Hi

I have a chart, and it has a weird rule in it. It tells you to surrender 17 against Dealers A or Hit if not allowed.

Also it tells you to surrender 16 against dealers 9. Never seen those rules on any other chart, regardless of rules or nr of decks.

What BJ rules would warrant a rule like that? Is this a matter of decks used? Or plain BS?

According to this calculator:

Surrendering has a flat expectation of -50.00, logical, but no matter what crazy rules you have never, is the expactancy worse if you have 17 against dealers A or 16 against dealer 9.

Or am i missing something?

If i understand correctly, if your expectancy is say, -51.00 you should surrender, if possible correct?

Those charts are basic strategy. You surrender 17 vs. A on a H17 game (where dealer hits soft 17), although you stand if not allowed.
Surrender 16 vs. 9 is basic strategy in a shoe game (i.e. more than 2 decks) for both S17 and H17.

Yes, the EV of surrender is -0.5. And yes, you do it because any other option is worse. It's about "losing less".

There actually may be an index for hitting a hard 17 against an ace in single or double deck games. I don't know what it might be but the count would be so negative that most would have made their exit before then.

i see now, surrendering on 17 is fairly common. surrendering against 9 only for 2 or more decks.

Am i working the calculator correctly? I give my own cards, then remove my cards and dealers card from the shoe?
