There shouldn't be any reason to worry about parking fees during winter with no sports teams in season.
More important, I prefer the casino that will bring the most members.
I'll probably spend the night in the Pittsburgh area, and drive (3+ hrs) home the following day.
Quote: KeyserSozeI haven't voted yet. But I think Rivers might be best suited for an event like this.

I live less than 4 miles from Rivers casino and I do not go there for the following reasons.
1. Table limits especially on a Saturday are generally $10 or higher.
2. 85% of their black jack tables use CSMs.
3. There is usually only 1 table of $10 using a shoe instead of CSMs
4. they use 8 deck shoes opposed to Meadows using 6 deck
5. The tables are about 18 inches away from each other. If you are sitting in 3rd base you will almost always bump into the 1st base of the table behind you.
6. very smokey
7. I have never once been comped an alcoholic drink at the rivers and you can get free drinks at the Meadows playing a $5 table
Maybe for a meet up none of that matters but those are just a few of the reasons that I drive out of my way to go to the meadows. There are some benefits to the Rivers as well but my negatives out weigh those.
I have been to The Meadows many times, and I have nothing bad to say about the place. I'm cool with any location, even Mountaineer.
By the way, I was at Mountaineer a few days ago- it was the same as always. A toothless Hillbilly wanted to kick my ass for hitting A7.

I think we should address the parking situation in particular, making sure we don't get gouged.
btw, at a racetrack once, it crossed my mind that the people collecting some of the parking charges were pulling a scam.
We would not pay for parking at any of the four, on that date. Mountaineer is probably slightly smokier than Wheeling Island, Wheeling Island has a newish ventilation system, so not as bad as it used to be. Meadows and Rivers are definitely less smoky than either of those two, but I haven't been to Rivers enough to really say which is the least smoky. If you made me call it, I'd say Rivers.

And, their Free Play sucks.
My vote would have been for Wheeling Island because it is the closest to me, and we could caravan to one of the good Italian restaurants around here, because WI's buffet isn't that great. I want Mosca to go, so I voted Rivers.
If Mosca is good with Meadows, since it is so close, I'd change my vote to Meadows in a heartbeat, even though it'd be a pain in the ass to eat anywhere except for Meadows if we go there.
In terms of desire, Rivers and Mountaineer are otherwise tied for worst, in my book, so it'd be a coin-flip. I'd even choose Mountaineer if anyone was interested in playing poker. $2/$4 Limit Game, free Guinness!
Quote: RaleighCrapsDo any of the casinos offer free drinks while gambling ?
non alcoholic all of them
alcoholic, none of them.
At the meadows you can ask the floor for a drink coupon which is good for a small well drink or a beer. Possibly a glass of wine. Sometimes you ask them for one and they say they don't have any and are waiting for more to come. I am guessing the floor person is given X amount and once they are gone they are gone until X time. I can't speak for the west virginia casinos as I have not been to those in about 3 years but 3 years ago it was a no.
Quote: RaleighCrapsDo any of the casinos offer free drinks while gambling ?
You can usually get free beers (including Guinness) at Mountaineer if you are playing poker, except I just called and they said they don't do that. The Craps Odds are 10x now, which is surprising.
The Mountaineer used to offer free drinks if you are playing poker, but I just called and they said they don't.
Mountaineer: High-Limit Room ($50+ bettor, Mini-Baccarat, Blackjack)
Wheeling Island: Betting $100+, no free drinks for slots, except high-limit room, ($5+ machines only) must be actively playing.
Rivers: The guy wouldn't transfer me to Tables stating that he could address all of my concerns. Eventually, he said, "Listen, there's a procedure, you get your Player's Club card, you come in, you play, you see if you get drinks or not. There's no amount to bet where you get drinks, the casino hosts will address that when you are here."
---Typical Rivers customer service...$*$^&*hole.
Meadows: $25 Average Bet, or coupon system outlined above...though I didn't know anything about that. I could have swore I got free drinks there once betting Craps at $10/PL, in fact, I know I did.
Honestly, other than for being aesthetically appealing and close to some really good bars/restaurants, Rivers absolutely sucks, in my opinion. The Free Play offers are worse than everywhere except Mountaineer, the Tables are generally a pretty bad gamble for BJ, they can't justify their Table Minimums half the time and the customer service is God-awful from top to bottom.
Again, I voted for Rivers because Mosca suggested he's only in if we do it there. If he says he'll go to Meadows, I'll switch my vote to Meadows.
I'll be looking forward to meeting all of you guys, but I'm not even going to play anything if we go there, positive expectation, negative expectation, don't care. I refuse to even risk the possibility of losing any of my money to these @$$holes, I hate them.
MEADOWS:
Meadows' Table Minimums on Craps will most assuredly be around $5 on a Sunday, the customer service there is pretty good, the Free Play offers are the second best (Wheeling Island) it's not as aesthetically appealing as Rivers, but nicer than Mountaineer or Wheeling Island. The only problem is location, really, if we go there we'd pretty much have to eat there or take vehicles and cross the PITA highway over to the outlet mall place and I don't know what else is around in terms of restaurants.
Anyone eat at Meadows buffet, interested in what anyone thinks of it. I could maybe call and see if they'd do a group discount, they might play ball. It's not THAT busy there...
They have a small one during steeler games but thats all that I am aware of.

