Does it matter where I am when I gamble online?

I am from Switzerland and I have read that online gambling money here is now no longer taxable. So hypothetically if I were to go to Sweden or some other country where you have to pay X amount of taxes on online gambling winnings (I think its 30 percent in Sweden) and won on an online site, would I owe taxes? Let's say I won 20 grand with money that I originally transferred from a Swiss account into that online account. Does that mean that I now don't have to pay taxes because it's Swiss money, or I do owe because I am in Sweden? And even if I were to owe something... How would they ever find that out?

When people travel to the us and win, they are not responsible for taxes. Sometimes casinos will withhold the tax but the player can get it back.

Not true for all countries. As a Canadian I have to file US taxes for any winnings in the US to receive any of the 30% back.

But you get them back, right?

It depends how the taxes work out. As an alien you don't get the same deductions as an American. Usually will get some back.

Thank you. I always thought Canadiens got them all back. I remembered hearing people complain when a Canadien won the main event. It was 8 mil of tax free, guess that is not 100% correct.
