - this is war, after all.

I propose the following further assumptions:

  1. You have a Tarzan-like ability to manipulate the animals on your team to attempt any mission requested.
  2. Animals on your team will attempt to perform mission to the best of their ability. Ordinary abilities for that animal are assumed.
  3. The animals against you will have the same kind of single-minded mission to kill you.
  4. The two groups will start in a Braveheart-like flat terrain, about 50 meters apart to start.
  5. Outside of this battle arena is a forest, eventually leading to safety, shall we say five miles away. Animals can give chase in the forest.

It would depend on location. But, I would have to say X1 and X5. Assuming the rifle has a reasonable amount of ammo and the shooter is skilled, the shooter would take out the fast animals while the 5 gorillas form a protective ring and fend off anything that gets close.

Also, it depends on the terrain, if there are climable trees nearby the gorillas, the shooter and myself could climb into a tree, and that would mitigate a lot of the enemies from approaching us. The Gorillas could pound the bears as they attempt to climb, and the Birds could be slowly picked off.

At about 50 YARDS apart, in sort of a football setup, I might go rats/bears rather than rats/eagles. This is a tough set up because the other animals can just blitz you and the man is going to be firing away for about a minute before dying a horrible rat death (picking the man is still terrible, though). I think these big animals, running full speed, might be hard for the rats to latch on to. So you will need a big animal to take out the other bigs who break through the rat wall.

If you are going big animal, I think Face showed bears are the only choice. I googled gorlilla fights as Romes suggested and was unimpressed. Bears would destroy gorillas, easily.

Assuming you can ride an animal and retreat, bears are also the best option, though I think riding a bear at even half speed might be extremely difficult. If I was just going to make a run for it, I might go eagles/bears. The eagles take the man and harass the other animals and I make the bear escape.

Your best bet might be to sprint along with the bears until you are tired, then ride them. Because, as I said, I don't think you'll hang on when they are doing 30mph. So your max sprint speed should actually be higher than your max bear riding speed.

This is the only way to "defeat" the rats. If you can just run away from them. But if you cannot run away, nothing is stopping a few hundred of them, at least, from getting to you. Not sure how fast they are or how much stamina they have. But I think both you and the bear could out run them initially. The eagles are going to be a bitch, though.

Maybe hiding in a tree would help against rats. It seems like rats are pretty good at climbing. However, if I can hide in a tree, now I want the rats on my side even more. If the other animals are blitzing me, they can never slow down or stop. So if I can make use of natural barriers, the rats get stronger.

Basically, depending on the set up it is def. rats/bears/eagles in some combination. Unless it's something weird like you can swim to a little island and be surrounded by gators. Then axel's strategy of using the gators to protect him comes into play. He can then chose the man, who will be trapped on the island, and attempt to disarm him and force himself upon him.

It would be a challenge for the bears to keep up even a trot for an extended time. They are not built for long hauls at full speed.

The presumed existence of a safe haven completely alters the problem we have been discussing.

Why not have a fort that is 5 miles away, filled with French legionnaires with rifles, as in colonial Africa.

Or an underground bunker, Cold-war style, that is 100 yards away.

Or put a weapons cache equidistant from the two teams, a la The Hunger Games?

These are all interesting ideas -but they are distinct variants of the original problem that was posed.

Sorry for the trauma, but that was hilarious.

The gulls are very aggressive there. I nearly throttled one that grabbed a fish from my toddler’s hand when she was feeding the seals, but there were a bunch of people watching. Flying rats is what they are.

Back to the scenario... Wolves can grab swooping birds out of the air. The open field allows no safe landing zone for the birds to peck at the rats in their talons.. They can’t stay aloft forever, so when they land exhausted, the rats will overwhelm them.