Do they not have a buffet? I kind of assumed they did, never looked for one, wouldn't normally eat at a local casino, what casino doesn't have a buffet? Do they have a restaurant, then? Maybe I can get us a group discount at the restaurant.
Quote: odiousgambitwow!
I didn't like them before that, but the dude on that call just gave me the typical Rivers Customer Service is our DEAD LAST priority attitude, and that sealed it. I know there's someone at Tables who can answer the question with, you know, an answer, but that's just the way the customer service is there.
Rivers: 5
Meadows: 3

Dunno if it's scary how well you know me, or sad how predictable I am. In any case, I'm officially out. I'll be leaving for the Caribbean for a fishing trip on 3/1 =(
I guess Mosca nailed it =p
Anyways, have fun and someone do a report. I really hope to make a WoVCon East one of these days =/

The current vote is 5-4 in favor of Rivers. I'm going to leave voting open until January 15th to give everyone enough time to see this thread, of course, people don't necessarily have to announce they are coming by then, but I'd like us to have a solid casino plan by then so we can then work on eats.
He got as far as Wheeling before he got homesick, called Big Murray, and turned around. He should be in his 50's now. Last I heard serving 2nd term for armed robbery.
Had no thought about Wheeling for years. Once called chamber of commerce but they did not know how Wheeling West Virginia got it's name. DO YOU ?
What I don't know is the claim that it loosely translates to, "Head on a pike," or, "Place of the head." Allegedly, anytime the Indians would capture settlers being in their area, they would behead them and put their heads on a pike near the shore as a warning to other settlers passing by. In my opinion, that's probably not true, but I've heard the claim more than once.
In my personal opinion, Wheeling is far more likely an Iroquois word translating to, "City that absolutely sucks."
Quote: Mission146"City that absolutely sucks."

on another matter, I have decided to vote, and that vote will be for Meadows. You can also now deem me fully intending to come.
Quote: onenickelmiracleThe reason I voted for Meadows is because I didn't think it is fair for Mission to have to travel so far as the organizer and not fair for us to go to Wheeling.
It's not fair for anyone to go to Wheeling.
I appreciate the sentiment, but the difference between Pittsburgh and Washington is immaterial. If you would prefer Rivers, definitely vote that way.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,388, and the median income for a family was $38,708. Males had a median income of $30,750 versus $22,099 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,923. About 13.1% of families and 18.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.3% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
Quote: BuzzardOff topic but Wheeling West Virginia is where I lost my nephew Little Murray. Or rather he lost himself. He had stayed with me and Josie one summer in Denver as a teenager. Once back in Baltimore he got a job, married , and had a baby. Then his wife got bored with married life and moved in with the jerk next door. Little Murray was 20 then and asked if he could come stay with us a while.
He got as far as Wheeling before he got homesick, called Big Murray, and turned around. He should be in his 50's now. Last I heard serving 2nd term for armed robbery.
This is a really terrible story, Buzz. So sorry to hear it.

