Still, I'll be bumping the reminders as near daily as I can.

Yes. It is also a gambling term meaning somebody who is a recreational player who tends to bet on hunch rather than math. The term is usually used in sports betting. The squares typically bet the favorite and/or the over. The opposite are the sharp players.
What's round?
Quote: DocAt least up through the mid 1950's, the motto for the Cub Scouts was " Be square." I don't know whether/when that might have been revised as slang evolved.
I was in the scouts from about 1975-80 and never once heard that motto. All I can recall now is "Be Prepared."

"Be prepared" was/is the motto of the Boy Scouts, not the Cub Scouts. I was indeed in error, though. I got to thinking about it and looked it up.
The Cub Scout motto is and has been "Do your best." What I was misremembering was a line from the Cub Scout Promise that went "...be square and obey the Law of the Pack." Apparently that line was revised in 1971 when it was viewed as out of date.

Both those ring a bell from way back. I seem to recall wondering at the time what the "law of the pack" was, but was afraid to ask.
From these observations came the jackal-headed god of the dead Anubis, and the practice of preserving bodies through mummification (which really si just an embalming technique)

From this site:
Quote:The Law of the Pack
The Cub Scout follows Akela.
The Cub Scout helps the pack go.
The pack helps the Cub Scout grow.
The Cub Scout gives goodwill.
For those who may be curious, the same site explains that
Quote:Akela means "good leader." To a Cub Scout, Akela may be a parent, a teacher, a religious leader, a Cub Scout leader, or another guide. A Cub Scout should choose a good leader to follow.

Hmmm... An interesting combination of information. A warning? An omen?
Scouting obviously serves a social purpose: to allow people to meet, mix and work toward common purpose and individual growth and development.
But under the surface is the very militaristic nature of Scouting: the participants are basically being exposed to and made to be presupposed to accept a military way of life.
Uniforms, knives, survival skills, merit badges: it all can be related to what Scouts would need to know if, later in life, they join the military.
The "law of the pack" theme is akin to teaching loyalty to fellow squad / platoon members, which bond most likely allows soldiers to willingly accept grave danger in order to protect fellow "pack" members.
It's all very tribal.
When I was drafted into the army and went through basic training, I commented that the only two things I thought they tried to teach me in that eight weeks that I hadn't already learned from the Boy Scouts were: (1) How to hurt people and (2) How to kill people. And I had already learned my marksmanship from the Boy Scouts.
BTW, I have to note that, in spite of the slant that MrV gave to it, the skills taught in Scouting have a lot of value in later life even if one does not participate in the military at all.

I intended no "slant," Doc.
I enjoyed scouting, I considered it time well spent, and regret that it has fallen off in popularity.

Wait til I get to the pyramids. :)
One reason we know a lot about Egypt is that the hot, dry desert climate proved to be excellent at preserving papyrus and buildings. This means in 5,200 years, archeologists will be able to reconstruct the history of the US based on what they find in Vegas ;)
The Taut Line Hitch is by far the most valuable skill I learned from scouting. If you learn to use it correctly, you'll use it the rest of your life.Quote: Docthe skills taught in Scouting have a lot of value in later life even if one does not participate in the military at all.

Cool! I was a Girl Scout all the way through high school, and a waterfront director at a variety of summer camps through college and my 20's. One year I did it with the Boy Scouts (the camp out of Omaha), and they sent me to a special WD BSA camp near Austin, TX to learn to teach the Boy Scout way (rather than Red Cross WSI/SCI certifications GSA, JCC, and YMCA camps use). That was a trip! 400 guys and 3 girls; I got to work with the guys who literally wrote the book on canoeing/rowboating. It's a lot harder to earn those merit badges than those of any other organizations I worked with. I was certified to award Knot Tying, Sailing, Canoeing, Rowboats, Swimming, and Lifesaving. Knot tying was totally my favorite.
That canoeing badge was especially hard and learning it gave me the biggest bruise I've ever had; you had to capsize your canoe in deep water, shake out the water while treading, flop yourself back in the canoe without tipping it again, and get back under way (that was just one requirement out of about 20). Learning to grab across the gunnels and flop your butt into the bottom was about as hard a trick as I've seen; the bruise on my hip/thigh back was the size of a dinner platter.
I agree with somebody else above about lamenting the decline in popularity of Scouting; the meetings during the school year were mostly meh, but the camping and boating was phenomenal. Miss those times so much, both doing them as a kid, and later working with kids on adventures like those. It's a big loss in kids' development to not have those experiences. Very challenging stuff.

