In answer to the original posters (Irfan) question How to solve this? I used order of operations, or if you like, operator precedence. Look it upits easy enough to find.

I think it's pathetic that kids need a calculator to do this stuff. Maybe for the actual calculation, but they should know how to set the problem up, or be learning how to, without mechanical or electronic tools.
