The purpose of this post will be to get a head count. It would also be nice to know who is coming, for any smaller private gatherings. As usual, I'm open to leading a steep and challenging hike at Red Rock, but my expectations are low on any takers.
Quote: DRichI will ABSOLUTELY NOT BE attending any hikes, but I do intend to make it to lunch.
Thanks. Don't forget to vote in the poll as well. The one "yes" vote I know is mine.
Quote: WizardThe 2014 WoV spring fling will be held Saturday, April 26, at the Triple 7 restaurant at the Main Street Station at noon. Like past years, I figure we'll start with about an hour of drinks and gabbing and then get grub around 1:00. We can take it from there regarding post-lunch gambling.

I'll be sure to bring one of my MSS mailers in case the floor person who backed me off tries to kick me out of the restaurant too.
What will you be handing out for party favors?
Quote: NareedWhat will you be handing out for party favors?
I hadn't thought about it. Probably license plates.

Seriously??
Maybe you should do a poll on that.
We can charge you to appear if you'd like. Not sure why, but whatever floats your boat.Quote: EvenBobI only do paid appearances, sorry.

Yup.

Nobody is required to accept them.
Seriously??? WOW!!!! He shouldn't be expected to hand out anything. Ya, ya I know you will say you were joking. Im not even the one giving things out and im insulted. I was thinking about bringing some over priced cigars, obsolete casino chips/coins with along some other things, I may rethink that if people are that ungrateful. There is nothing worst then someone taking something with a mile, meanwhile they are thinking, what a cheap ass this is dumb.Quote: NareedSeriously??

Or something homemade/similar.
Quote: ahiromuI would like to check yes, but I probably won't know for sure until the first week of April. I have to make it to Vegas at the beginning of August for the Star Trek convention, so I'd have to guarantee myself that I can work both in. Need to get Q to sign a Q judge costume.

Please tell me you board the plane in that costume.

No, I will say in the last two editions of WoVCon, which I organized, I handed out party favors. In my case I chose Mexican candy for both occasions. I figured it would be unusual enough to be appreciated as a novelty, while also being light enough for anyone to carry, and nice to either consume right then or bring home.
Actually for the second one I wanted to hand out small handicrafts, but I found none which didn't look cheap. Bigger pieces would have been more of a hardship to carry. Besides tastes vary a great deal, and the first time the candy went over very well. So I settled again for candy, varying the mix a bit.
You know, I would appreciate it if you would stop trying to grab all the attention in these threads, which are about WoVCon and not about how best to attack Nareed. Are you even planning to attend?

Is that a violation of the enhanced profanity rule? (she asked in all innocence)

Hey, it's your choice.
IMO party favors should have something to do with the person giving them, at least for meets like WoVCon. License plates definitely have something to do with you, and every regular on the site should know it. So that's a point in your favor.

Is it not also an insult?
I am fairly certain it is fine. I would assume the PG or profanity rule would be the same as the seven words you can never say on television. especially since I didn't call anyone that. I was only saying someone might think im one.Quote: NareedNo, I will say in the last two editions of WoVCon, which I organized, I handed out party favors. I'm sure people appreciated your gifts. and it was a nice gesture. I'm not sure it should be a requirement for anyone organizing the event.

I definitely appreciated the candy. Especially the cocoa flavored hockey-puck shaped confection (it tastes about 100 times better than that makes it sound...). And I don't know that gifts are necessary. But, if they're to be given, forethought would seem to be prudent.
Something has always bothered me about the 7 words you can't say on television. If I can't say fornicator, of course I can't say motherfornicator. Motherfornicator contains fornicator. Either that's 6 words, or a replacement 7th word should be nominated.

It's called Alegría de Chocolate, which translates as Chocolate Joy. it's made of lightly roasted amaranth seeds mixed with chocolate. The traditional Alegrías are made with agave honey, though these days they're mostly done with high-fructose corn syrup (marketed more palatably as "Maize Honey.")

It may be only four years old, but that's like 400 years in internet time ;) Anyway, traditions have been built up around it: lunch, trivia contest, gaming afterwards, party favors.
Maybe the Wizard can add somethign else of his own, too.

I would much rather get a license plate than either of those

If I could throw in a suggestion and it isn't even really a suggestion because I'm only going to the September meet up but I merely wanted to express the joy these cookies bring to me and perhaps Nareed has more access to them than we do in the States, are "Havana Alvagores", with Dulce de leche.........
Like an angel came down from heaven and pee'd on my tongue :)