In case I didn't make it completely clear elsewhere, I do plan to be there. My wife is making noises that she won't join the gathering this time, just as she skipped the first one, but she will be joining me for the trip. No reservations yet -- still working on details of that April trip we have booked. I usually try to restrict myself to planning details of one trip at a time.
Do they have WiFi?Quote: MrVI intended no "slant," Doc.

Now tell us the real reason you quit ;)Quote: rudeboyoiI was in the boy scouts in 6th and 7th grade. We had some camping trip in the summer with 116o temperature. In Indiana where it's hot and humid. Not many merit badges were earned on that trip. I quit the boy scouts in 8th grade because it was lame and started playing MTG instead.

It's not PC to talk about that..

I look forward to seeing you again.

Same here, though I only take one trip per year. This simplifies things.
Oh, and it's never too early: I've set reminders on my phone for May 16th around 7, 7:30 and 8 pm saying "REMEMEBER TO REMIND DOC TO TAKE GROUP PHOTOS!!!" ;)
Quote: NareedThose planning to attend should say so here.
I'll be there.
But those early mummies were nothing at all like the mummies we know.

I have now booked my flights to Las Vegas for the 2015 Spring Fling. My wife and I will arrive in town on Thursday afternoon 5/14. I haven't yet looked into rooms to book -- my mailed promos don't yet cover May for any of the casino-hotel groups.
Quote: DocSince it has been five days since anyone has posted to this "Near Daily" reminder thread, I thought I could do my part to keep it alive.
Thanks!
And my apologies. the site is still blocked at work, and by the time I get home, make dinner, do the dishes, etc, I lack the energy to post...

I'll be booking mine today. I'll stay Downtown again, at the Four Queens. I think that's the last hotel Downtown not to have a resort fee.
Unless Plaza has changed they don't. I like the rooms at Plaza and the lobby is nice.Quote: NareedThanks!

I didn't know that. There's also free WiFi in the lobby.
You may understand when I say the earliest I got home last week was 9:30 pm.
Anyway, the Old Kingdom mummies were not very well preserved. They used plaster over the wrappings, too. So these look like statues from the outside, but inside they're piles of bone. I'm not sure if the kings and wealthy of that time used Ka statues. If they didn't, then their attempts at early mummification would not have passed muster with the gods :)

How did you like being in that christianity-saturated organization?
I do note that I am not aware of the Boy Scouts promoting atheism or agnosticism.
Quote: Docreligion-designated awards for Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Maher Baba, and Zoroastrian members (and perhaps others)
The Boy Scouts are more egalitarian now, than they were in the 50's and 60's. But they still frown upon the non-religious.

Switching gears: I can't recall if attendees have the option to wear stick-on name labels at WoVCon so they can be easily recognized by their WoV screen name?

that's a very weird promo. I've only seen that on new slots such as wonder woman this year. is this new or has it been going on for years?

At our very first WoVCon, on 6/15/2011, we first met at the 777 Brew Pub at Main Street Station, but we adjourned and re-convened for poker at Binions. That was one of the two times that I have played poker in the past 37 years. I think that Croupier and maybe his wife were the big winners. I lost a grand total of $10, including tokes.

I'm down. I'd prefer limit over no - limit but would be willing to play either way. Binions or golden nugget would probably be the best places to start a game.
But the Cal only has 2X odds, while its sister-property, MSS, has much higher odds.
I wonder why there is this difference?