They've had Table Games since 12/2007 and they've had slots much longer. I can't pin an exact date on the slots, but I want to say Mid-90's. I remember you used to be able to go play the slots when you were eighteen years old, back in 2002.
Anyway, the area's economy sucked prior to the slots coming to town and continued to suck after. It sucked prior to table games being legalized and continued to suck after. We have the natural gas drilling, which is really good for hotels/restaurants and creates some poorly paid jobs, so the area is still mainly poorly paid jobs, just more of them. A handful of people got rich because they had mineral rights to their properties, however, mineral rights were often retained in property sales, even those greater than a century ago, so many people with the mineral rights are long out of the area.
The pipeline crews are mostly comprised of people from Out-of-area, so most of the money they make leaves the area. Can't really blame the companies, though, training costs, the out-of-state guys have been travelling around and doing this for years. I would assume that if it cost more to pay for those guys to travel and stay in hotels as opposed to training local people, they would train local people, they don't, so bringing in out-of-area people must be more cost efficient.
Abstractors and Landmen are doing okay, and some of them are local, at least, more local. We have people doing that from other States, like Texas, but they are, at least half (I'm guessing) from Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio.
After the drilling is over, everything will go back to royally sucking around here, except it will actually be a little worse for hotels because you'll have a market completely flooded with a bunch of empty rooms. For any hotel that has its mortgage paid off prior to the drilling ending, though, they should be fine...so hopefully they're using the money that way. If any of the new properties that just went up in the last one-two years (and ones going up, presently) don't have all of their stuff paid off by then, they'll probably be up the creek without a paddle.
I guess I didn't answer the question. I'm unqualified to say anything about the slots, and the Tables didn't make a difference, either way. They could have, though still probably not, but PA followed in 2010 and Ohio more recently, so WV didn't have it to themselves in this area for very long.
Little Murray had a sister named Mary Francis. Very popular name for a baby girl in the 60's. Last saw her in 1980 as Josie , me and 2 daughters were going to the airport. Hot summer day, she was 14, hopping from one bare foot to the other ( hot asphalt) as she said
goodbye to Josie through the rolled down car window. Dead at 34, drug overdose.
Hey, back to Wheeling or anything less morbid. Sorry for the intrusion.

They used to have an outdoor buffet near the racetrack but I think that is only in the summer. It is also small similar to a wedding buffet. They have 2 restaurants. 1 is a casual cafe. Food is half decent, we have eaten there quite a few times. They also have a steakhouse. I have never eaten there but I assume it is expensive.
Just curious if anyone is bringing wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/f buddy?
Someone earlier mentioned that if we went to wheeling we could play 2/4. If we have enough people who want to play poker I am sure the meadows would give us a dedicated table or 2 and would spread anything we want. I think it would be fun to get a low level mixed game going. Something like LHE, NLHE, PLO, O8 or maybe just 2/4 limit HE and 2/4 O8 with half kill.
Quote: GWAEMission, you can also change me to a definitely yes.
Something like LHE, NLHE, PLO, O8 or maybe just 2/4 limit HE and 2/4 O8 with half kill.
Even though I don't understand half of those abbreviations, I think the title of "Wizard of Vegas Poker Champion, Depressed Appalachian Region" has a nice ring to it. Maybe even an autographed book from the Wizard himself to inaugerate the champion ?
Quote: Mission146Maybe we could, I don't know, Mountaineer is the one that usually has 2/4 Limit, but in checking Bravo Poker Live, Meadows and Rivers seem to usually have it, as well. If Wheeling Island doesn't have the game already going, they probably wouldn't have a dealer to deal the game, so that would be the worst place to do that.
meadows used to run a 2/4 all of the time but they have since changed it to 3/6. However, if someone wants 2/4 they would run it. There is almost always extra dealers and if we knew ahead of time then they would have one or two for us. The rivers only has 4/8 and that game has pretty much dried up.

The 4/8 limit at rivers runs nearly every Friday night. Frequently 2 tables. It rarely runs otherwise.

No, man, you're in the clear! You'd know if you had such a girlfriend. For most people, it was a question of whether or not the friends would find her attractive, in my case, it was a girl of questionable mental sanity that I would just as soon my friends not know about, did some time in juvy, the whole nine...but man, was she smoking!

I'll entertain side bet ideas, too, but this will be the only award from me.
