I remember a thread from a long time ago talking about prepaying the commission for pai gow- but I'm still not understanding how it benefits the player.

It doesn't make a lot of difference. You can bet $21 and win $20. Or you can bet $20 and win $19. You get no commission on 5% of your bet. It also speeds things up.

That is my understanding- but I could have sworn someone said that it somehow made a tiny benefit to the player who pre-paid.

Maybe you could explain a little more of what you don't understand, Malaru. You're making a higher value bet for the same commission... so less commission per dollar bet.
It's the same thing as betting 10 to win 9 as compared to betting 20 to win 19.

In the casual gambler's grand scheme of things, it makes little difference.
When paying the commission afterwards, you collect $19 for your $20 bet. So the commission is $1/$20 = 5%
When paying the commission first, you collect $20 for your $21 bet. The commission is $1/$21 = 4.76%
Like I said, little difference.
