I usually make it to LV two or three times a year. I have always booked through an online travel site, since it generally saves me a few bucks. When I hear about folks getting their room comped, I wonder how that would work if the room wasn't booked through the casino? Do you have to book directly with the casino to get your room comped?

That is correct. If you have booked with a third party you cannot get your room comped as they have already prepaid the room in essence. You can still get meals or other charges on your account comped in these circumstances.

If you just are looking for a hotel room, it's best to go through the property as they will reduce your cost of your stay by the comps that you earn. Most hotels now have an internet guaranteed rate that will match or be lower than any other internet provider. This started to happen in about 2007 when hotels had a much easier time maintaining their rates with most travel sites.

If you book a package that includes airfare, the hotel will often charge a much lower rate than their published rates as this allows them to sell the room and maintain their guarantee. However, you will lose your comps at this time but can still get comped food.

My advice is that if you plan to play alot and take advantage of comps, book your room directly with the hotel. Otherwise, book a package deal that includes airfare.
