Yes, football is a team sport, and one game way too short of a sample size to have ANY meaning, but this one is just too easy not to look at and have some fun with (unless you are a Tampa fan).

The number 1 draft pick Jameis Winston and Tampa Bay hosting the number 2 pick Mariota and Tennessee.

I am not super familiar with either team other than knowing they were both really bad last year to have earned no 1 and no 2 picks respectively. But the Tampa was favored by 3 or 3.5, which is basically home field, which assumes the two teams about even (+home field advantage).

Obviously a blow out, with Tennessee winning 42-14. They were up 35-7 at half.

Mariota was 13-16, for 209 years, 4 TD passes, 0 interceptions, and a QB rating of 95.7

Winston was 16-33 for 210 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 interceptions and a QB rating of 6.7

Winston's first pass was intercepted for a TD and it was all up hill from there.

At draft time, we kept hearing that Winston was the guy more prepared for the NFL because of the system his college team ran. Again one game has little meaning. I personally am not convinced either player is going to be a superstar QB.

Mariota would be a perfect 158.333 rating.

Winston would be 63.95.

Still a huge disparity, though.

Is QBR listed in stats on espn box score, not quarterback rating?

Yeah, Total QBR. I think they invented that nonsense.

I am not that much of a stat junkie to know the difference. But as you said, there was quite a stark difference in the two first time starters, first two picks, performances.
