very informative.

The book he is coming out with is available as a pre-order on Amazon. Perhaps Dan would like to say how he prefers anybody buy it.

For full disclosure, I am not planning to be a game designer. Might buy the book if I could get it signed in person.

Aw, shucks.

In paperback via LVA. Or Kindle, for easy links to WOO and gaming. Coming this summer.
It's all game design, how to approach it, with all the tricks of the trade presented (there are a lot), mostly on new game designs from independents.

A couple (not many) of the games discussed are from members here: Paradigm, DJ, and MathExtremist have their stuff put under the microscope. (Lucky Stiff, Poker for Roulette, and Hard Pass).

Congrats on your forthcoming publication, Dan! Very pleased for you that it's going to be in print. I do think, though, that the blurb someone from LVA (Anthony?) said at the end about it being the "only" book available as a development resource is a disservice to teliot's book, whose guidance I used extensively to develop my game. I'm not sure what he's basing his statement on, though, so perhaps in some context it's correct?

Yes.
Part of this may just be marketing, but a part of this may also be because of the focus and intent of the book, which is to define and break out in detail the actual game design steps and methodology in the process of designing casino games. This is quite different than giving general advice and anecdotes, no matter how fine. LVA and Huntington press have read the book and they write the marketing materials.

It is quite a different book, and the specific and concrete processes of game design described in it have been vetted by executives at distributors at DEQ, the Shuffle Master division of Scientific Games, and Galaxy Gaming, who are in the business of building and distributing installable games. It was also reviewed by the Director of mathematics at GLI, who found it comprehensive, and a useful tool for their in-house mathematicians to understand the processes of game design that their submitters had undertaken.

No disservice to the very fine Eliot Jacobson, a fine writer.

Wow. I had no idea you had so many notables already give you the thumbs up.

Gang: Dan sent a couple chapters to me. I also found it comprehensive and thorough, if a bit dry. Then again, considering the subject, "dry" is probably expected.

Well done Dan.

Dave, thanks!
I wanted it to be comprehensive, to include step-by-step walk-throughs of game design sessions, and I tried to make it as interesting as possible. I wanted stuff that comes out of the design room sessions, so I had to have these parts checked thoroughly.

Content was my focus, but what helps with getting cleaner and snazzier language into the book is being assigned a fine editor, which I'm thankful for.

Does it cover what steps game designers should take to avoid getting hit by advantage players. Or as you may refer to them "cheaters" ☺.

Yes, it covers game protection - and very kindly and politely.
It discusses collusion, key cards in card counting, hole carding, and how to design that out of a game without any judgement. Keep in mind that the Las Vegas Advisor is composed of Blackjack Hall of Fame Members. If it's good with them, it's verifiably apolitical.

Most interestingly, you'd be in disbelief as to how kind and diplomatic I was in describing it all ONLY in the non-political terms of not having a game fail because of game protection issues. In fact, I make this a game designer responsibility and even a fault, and not that of any casino patron here.

Again, the goal of the book was to detail game design technique thoroughly, not to espouse any views here.

If you haven't read it yet, you've got a second chance. Today (3/9) LVA posted a reader poll, so the QoD hasn't been updated.
