I will be making my bi-annual (every 2 years) trip to vegas later this year, and I wanted to stay somewhere not on the strip. Which of these places would you prefer to stay? Thanks!

I voted GN because I prefer downtown. I think you should also check out Plaza as the value is clearly there. It is a small step down for half the price. If you stay at GN do not stay in the Carson Tower, splurge for the others.

If you pick a Station property then I would stay at Red Rock unless GVR is 1/3 the price. Both are great though, GVR just has more competition.

Depends what YOU are looking for.
If you are not interested in the traffic jams and the strutting swells of the strip then don't go there.
Some go to Tuscany because it is nearby and gives the option of both worlds.
Some go to The M because its seven miles away and fairly new with good food and great booze with easy meal comps. Local women rave about the spa there for some reason.
Sams Town will give you all the bargains and none of the Strip Nonsense.
If you don't mind an occasional language barrier the Eastside Cannery is an overlooked bargain.

I have been to both PALMS and RED ROCK multiple times, but haven't stayed at either yet.

For me, I would lean toward the PALMS, because it is not as far out by itself.

The double-decker buses ran up and down FLAMINGO ST, so if you print out a schedule
from the bus website, $ 2 will get you to the Strip in air conditioned comfort.

I always stay just off the strip at the Platinum. It is non gaming, non smoking and I dont mind paying because the cost is not too bad(Usually aaround $110 a night) It alsoputs me close to two slower paced casino's in the Tuscany and Ellis Island, and also a 5 min walk to the strip if I want that.

I have stayed at the M and after a few days it got old because it is SOOOO far out, and since I was drinking I couldn't just hop in the car, and there was no way I was walking anywhere.

But as someone else said, it depends on what you want.

Staying downtown gives you lots of options to walk to. The Golden Nugget is the best place to stay downtown I think. Good choice.

If you wanted to relax and unwind, The M might be better. Just you're going to be stuck with what they have to play and what's going on. Maybe boring, but I'd say the M would be a second choice for me.

The Palms would be good if you're not playing table games and only videos or if you wanted nicer eye candy.

GOOD LUCK!

I choose the Golden Nugget. I like the idea of being near other casinos as opposed to being at ones that are not close to other casinos. I can get that at home--having to drive or ride between casinos. What the strip and downtown give me is a variety of places to play within easy walking distance.

If I want a change, I just shuffle off to the next place...

I chose the M but it looks like GN is going to win. If you're going to stay on Fremont, then I would suggest El Cortez. You can walk to everything else downtown from there and the odds are more favorable to the gambler.

(What? No love for Sam's Town or East Side Cannery?)

Wow, I'm pretty shocked that the GN has this many votes! If I told you that going to other casinos while I'm there isn't a high priority, would that change your vote? I would be going with my wife who is not that big of a gambler, she is probably more concerned with the room quality, pool & spa, and having nice cocktail lounge.....from the website, though, the GN looks like it satisfies those characteristics. How about the hold percentages of VP and slots at the GN? Have they increased them to pay for the major renovation? I want my gambling dollar to go farther....

Your gambling dollar will go farther downtown than on the strip but maybe not as much so at the Golden Nugget. I'm not a fan of the place but it is where I would choose based on my criteria and the choices given...

With the further definition of your criteria, I would have to abstain. I don't know enough about non-gambling stuff and those other locations to have an opinion worth even 2 cents (some say it is never worth that much). I just like having lots of gambling choices in easy walking distance.

So besides the GN, why are most people saying the M over GVR or RR? Because it's newer? Because the gambling experience is better there?

M has great standard rooms, great spa(according to my wife) and a fantastic lounge area. Plus when I stayed I would say they had the hottest cocktail waitresses in LV. It may have changed but man what a view. ANd the pool was ok when I was there, a little cold so not much going on.

How is the player's club program there compared to the stations casinos? M is Penn National right? Are they a little less stingy with comps?

When I was there it wasnt Penn Nat. yet. SO I cannot comment on current comps, but before then I felt the comps were generous. For instance I was playing $5 craps one night and the the pit wrote me a comp for a free dinner at the steak house, easily a $200 meal, and my play did not warrant that kind of comp.

The M resort is generally thought to be generous with comps and to be most particularly generous Monday thru Thursday. The buffet does tend to get a long line but if you play a bit before going there its fairly easy to get a comp to it.

I think any of those would be good. I've warmed up to the Golden Nugget recently. I think they offer great value. It's basically a Strip-quality resort without Strip prices, plus the convenience of downtown. I heartily endorse them. The Palms has almost certainly decreased in quality since the Maloof's got shut out, but it is still a nice place. I think they have, or are currently, renovating the Palms tower rooms.

So how would you rate their player's club? Better than Stations or Penn with comps and hotel room offers? How are the cocktail servers at the GN? I'm assuming they aren't as "good" as GVR or M, right?

Pretty good. They comp well and have great bounceback offers. Stations is good, too -- one of the best. I really don't know enough to comment on Penn's. (If it's anything like their regional properties, though, it's horrible).

Their cocktail servers are fine. I don't think I've actually ever ordered a drink there, but they aren't bad. Certainly better than Las Vegas Club or Binion's across the street.

a hike and a half, I need a nap just walking to my room.

I see that the GN website says that they have new "gold club" rush rooms with VIP amenities....do the "gold club" rooms just mean they are located on the top floors of the rush tower? It also says that you get "VIP" check-in....I hope that means you get a cocktail while you wait in line....

I think the Gold Club rooms are newly remodeled in the RUSH Tower and on upper floors.

If I remember correctly, there is a small VIP room off the RUSH Tower Lobby for check-in. You'll get to sit and relax, some nuts and a cold bottle of water. Maybe a cool towel to wipe your face.

We always get a corner junior suite with a King bed. HUGH Bathroom, Large sitting area, K cup machine, Digital safe, 2 Flat Screen TV's. Real Nice! And the price is right.

I'm thinking of getting a Cabana for the day by the pools when we go next month. It's really the ONLY swimmable pool Downtown.

And the walk to the Casino from your room is considerably shorter than any strip hotel. It is a further walk than any other Downtown place.

Since it's owned by the the Landry Restaurant Group out of Houston, the in house food selection is pretty good, especially for Downtown.
I don't know everything but I know a lot.

For low stakes gambling, attractive games, and great room value... I like the El Cortez Cabana suites. My girlfriend loves the nearby bars, Downtown Cocktail Room, Commonwealth, The Park, etc, so it's fun to stay there for a day or two after some Strip time.

Man, I just checked the VP Free website, and the GN's selection of good VP is horrible for downtown! I might have to head to the GVR now because they have a ton of 100+ pay tables with low starting denoms...

BTW, how come the El Cortez doesn't have a pool? Don't they occupy enough real estate over there that one could have been added?

One of its few downsides. They do have a large selection of 99.17% Bonus Poker, which is better than the Strip, but like you said, poor for downtown. I do think it is about right for the quality of property they are. GVR is certainly better for VP.

I only play the 8/5 BP @ the $0.25 cent level when I'm there(GN).

Better choices are available within a few minute walk to the 4 Queen's or the Cal or the MSS.

That would have changed my vote; I like walking to a variety of casinos so I picked the only one that was in a group (Downtown). If that's not important to you then you have my permission to ignore my vote :)

Well, I checked the hotel room prices for all of them, and actually the GN is where you get the most room for the price....I guess that makes up for the lousy selection of VP machines....I bet the slots hold percentages still aren't as bad as the strip....right?
