I was about to reply to a thread advertising iPhones, saying something about it being the first spam thread on WOV.

But when I hit the reply button, I was sent to a completely different part of the WOV boards.

Upon investigation, the offending member is still listed as the newest member, and his profile still says he has one post and one topic. But click on it, and a message appears stating the member has not started any threads or made any posts. That explains the reply hiccup.

Obviously, the moderators had deleted the post after I saw it but before I replied.

More important, it was before many people had even seen it.

THAT was damn fast moderating! There's nothing worse than a board that gets bogged down with a lot of spam...

Makes me wonder if that really was the first spam post or not...

Thanks for a job well done - a job that most people even knew was being done!

I saw it, I hit 'flag post'. But... What does that do? I hope it flags it in a negative way to bring it the attention of the moderator. I also gave it 0 stars.

It would be really sweet if a post that was flagged X times was automatically hidden until a moderator could get to it and (dis)approve it. Users could effectively self-moderate the forum

EDIT: I just found the forum rules. That is how it works... cool

that is a pretty smart way to do it!

I have to think that going to such trouble is a big waste of time anyway for the spammer.

Cool, indeed!

And now I see it too.

From the rules page at https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/info/rules/2-forum-rules/:
Quote:

4. This forum is designed to be self-moderating. If you find a post which is spammy, harassing, or illegal in nature, you are encouraged to flag that post as inappropriate. When enough members have flagged a post as inappropriate, it will be automatically removed.

So I guess it's kudos to those of us that flagged the post in question.

And therefore, kudos to JB for designing such a nice feature to these forums!

Indeed!

Here's a little more detail -- if the offending post is in the middle of a thread, then the post will be deleted from the thread, with other posts remaining intact. However, if the offending post is the start of a new thread, then the entire thread will be deleted, even if people have replied to that thread.

Thank you.
