Quote: IbeatyouracesWe walked by there October 2013 and it looked deserted.
That just means that they were open lol. Last time I was there, I think me and buddy spent 30-40 minutes in there and maybe 1-2 people walked in in that time.
Quote: WizardSomebody correct me if I'm wrong, which I often am, but I thought that place got sold and the contents moved to some new store on Tropicana.
The Gamblers Book Shop was next to the Pinball Hall of Fame, on the westbound side of Tropicana between Maryland and Spencer, at one time, but I am under the impression that it has closed and its merchandise moved into the GGS store on Main; this is what it says on the "Gamblers Book Club" website. The store is marked as closed on Google Maps, and the street view no longer shows it as there. Wikipedia listed another address, on Eastern near Russell, but it doesn't appear to be there either.
Quote: DocThings I see that we now need to work on are: (1) Finding someone to take charge of organizing this shindig, since no volunteer has yet stepped forward....
Quote: WizardI'd like to motion that we set 5:00 as the trickle-in time and 6:00 as the target to start ordering food. If this is agreeable I can put in a reservation.
Put in a reservation? Aha! It looks as if the man behind the curtain has stepped forward as the volunteer-in-charge! With that in mind, I endorse the 5:00 trickle in and 6:00 order food plan. The two people that I previously thought might need a later start time were GWAE (who now says he can't make it at all) and PokerGrinder, with whom I appear to have had miscommunications about Friday night plans versus Saturday night plans.
Clarification on the planned schedule for the 2016 Spring Fling Main Event:
Date: Saturday, April 16, 2016
Location: 777 Brew Pub at Main Street Station
Trickle-in Arrivals: 5:00 p.m. PDT
Order Food: 6:00 p.m. PDT
If someone plans to attend the Spring Fling and has a problem with this schedule, please let us all know ASAP so we can make adjustments as necessary.
That leaves the question of gaming activities, with Craps and Poker being the leading contenders in the voting. It is obvious that there are differing preferences. I have noticed no responses at all to my tentative suggestion of two gaming sessions, one prior to dinner and one afterward, as opposed to possibly having the members of the group split up and head the direction of their own interests. Does anyone want to comment on the two-session concept? If not, I'll just trash the notion and let things drift as to what we should do in the line of gaming.
For those who prefer poker, which of the downtown casinos other than Binion's (where we played as a group years ago) has a suitable facility for this? I know nothing myself about the poker rooms. I am also a bit concerned that there might be some significant disparity in the types of poker games that folks would want to play -- low-stakes limit vs. higher stakes no-limit.
I have previously suggested MSS and California as candidates for craps, though there are quite a few other possibilities available in the area.
Do we need a third poll to help clarify the preferences?
Still not sure of my travel arrangements, but would enjoy hanging with others during time out there, and will let you all know. I see the Wizard says he'll make a 777 reservation, which is great; I didn't want to volunteer until I knew I was coming.

I am fine for anytime on Saturday, I mentioned I would rather a later meet up when we were talking about the Friday get together.
Very StrangeQuote: Romes
I have this really weird desire to have us all meet up at the Bellagio water fountains and that kick off the event. For me personally, I think the nighttime shoes are literally the best free thing in Vegas. Kind of like Oceans 11, but with real gamblers and AP's =P..
You buy Boarshead meats online? I'm assuming you are not Islamic. And they heliver? And you admitted to 'heing' a 'semi regular'? That's a pretty significant statement, congrats to you! Or was that just when you were hiding in your huilding? ....;-) and you get coupons? I need to move....;-)Quote: MaxPenMost of the Gamblers General store revenue comes from online business. They did insert a deli for breakfast and lunch. One of the best subs in town loaded with Boarshead meats. Not cheap but exceptionally good and filling. They also deliver. I admit to heing a semi regular when I get coupons in my huilding.
I'm creating an agenda for Sunday which includes getting barred at BJ at ElCortez, and a slot race, among other things.Quote: TwoFeathersATLNo one voted for Blackjack?
Are you all banned from all BJ tables?
Scared to have every player at the table ramping up with the count simultaneously?

Your'e right. My teammates and I will do this another day =P.Quote: AxelWolfVery Strange
I'm still in, with 2 others as well. I'd like to play some poker before, if we can get enough for a table at least. The 5pm trickle in and 6pm food ordering time I think sounds perfect. Leaves plenty of evening afterwards for craps/etc, etc.
At the time, we were discussing a main event start time of ~7pm, so with the revised earlier gathering time, the times in the above quote should also be adjusted.Quote: DocI am not sure whether it would be useful or destructive to suggest two different gaming sessions, such as meeting at Binions for poker before dinner (maybe 4:30 or 5:00?), then staying at Main Street Station (or hopping over the California if MSS is too crowded) for craps after they run us out of the 777. Any thoughts on the 2-session concept?
As I said in a later post, I might be willing to play poker again, but since I am such a novice, I think I would have to opt out of a NL game & just join folks later.

