I have seen quotes online for rates higher than the stated maximum rates for certain casino/hotels. What happens if they do this? Is the rate just reduced to the maximum or do you wind up not having to pay for it? I am referring to the rate cards on the hotel doors and these high rates are usually times like NYE.

Are these rates quoted directly by the hotel or through a 3rd party site (like Orbitz, Expedia, etc)? If via a 3rd party I think it's allowed because they get it cheaper than they charge you.

Totalrewards site. They may have been offered at times they had their so-called up to 40% off sales, but possibly not. I might guess they would be sure to place you in a room with a higher rate card.

The only way you would get a free night out of that is if you bring it to the hotel's attention and they refuse to reduce it to the Maximum Rate on the rate card. This also only applies if you book through them, and make sure that you're not including taxes/fees as the rate card on the door has nothing to do with taxes/fees.

If your actual base rate is higher than the rate card, though, then you would just want to complain to the desk and have it reduced to the maximum rate. If they refuse to do that, then you would probably want to complain to the better business bureau, or dispute the charges with your credit card company. If you book through some third-party website, who adds their fees in but just advertizes it as part of the rate, that's irrelevant. I would think the TR site would be considered booking directly, though.

My solution? The amount on my rate cards is so stupidly high that nobody would ever pay that much, even after tax.

Thanks Mission. All pretty much what I thought, but wasn't sure. I have heard about the inflated room rates listed like you mentioned.