I agree, though I went in a different order, I deliberately followed the general model for WoV East/Midwest/Appalachia.
We will arrive in town mid-day on Tuesday 4/22 and depart very late at night on Monday 4/28. We are, as usual, open for getting together with others on days/times not covered by the official activities planned by the Wizard.
The details of our travel plans underwent a sudden change this evening after today's mail brought yet another offer of two free nights at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas! No, not any kind of reward for my having written a favorable review of their place for this site, just the next edition of the same kind of offer I received before. Unfortunately, the free nights are not available on the weekend. I booked Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the Cosmopolitan and still need to book something for the other four nights. If we stayed at the same place, those four nights would supposedly cost us a total of $1,490, and that just wouldn't fit into my budget for this trip, particularly with other good places being available for at least $1,000 less. There are other interesting things in Las Vegas that $1G could be used for.
I suspect that we will wind up back over at the Rio as we often do, since we like the size of their rooms. I've been fighting their web site trying to get a room booked on one of the several offers they have sent me, but things don't seem to be working right, and I don't have anything set up yet.
As for the Wizard passing out license plates, I can't fault that. I gave one to him the first day we met, just about four years before the upcoming event, and there's even a post/picture here to commemorate that. License plates should be easy to fit into luggage for the trip home, but I just don't know what I would do with such a memento if I had it. I used to save them to use as sheet metal for home repairs, but I haven't used one like that in years. I think I still have a few old ones in the garage.
Quote: KonbuHiking sounds really interesting as well, as long as it's not like Camelback...
If you're referring to the Camelback by Phoenix, what I have in mind is much harder.
Quote: WizardI hadn't thought about it. Probably license plates.
Why not hand out some chippies!?

I know them. They're ok. BTW they're called "Havana AlfaJores." They're made in Argentina. I tried a few several years ago when my younger sister in law traveled to Argentina on business and brought back some. But I've never seen them for sale here.

My Spanish is a little rusty. I first tried them in Argentina. The company is owned by a private family and they refuse to take the company international. Quite strange in this day and age :)
Argentina currently is undergoing reverberations from an obviously arson related fire in which nine firefighters died while international banking records burned about two months after the US Supreme Court ruled they were discoverable in the current litigation concerning Argintina's prior banking "revision". A few weeks ago Argentina defaulted on 2 BB interest payments.
With so much public, banking and tax animosity involved I think it quite wise the company wishes to remain domestic only.
Doc, I will be out there spanning your visit dates, and would enjoy getting together with you and yours (and whoever else). Please keep me in mind. My cell is in your PM's from before.
Quote: EvenBobI only do paid appearances, sorry.
How much would you charge not to appear at a venue ? That would seem to be financially better for you in most cases.
Quote: AcesAndEightsI really want to do a challenging hike just because I enjoy hiking and I think I would be up for it. But, there are only so many hours in a Vegas trip to collect that EV. On the other hand, my fiance would probably enjoy it. Hmmmm.
Easy for me to say: make the time.
At least consider making the time. From what you say, it would be a good life EV decision, even though you know in advance you'll wind up beyond exhausted one day.

I'm hoping to get some detailed parameters about the hike from the Wiz to make my decision. You're probably right about the life EV though :)

Naturally.

I'm always right. Except on those occasions when I'm not. ;)
Quote: WizardAs usual, I'm open to leading a steep and challenging hike at Red Rock, but my expectations are low on any takers.
Okay fellow WoV Spring Fling 2014 goers, I am hereby throwing down the gauntlet! Let's take up the Wizard on his hike. Don't let me pressure you into doing something out of your comfort zone, but if you are into hiking and physically capable of a challenging hike, you should come! My fiance may or may not come along, depending on how bored of laying by the pool she is.
Since the trailhead is about 30 minutes away from the strip, I will volunteer to rent a car and schlep any other forum members along to the Red Rock area and back. Please let me know via a post here or PM if you are interested so I can get a head count.
So, all that being said, what day and time would be preferable for the hike? I need to look at rental car prices, as hopefully I can get away with only having one for part of the trip. I would suggest Sunday morning (we do want to start early to beat the heat, right?) since the main meetup is on Saturday, but obviously it depends on the Wizard's availability.
This hike is physically challenging. This is not something one should undertake if you're not in good cardiovascular shape. About half of adults I take on this hike get winded and have to turn back early.
If we do this hike I would recommend either Friday or Sunday. If we do it after the lunch on Saturday we may run out of daylight, assuming we start around 3:00. I'm available both days.
If you would like a second opinion on this hike, Rudeboyoi has done it also.
I think it would make for a great photo to get a good-sized group on the summit.
Quote: WizardThe hike I have in mind is Kraft Mountain. It is about 4-5 miles round trip and definitely involves some easy scrambling. In other words, you will use your hands in spots. We will be going up and down the "easy way." The standard route you see discussed online is shorter and steeper.
what do you mean by the "easy-way"? i think its easier going up the face and coming down the main trail. than up and down the main trail.
its pretty cool when you reach the summit. you can see the strip in the distance. theres also this big sandpit near the top i call the beach.
Quote: rudeboyoiwhat do you mean by the "easy-way"? i think its easier going up the face and coming down the main trail. than up and down the main trail.
I meant the "main trail" both directions. I like the main face better too, but I think it might scare some members off.

Oh boy this makes me nervous. I'd hate to duck out early but I don't want to pass out neither lol.

I highly recommend this. Doc is gifted with a camera.

Come on dj, you can do it. Just start sprinting between casinos starting tomorrow, and you'll be in perfect shape by April.