Instead of El Cortez, can I make a motion to change the location of the "first to be barred" contest? We're betting on this, right? Hehehee
Quote: PokerGrinderCan we add a fist fight to spring fling? Every thread I read today has people b*tching at each other non stop (can I say b*tching?). Something is in the water I think.
But with unicycles, right? Last guy riding wins?

Probably be better if we make it first guy to actually figure out how to get on the unicycle and stay upright wins.
In several of the books I've read by prominent authors they talked about jokingly having these contests with friends for fun and then somehow NOT actually getting kicked out when spreading $10-$500 at TC +2. I "think" the Wiz even had this bet happen once and they ended up calling it a draw because no one got kicked out? If memory serves me correctly he said it was a while ago downtown where they were betting like $3-$200 or something ridiculous lol.Quote: RSInstead of El Cortez, can I make a motion to change the location of the "first to be barred" contest? it's not a good feeling getting kicked out of a casino. I definitely wouldn't do it for sh*ts and giggles.Quote: RomesIn several of the books I've read by prominent authors they talked about jokingly having these contests with friends for fun and then somehow NOT actually getting kicked out when spreading $10-$500 at TC +2. I just haven't done that yet. I hope to be able to get that underway this evening.

I agree. Furthermore, the whole idea of pushing it to the limit to cause a backoff is mocking the casino. It shows no respect to induce the casino to action. I would rather there be a contest to see how obnoxious and profanity laced a WoV member can be before being asked to leave than mocking the casino by aggressive advantage play.
You want to see if you can get backed off for fun? You're helping push the trend toward 6:5. When it's all 6:5 then see how much fun you're having.
That thread is here: https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/las-vegas-attractions/other/25309-2016-spring-fling-sunday-agenda/
Back to the subject:
I'll be arriving Saturday morning, and leaving Tuesday night.
I hope everything is okay Babs. I was looking forward to meeting you and everyone else this trip, but alas, priorities are priorities and I hope everything is okay!Quote: beachbumbabsI was coming out today, but something has come up (that I'm not willing to discuss here), and I'm having to postpone my LV trip for this year. FWIW, my bet on PG Nuggets is still in effect, but the rest of my plans are kaput. Sorry to miss all of you.
Yeah but for some reason I still laughed when reading this... It's kind of "celebrating" the cat and mouse game. We NEVER cross the line and admit anything, but it's fun to think about just dropping the damn act and having fun with it. Min, min, min, TABLE MAX... Well, ya caught me. Have a good night cya later. Plus, the thing that gets me the most to want to try this is how many people I've heard TRIED this and DIDN'T get backed off. If I can min, min, table max at a place for a couple hours that would be quite +EV.Quote: WizardofnothingNot to mention in reality it's easy to force a back off - count - bet min. When count gets high say out loud awesome count is high and spread three hands at table max
You and I were typing at the same time, so I missed your post.
Sorry you won't be there. Hope everything is ok.
Quote: WizardofnothingDid anyone post a full list of activities anywhere and is it set in stone? I have 300 in express comps leftover if we wanted to put them towards dinner at any mlife place/ also if anyone still will be in town I have an extra ufc ticket for the fight
Careful, last time someone offered Express Life comps for a WovCon there were accusations of all kind thrown about :p

Accusations of what? Being generous lol?
Hope all is well w/BBBs. Actually hope it's a hot date (whisked off to the islands or sumptin) that could not be refused !Quote: beachbumbabsI was coming out today, but something has come up (that I'm not willing to discuss here), and I'm having to postpone my LV trip for this year. Medical issue. Flying is contraindicated at the moment and for a couple weeks while I straighten my chemistry out. The joy of being a middle-aged woman, though it beats the alternative. :) Thanks for all the well wishes.

Pretty much. I would dig up the thread if I had more time. Basically someone (I don't remember who, clearly a high roller) had maxed out their Express Comps (at $10K I think?) and never used them because they got everything they needed from discretionary comps. They offered to apply them to one of the group meals. The organizer of that year's WovCon assumed that no one would ever be that generous and figured it was a scam or something.
Notably, the accusation was never proved correct/incorrect. I don't believe the offering person ended up attending anyway.
The organizer was more upset that the venue they wanted would change.Quote: AcesAndEightsPretty much. I would dig up the thread if I had more time. TBH I wouldn't change the venue in hopes someone will follow through, everyone will just be disappointed. I'm sure everyone can afford a meal without a problem. Also you never know someone just might have comps or something anyways.

Oh ok weird, all good I think we can all afford a meal on our own :)
