Quote: FaceWas -25*F this morning. Not wind chill, actual temp.
It's be so much nicer if we could just bottle it and save for the summer.
Quote: rxwineIt's be so much nicer if we could just bottle it and save for the summer.
Dunno what you'd do with it. Bottle would probably shatter.
I was wrong on that last post. -25* was windchill; it was -2* actual. Now it's -16* actual with a windchill of -40*. The high of the day was -2*, which we had at midnight lol. The snow on the fields have steam rising off it as if it was open water. There's a weird haze in the air and every light has a halo around it.
It's so cold I have nothing to do but talk about how cold it is. Well, that and fix my furnace, which has failed twice in the last 24hrs.

It was 5 below when I took the dog out
an hour ago. His yellow snow froze almost
immediately. I know the furnace is working
because it almost never shuts off. Found
air coming in around a window frame, felt
like a cold razor on my hand.

Play-Doh. Cheap and easy to stuff gaps around windows or unused doors.
I can't believe it, but I actually thought ahead and replaced my door seals this summer. Like, June/July summer, not "crap it's cold I should do that" December. The difference is definitely noticeable.
Does that make me an adult? =)
I have had some good days between -10 and 10 above. Great wood cutting weather. Don't even have to wear much if you keep moving, especially after all the moisture is frozen out of the air.Quote: FaceDunno what you'd do with it. Bottle would probably shatter.

Is that what the steam is? Moisture or humidity escaping? Sounds like the crap that will build on your windshield faster than you can remove it, the kind that builds up on the wiper blades. I use to roll the window down and reach out and snap the wiper blade at the high point of its sweep like a teenager and a bra strap. Great times.
That halo around the lights might be cataracts. j/k You may need a glaucoma prevention remedy? Remember, weed will last you through times of no money better than money, will last you through times of no weed. [unknown]
The temp gauge here in the shade bumped 90 today and I got in the pool for a little while. I think they just ran one of those 250 races. Either Vegas or Parker? Its about time for "the Baja", but then again it is almost time for the Iditarod sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome. 1049 miles there abouts. They may have to move the start again do to lack of snow.

Yeah but is the water still running over the falls or is it a block of ice?

last week, over by the side of the falls where the ice was frozen, a rock climber climbed all the way up.

To put that temperature into its proper perspective, antifreeze freezes at about -35. Although it is fun to create the instant snow by throwing a pot of boiling water into the air outside

Geez, I rode a motorcycle at 13F at 50mph once and that's only a wind chill of -12.

Quote: BoulderDamItFrom what I understand, the Santa Ana's are coming in tomorrow, so we should he hitting the 80's in the Inland areas.
It should be lovely for guys like you down by the beach.
Yep the Santa Ana winds blew into town and temps hit low 80's along the coast. It was incredible. Here's a shot of La Jolla on Friday.
Hope you got the chance to fully enjoy it.
The news showed many of pretty ladies down at Mission in bikinis. The water must be pretty cold, but the sunning is nice.
A guy had to be air lifted off of Cowles Mt. because of dehydration.

Is it time to start dressing in layers yet? :-) Minus 13 degrees a little to your east.
I'm leaving that picture of La Jolla up on my screen.

Can you tell the difference between -20 and -31? When I lived in either Ohio or Iowa I remember -19, but nothing worse than that.

Man. We hit -11* last night, and the hot water pipes froze along with one drain, in one of the bathtubs. I have heat tape on some of the pipes coming from the water meter, but it looks like I need to get it on the one coming out of the water heater now. About 1' up from the top of the tank there's a lot of splits, it looks like a twisted menorah, that's where I focused the heat gun to thaw everything, that's what I'll wrap with the heat tape.

It burns us, precious.
I've played hockey outside at -5. Soaking wet, but of course was active. Had no problem stripping down to skin to cool/dry off.
When I went outside yesterday at -16, you can tell the difference. Hard to breathe, and the layers don't seem to be as effective. Also your eyeballs cloud over, almost as if they're freezing.
At -30, like I said, house was popping so loud I thought the roof might come down. The walls near windows are frighteningly cold, and I don't have a draft. I actually smoked in my basement for the first time in 12 years, as even the garage was just too bitter to be in.
Of course, I don't really have the gear for it. WNY winters are all about the snow. Even single digits are somewhat rare, so I'm only geared to about 0*F. -30 is out of my league, and my truck is none too happy either.

My house was built in 1854, it's popping
days are long over. The outside walls are
very cold, it's like a beast is out there

No, it was just those two days that dipped to -20 to -30. Once thoe passed the house returned to its peaceful state.
It's +11 now and dropping fast. Says low of -9 for tomorrow, which, yes, mean more -30's for me. And my heater still keeps conking out, requiring attention two to six times a day. I just hope it doesn't go while I'm sleeping. Been lucking out so far.
Quote: beachbumbabsThis picture really caught my eye this morning. Taken yesterday; courtesy of Time magazine. Anybody recognize where it is?
Niagara Falls, of course. You should see it when they light it up.
Looks like a pattern change coming around the end of this month which means hopefully more storms for CA and warmer temps for the Midwest and northeast.
I'm really hoping that we get a "Miracle March" here in CA to give us some relief from the 3 year drought. We desperately need it!

Nice picture Bob, did you take that? Where was that taken from? I am guessing somewhere around Rocky River.
I've never been ice fishing, at least not proper ice fishing. Last thing I need is yet another sub-set of fishing gear lol. Plus, I suspect I wouldn't have time what with hockey and all, just as my racing killed last year's summer fishing.
I live pretty close to the Niagara Mohawk power plant, and their cooling dumps so much hot water into Chadwick Bay it's always thawed. If I get a midwinter hankerin', I just go there. I doubt I could do it with this year's brutal winter, but I've been out on a boat in both January and February before, trolling the bay for early trout.

Ithaca? No way. About 125 miles dead west of there. The plant is 35mi south of Buffalo, in Dunkirk.
He's talking about NRG Dunkirk, which is south of Buffalo. It hasn't been Niagara Mohawk for a while. Actually, it switched over from coal-fired to natural gas fired recently. That's why I know about it.Quote: EvenBobI thought you lived near Ithaca. Isn't the plant

Yes, that. I was wondering where the huge piles of coal went to.

Other than a stint in college and a year and a half a few towns over, I've lived here my whole life. T'was about 45 minutes to the Salamanca casino, an hour and five to the Falls. I guess I'm used to it, as there is nowhere in my immediate area to shop and or work. If you do anything, it requires a drive.
I'm about 10-15 minutes from the shore, if I go straight there. 30 or so if I go down to Dunkirk. I'm totally spoiled and it makes house hunting a bitch, as I don't want to give up the easy access to prime fishing =/
