Anyone see the show Lookout on ABC, tonight? There was a segment on Vegas rip-offs. Opened with two parties departing the airport for the Wynn at the same time. Party 1, said nothing and was taken through the tunnel and highway at a cost of over $30. Party 2 gave specific directions, Swenson to Paradise to Sands road. Party 2 paid $18 and arrived 10 minutes earlier. Lol

They also talked about how none of the major national type banks have ATM's on the strip, the closest being a mile away, while all strip ATM's have fees of between $3.50 and $5.99. Sad.

I was the victim of a pretty bad longhaul: Caeser's Palace to the airport, like $37. I knew something was up when we turned right on Flamingo to the highway but I was up for 30+ hours on FPDW trying to hit a royal so it got kinda blurry.

If you don't have a car and you're staying on the strip then ATM fees will bite you in the ass. $3.50 seems like a decent price for a non-bank atm though. One sad story I've seen was when I was playing blackjack and 2 ladies kept buying in for $20 at a time, then running off to the ATM when they broke. The juice would be a huge amount if they are taking $20 at a time. Didn't help they would split tens against a ten.... but I digress.

I believe there's a BoA ATM just north of the MGM, upstairs in that little Coca Cola tourist trap center.

One would think that somebody would put in a "Money Store" on the strip, betweeen PH and MGM for example.

A venue to wire and receive funds, and an ATM with a low fee: what else?

I can't see them cashing checks: too risky.

I bet that probably isn't allowed (although I could be wrong, of course). For example, I once had a friend who wanted to lease a place so she could open a coffee shop, but she couldn't because there was a Starbucks within a certain radius.

Ah, but who would be in a legal position to prohibit it?

I can think of no valid reason for a governmental agency to prohibit it.

A private owner (unless the owner is a casino or has close ties to one) would presumably only care about the amount of rent received: why would they care whether their tenant is a Money Store or a trinket and bauble vendor?

The casinos would presumably oppose it, as it would impact the action they get on their ATMs in the casinos.

Curious.

BOA is in the Caesar's Forum Shops and in the M&M store (around MGM)
Wells Fargo is in the Carnival court at Harrahs.
Chase is inside the CVS pharmacy close to Monte Carlo.
Walgreens just south of PH will have a true bank machine (US Bank, I think)
Fashion Show Mall has a PNC machine, I believe

Whenever I go to Vegas one of my first stops is the Walgreens anyway or the Fashion mall to pick up cheaper water, snacks, and beverage... much cheaper than the mini-bar. You can get cash back from the teller and you can use the bank ATMs.

Ah, so there is a presence.

Didn't know that, as I don't use ATMs.

I wonder why there are no banks?

If they take you out the south end of the airport you are being long hauled. For south strip the shortest route is Tropicana, on the north side of the airport, to Las Vegas Blvd. The strip is northwest of the airport so if you are heading toward the hotel towers you know you are not being long hauled.

There are two ways to get downtown. Paradise to Sahara to Las Vegas Blvd, then downtown. This doesn't save much money because the meter is going up while you are sitting at red lights. The other route is Tropicana west to I-15 then north to downtown. But the drivers have another little long haul technique. They take I-15 north to the Las Vegas Expressway circling north and east around the casino district and exiting on Casino Center Blvd. When all they had to do was exit on Charleston Blvd and take Grand Central Parkway to downtown. You come out on Ogden between the California Club and the Las Vegas Club.

You can file a complaint online. Long haulers are subject to a fine.
